Players have to played for a team 10 years or a set amount of games for their team to qualify for the veterans list. So unless AFL has changed the veterans rule for Gold Cost and Greater Western Sydney it will be quite some time before they have players eligible for the veterans list.

The eligibility rule does change in 2012, dropping the 30yo age limit. There has never been a "set amount of games" eligibility criteria. Players will only have to have done 10 years service to qualify. It's the quid-pro-quo for the introduction of Free Agency. After 10 years the players become free agents, but the clubs can make them veterans and only have to include 50% of their salary under the cap - thereby allowing them to make better offers.

This rule change has been announced, but does not yet appear in the version of the AFL player rules (as of September 2010). The September 2010 version doesn't mention any exemptions for GC or GWS. I doubt that any of the players they stole from the legacy clubs will ever be eligible for veteran listing, as none of them will be around in 10 years time. That's definitely true for GC - if GWS are able to grab the likes of Scully & Palmer (as is the current speculation) then these kids may well achieve veteran status with GWS.

When Port came in, they had a concession which was that if a player was over 30 and had been with the club since inception then they would qualify for veterans listing. I assume that GC and GWS will get a similar concession.

All sounds good, but just out of interest, what the hell else would you expect Tippett to say?

Did you hear the discussion on 5AA??

Probably not.

Tippett could have easily avoided giving any opinion the way the conversation went. There was a lot of general discussion about Tex and what Cornesy and Rowey wanted Tippett to do to make sure that he stays, at the end of which he virtually volunteered his opinion that Walker will stay.

But then again I'm not one of those people who can only hear that everything is fkd, nobody can do anything right, and there's no hope for anything good happening, irrespective of what is said!!

No, you are one of those people who can only hear that everything is right, nobody can do anything wrong, there's only hope for good happening, irrespective of what is said.

Ok this is getting ridiculous.

Its stupid for posters to jump around like the sky is falling down every time Walker has a roadbump. Not everything will mean that hes leaving.

At the same time, its equally ****ing stupid for people to run around acting like every positive story means for a fact hes staying, and to start attempting to gloat.

I would be shocked if any player signs a new contract before the middway mark this season, apart from those on the fringe of being delisted at seasons end.
The simple reason people forget here is the AFL TV rigts deal. Once this is finalised the AFL will change salary caps from next year and the AFPA are asking for a fair chunk of the possible $1 billion package.
The clubs don't know how much the salary cap will rise by for season 2012 and neither do any player agents. Put it this way, Tex's manager has a contract put in front of him now but knowing there could be a extra $1m - $2m that he could get a large slice out of. Why on earth would he sign now?

As far as I'm concerned, assuming Tex gets his fair 22 games this year and doesn't get demoted to SANFL for no reason, he will stay.

Have to agree with you. Everything we hear is likely to be fluff, and the real story will occur behind the scenes where none of us will have any access to it.

This jumping at shadows was tiresome with the Tippett saga, it's going to be even more tiresome with the Walker saga.

Those weren't shadows.

We had to throw a huge pile of money at him and didn't get his signature until after our best and fairest.

The club had to do an unbelievable amount of work and scrap their preferred payscale to keep him.

We wouldn't have had to go to these lengths if there was only a minimal, shadowy chance that he was leaving.

Of course it was shadows. Did we have reason to fear we'd lose him? Yes, we did. But people were talking on here as though it was a foregone conclusion. Every time anything happened at the club, it meant Tippett was leaving. We lost a match? Tippett's leaving. He missed a shot on goal? He's leaving. We had people on here claiming to know his family saying he was leaving. It wasn't just this forum - media identities stated, as if it were fact, that Tippett had already signed with GC17. Radio rumour mongers were ringing up saying they'd heard from his mother/friend/whatever that he was leaving. Every time Tippett came out and said he wanted to focus on his footy with the Crows, it was a cover and he was leaving. When Reidy said Tippett was going to stay, he was leaving. When even Tippett himself said he was staying, it somehow meant he was leaving.

It was bad enough when we only had money and the prospect of a homecoming to scare us. Now we've got fictitious rumours of dissension, and this farcical idea that he's been mistreated to fuel the flames. I can't say I'm looking forward to it.

We had to throw a huge pile of money at him (Tippett) and didn't get his signature until after our best and fairest.

You say that as if it took us a long time to sign him and only got it done at the last minute. The reality is we signed him a full 12 months before his contract expired and a full 12 months before the Gold Coast even joined. That's got to be the earliest we've signed anyone for a long time, if ever.

Seems to me like it wasn't the struggle you are painting it to be.

The club had to do an unbelievable amount of work and scrap their preferred payscale to keep him.

Do you really know that for sure or are you just making assumptions?

The words of one of his teammates and best friends..

Hearsay is a kind of evidence...

Did you hear that, Crow-mo and Wood Duck? Stop using your "fevered imaginations." Hearsay and the words of a close friend are evidence enough. Just stop it, please.

GARY Ablett will sign with Geelong, putting club loyalty ahead of a huge offer from the Gold Coast, according to his former manager.
Michael Baker, who orchestrated Ablett's last deal in 2005, is certain personal reasons will sway the champion onballer to stay with the Cats.
Baker's close connection with the Ablett family spans almost two decades......

If Vader was your lawyer in the case of "Walker is going to go to GWS" I'm pretty sure the case would get called off after both sides failed to provide any evidence at all :o

My cross examination of Trigg would go for days. ;)
