Interesting observation.

The complete invisibility of Fagan and Chapman is an indictment on their supposed leadership of the club - they are conspicuously absent...

It’s hard to believe anyone in that position would be so arrogant or gutless as not to front up...

Maybe there is something going on in the background?
Or they don’t want to artificially inflate the situation by getting involved ? Works against the narrative of trying to talk it down.

Is there a chance the camp stuff involves IP your club isn't allowed to share publicly or it'll be sued?

Only reason I can think of for them saying what they said, how they said it.
Thats been raised before and its possible. But why not say that? ' Unfortunately due to contractual agreements some of the activities cant be confirmed or denied'

Looking at Fages and Nigel Smarts twitters

Fages didn't "like" anything from between the Hawks game until Lynch signed, bar a tweet about some rugby reunion. Didn't "like" our announcement about CM. Didn't "like" Burton and Pike's performance. Nada.

Smart off in Singapore playing video games.

No support for Pike and Burton whatsoever.
Was he on holidays somewhere?

Okay, I purposely avoided everything in the off week and spent the better part of the weekend lugging a golf bag around courses. Only question I have is:

Are we planning on showing up for the rest of the season or did the team quit for the year?

Well it doesn't look good, But the Pyke and the club have come out saying we will go hard, but then the media say all we do is lie. So I think it's going to be a good draft.

So the game is abuse the afc at every opportunity Did they mention anything about drunken port players getting into abit of trouble in Shanghai?
I suspect the answer is yes, abuse AFC at every chance.

The AFC in implementing its media policy has started a war, particularly with Croc. Freezing out some journalists and going it alone with their own media production.

The tactics used are pretty similar to media war on Trump. Almost every day there is yet another hysterical outburst about something Trump has done, with closer examination showing it's often false, or it was existing policy under Obama - and when there's nothing to report they go back to Russia. CM is AFC's Russia, stable source of hysteria.

So if you are going to branch out and do self media, you better be good at controlling your message. We have not done that at all, and in fact we've made matters worse by changing the message CM 2/3 times, which gives the smell of blood to Croc.

The presser on Sat was diabolical - and they had almost a week to prepare for it. It was like seeing 2 naughty kids being sent to the Principal.

They seem caught between ignoring the media and being a vault, and engaging to put out fires. Needs to be one or the other.

Much like Trump though, yes there's a lot of smoke but that's because there's an inferno blazing behind closed doors.

Rucci gets a thing or two right occasionally, and he said that Burton had no sense of the occasion (which is no surprise, that’s exactly how he was as a player). No sense that the club’s credibility was sinking before his very eyes, where as Pyke could see there had to be at least some honest detail given to restore the credibility of the club and at least justify the club calling the press conference.

I posted yesterday about what my alternative to that presser would have been. That style of media conference, in those circumstances, was simultaneously a) beneath Don Pyke and b)far out of Burton’s depth.

And whoever came up with the idea should be ******* ashamed of themselves that they couldn’t foresee that.

The Crows expanding media department seems to be ruffling a few feathers.

Can someone explain to me why we have gone this direction? What are the advantages?

Just following on....

Making the choice to self media and then sending Birdbrain out in one of the most important pressers of the season is bizarre.

Like a true amateur he set and walked into his own trap. Makes light of the camp, says the club laughs at how overblown it's been. Then when asked about what happened he clams up. If nothing like what has been reported happened, why can't you tell us?

Jesus - the look on his face. Hmmm, I've been done here, how do I get out.

FFS it's not hard - work out the message, then control it with talking points. Stick to the talking points!

Adelaide, Norwood,
Smells a lot like making Burton clean his own dirty washing if you ask me.
I agree.

This is a litmus test of sorts for Burton I reckon. Good leaders shine under pressure.

Burton doesn't quite have what it takes to wear the big boy pants.

I also think, that this is a Football Department issue, and this is why Burton and Pyke were rolled out. A "It's your problem, you fix it, before we fix it for you!" type of setup.

Time will tell and the real test for Chappy and Fages is at season's end and the moves that are made within the footy department (if any).

Gary Lyon nailed what should've been said straight away at the PC (paraphrasing a bit):

'We have parted ways with CM. They helped us for a while and some players got benefits out of it, but it hasn't worked recently, we acknowledge that some mistakes were made. These mistakes have been cleared up with the players, so it's time to move on and attack the 2nd half of the season.'

If that was said off the cuff, I would be more than happy, instead of half defending it still and giving wishy washy answers.
Exactly. When will the AFC learn to front up with a human, happy to communicate face that gives considered but direct information that most people can understand and accept, as distinct from the entrenched secretive, spin modified, half baked compromised way it has grown to presents itself. Some straightforward honesty and reasonable openness would raise the credibility of our current management and the club generally. I struggle with trying to understand what the AFC has become

Brett Burton couldn't be trusted to control the surge of adrenaline and kick a goal after taking a mark in the square, let alone be able to deliver a controlled message to the media which currently has us under siege.

I can only hope that Slippery Pete was on to something when he said Fagan is trying to show him up for the bumbling fool that he is. Surely if he wanted to break contract and can him, all he'd have to do is play a recording of that press conference to the board.

I think the massive backlash from the media tonight would tend to suggest that the press conference wasnt too successful. You would have to have your head a fair way up your own arse to believe this whole incident is a media beat up.

There is no way Burton can keep his job.
It was noticeable to me that Pyke and Burton were not a united front. Pyke et himself aside from the purpose of the presser in the first minutes. He also purposely lingered at the conclusion by checking and engaging with the journos while Burton scurried for the door.

Burton is the problem (fail), not so much the whole Camp preseason CM schemozzle.c

Upshot from media last night:

On the Couch: Lyon pretty much sums up what should have happened.
Talking Footy: McClure showed himself to be a flog with a vendetta, the rest of them were pretty right, pointed finger at Burton.
Footy Classified: Inexplicably went hard at Pyke, although Caro and then Lloyd got it back to Burton and highlighted due diligence done by the Lions.

All of them said it was poorly handled by the club - correct
The two tabloid shows got facts wrong
The two tabloid shows contained Croc employees (Hutchy and McClure) who went very hard at the club, hosed down to some degree by their co panellists.

You can see why the Club wants to control a lot of it's own media. BUT as I think Pete said earlier, if you're going to do that, you have to be honest and transparent. Hopefully the club takes some "learnings" from all this and engages a media consultant to really tighten all this up.
