I'm not sure why we felt he was a chance to go somewhere else
That’s the thing and why I don’t buy it we got him on a cheap deal. The only reason you give 3 when you don’t want to is you have to. You have to because you think you’ll lose him otherwise, so that means you also need to pay him.

Now if you had spent minimal resources on developing a ruck that we were confident was ready to go, you’d let ROB walk, get a pick and have McAndrew as your back up.

This is going to be a fascinating thread this year.

Do you think he had other offers?

Wouldn’t have thought so, the club must have otherwise why give 3? ROB wasn’t going to retire

I'm guessing there was a real risk we could have been looking at going into the post season with no ROB, no S Draper and no prospects of luring anyone else.

Agree .....doesn't it also depend on the $size of the Contract ?

Yep, because we’ve neglected our ruck stocks, apparently it was going to be easy to bring in ruck, instead we’ve got a 2 gamer leading it and 3 year newly signed ROB in SANFL.

We couldn’t call ROBs bluff because we were desperate due to our own stupidity.

No, it also comes down to lists spots, of which we’ve been very tight on. Second it’s the role. When you have 2 rucks, one has to be very good, we’ve got neither and after signing him ROB for 3 years, we are preferring a 2 gamer.

It’s an absolute shit show.

As for the income, again, if we had to give him 3 years to keep him, he won’t have accepted peanuts. That’s illogical.

Wow, Kelly really is up with it, we didn’t know Ruck rule changes were coming? It was only talked about prior to us signing him.

****wits.
Days of media training and weeks to prepare a response and the best he can up with is "The most publicised rule change last year caught us completely off guard?"

I didnt get to watch the game, how did McAndrew go?

Does he have the tank?
He was just ok.
I think his biggest asset will be his height but he came up against someone even taller than him.

Darcy Cameron has had the better of opposing rucks so far with the new rules so it will be very interesting to see how McAndrew matches up against him 1st up

Did he lose his place in a speech he’d practiced over and over. What the hell was he trying to say in that last half.

There is a fair bit of mayo on that, which is not like you to be dramatic preseason about our Ruck stocks (remember last years storm in a tea cup and how that turned out?).

You act like the club didn't want ROB at all. He was playing well last year - finished top 10 in our B&F (and this wasn't a middling side - it was a team that won 18 bloody games). We wanted ROB. We also wanted that 2 gamer. We brought him in a year ago - and liked him so much that we gave him a 2 year extension. This isn't some green 20 year old prospect either - he has been in the 'system' for 7 years - including on an AFL list for 5 years.

And whats this bluff? I could understand that argument if he signed in September after the trade period and we had no options. But if he is on as much as you suggest - you don't think we could force the hand of another ruckman to pay em that much to demand out?

You keep bleating on about ROB's age. There are 7 ruckman older than him starting than him this year. 95% of his contract finishes before he turns 33. Thats not a negative factor.

Once again it's a massive over-reaction. I would have preferred to give ROB 2 years which takes him to the end of 2027 (when him and McAndrew are both out of contract), but that third year isnt the end of the world.

And yet the club has come out and whinged that they weren’t aware of the ruck rules when they re-signed him to 3.

If you’re not concerned about our ruck position that’s your choice. Me, I’m concerned that a ruck that was destined for Norwood with 2 games experience is leading our ruck and the bloke we’ve just signed on for 3 years, has spent the preseason struggling under the new ruck rules and is now playing SANFL. Know of another back up ruck on a 3 year deal paid decent money?

If McAndrew doesn’t come on, what’s our options, play the bloke we re-signed and then dropped?

But it’s hard to take your position on this seriously when you consider using 2 rookie picks 10 years ago as a waste, too much to spend on a ruck. We will never agree.

And you bring up my view of ROB leading into 2025 as being wrong, well considering he sucked for 23/24 I had a fair bit of reason to be concerned. He did have a good season, right until the latter stages of the season when he reverted to sucking again.

Well let's be honest - we knew there would be changes - but we didn't know what those changes would exactly be. The AFL is an absolute basket case when it comes to rule changes.

To be honest - we still dont know the impact of these rules. There have already been loopholes opened and closed, ruckman criticizing it and players being injured.

There is every chance the rule gets changed back - When Swann was asked about knee injuries - here is what he said.
“I think you’d be naive to say it’s not going to happen — it’ll happen,” he acknowledged.

“If there was a pandemic of them, you might change it back … it’s going to happen.

I think this whole destined for Norwood thing is a bit tough of on McAndrew. Ruckman ain't very valuable with regards to trade currency.

Know of another back up ruck on a 3 year deal paid decent money?

I like how you ask these questions. I can do it too.

Can you name any teams who won 18 games last year and have such amazing ruck depth that a 26 year old ruckman performed so well he pushed the clubs 10th best player (according to their B&F) to the 2's to start the season?!?!?

If McAndrew doesn’t come on, what’s our options, play the bloke we re-signed and then dropped?

Yup. If McAndrew doesn't come on - we play ROB. If ROB is shit - we can give Toby Murray a go. If that all fails, we can try Maley. We can bring in Boyd from the SANFL at the halfway mark.

But it’s hard to take your position on this seriously when you consider using 2 rookie picks 10 years ago as a waste, too much to spend on a ruck. We will never agree.

I think the time you put in - much better value using a pick on a ruckman who you is more physically developed and you have more data on.

It was wrong. Just because you felt like you had reason for concern doesn't make you any less wrong.
