Crows SANFL Reserve Side

Good question...don't know the answer to that one.

Was there only 9 teams in the SANFL when the Crows came in?? My memory of when that happened is hazy. Something should have been done long ago.

If it is a clause in the ownership you would think all this talk of the AFC looking hard at setting one up in some form would be rubbish.

Yeah it was the year that West Torrens got "Peckered!"

It could've been the perfect opportunity to have a reserves team from the get go but I don't think it was common practice back then so it probably wasn't even on the table. But times change and you either gotta move with them or get left behind.

We need a reserves side so that Craig can see Walker play across half back.

SANFL coaches like Bassett are constantly screwing up our players by playing Walker up forward or Godden playing Petrenko down back. It's not their fault, these coaches just don't know any better.

As soon as we have complete ownership over all of our players there will be no holding our club back.

Spot on and this is why IF we get one we will be apart of the VFL and not SANFL.

Sooner the AFL release Port from the SANFL the better.Then we to will be released and we can start moving forward.

I don't get why it would be part of the VFL and not the SANFL wouldn't we want them to play against the best opposition they can? Whoes going to taken interest or watch a crows reserve side in the VFL? I could understand if there was a full AFL reserve comp with each team having a reserve team.

Unfortunately it may have to come to that before anythng gets done.
People at Port and at the Crows will want to continue contributing to the SANFL to keep it strong but it has to be a give and take situation between all three parties. So far the SANFL's interest has been all about taking.

Not a huge fan of this idea. Players exposure to other environments is probably a good thing, there is a risk of missed opportunity if we have the same people doing the same thing every week.

Can you imagine if NC had walker playing on HB in the crows reserves side in the SANFL? I shudder at the thought.

If NC or any coach wanted to test someone in a different position, the reserves would be the first place to trial it.

ADELAIDE'S bid to place Victorian recruit Brad Crouch at SANFL club Norwood has been blocked by the SANFL.

The Crows snapped up Crouch through the Greater Western Sydney mini-draft in trade week, but the 17-year-old is ineligible to play AFL next year and his development must begin in the local competition.

The research seems that teams who have stand alone sides foster better cohesion and further development in their young players.

WITH four of the past five premierships going to clubs with stand-alone VFL sides - Geelong and Collingwood - Carlton has moved a step closer to that model.

The Victorian teams all at least have affiliations with VFL clubs and are now moving to stand alone reserve sides. Essendon the latest by 2013.

The AFL should have a reserves comp, I think somewhere down the line people will soon start questioning whether Collingwood and Geelong having their own reserves teams has been advantageous to their player development and success.

I think the results a year later are speaking for themselves.

The minidraft is another unknown that new recruits in SA clubs have to prepare for.
After the lottery of the national draft new recruits face the infamous scramble by non performing SANFL cellar dwellars.
This situation is not ideal for the development of these kids as they are split up into different clubs and allegiances, a situation that recruits in Victoria do not have to contend with.
There is a lack of direction with this system that was put in place to benefit the local clubs only.

Unfortunately this system will not change while the licence is held by the SANFL.

personally, the Crows should scrap the thought of a stand alone reserves side in the SANFL and just put it in the almost AFL reserves that exists in the VFL.

I'm not sure the AFL is yet in a position to fund interstate trips for reserve squads. I'd like an AFL reserves system, and that's the logical solution, but the cost associated won't come anywhere near the revenue.

Thanks Carl this is the post i was waiting for . With all due respect we need to put the Crows first and put what is in their best interest in front of the SANFL. Of course we need to respect where we come from and the SANFL. But the Crows are falling behind the rest of the Football community and are placing themselves at a disadvantage by not having a reserve side. Its's undeniable now, it's time for change .

I am just as passionate about the bays winning the premiership as I am for the Crows. Having to play the Crows for premiership points would spell the end of the SANFL comp as a standalone comp.

I would argue that AFL players don't make a whole lot of difference to a SANFL club, unless it is an elite player like Vince or Walker.

Glenelg played the Eagles with Kane Cornes, Salopeck, Sellar, Lyons and Hitchcock and still got smashed by 100. Maybe we are just crap but it can't help team continuity

A genuine AFL reserves comp would be the best way to go IMO, the AFL reserves draw could mirror that of the AFL draw and the reserves sides play as a curtain raiser before each AFL game. The AFC AFL team and the AFC reserves team would all travel together each week where travel is involved)

I would also not be against having an SANFL AFC reserves side, I would still support and barrack for the Legs but take an interest i how the AFC reserves side is going. Those players left out of the AFC AFL 22 are either injured, babies or shite so i cannot see them dominating, the reserves team would also need to be topped up with non listed players to make up the numbers. The SANFL would need to look closely at the setup e.g. Smaller salary caps for non listed afl players for the AFC and PAFC reserves so the rest of the SANFL have the ability to pay players a little more and retain their better players without being poached by the cashed up AFL reserves sides..(thats just one suggestion, I am sure you all can come up with something better.

An AFL Reserves side would be my preference though..instead of Vlad and Co pocketing their massive bonuses for rigging the draw, this extra money could be used to support a reserves comp. TV rights would also jump again, Foxtel pushed for that silly comp they ran this year..

In the end I think it is imperative that we get a reserves side ASAP..

The integrity of the SANFL died years ago. This argument doesn't hold any weight anymore. If it came down to having a Crows reserves side or not - my first preference would be as an independent competition against Collingwood, Carlton and co but I wouldn't lose any sleep if it was in the SANFL either.

It is still a brilliant competition. Crowds are great every week and the passion in the stands is still at a excellant level.

With a debt of $27 mil and forced to dispose of a valuable asset to fix their financial problems the SANFL are looking more like a "Greek" tragedy than a long term viable competition.
