It will be very very interesting to see which three get dropped. You'd have to think Vince will be out...the other two will be tough because Porpy, Douglas and Knights all give you a lot. What do you think the chances are of Bode or Welsh being dropped?

Interchange may be:

Douglas - Shirley - Griffin - Knights

I have a feeling Bode may be left out....

Yeah ive got the same feeling. i love bodey, but i do get the feeling he may be seen as expendable. Altho with Bodey out i would have Porplyzia in there for his tenacity and goal scoring ability, however i think Douglas and Porplyzia have the runs on the board over the preseason.

Personally, if fit, i dont think Welsh can be dropped. Bodey on the other hand...

Hope im wrong tho.

I'll go with
Int (from): Jonathon Griffin, Robert Shirley, Richard Douglas, Jason Porplyzia

Tough on Knighta but I think the last two spots will be between him, Douggie and Porps

This will be interesting.

As others have said, you'd assume Griffin and Shirley are definitely in, and Vince will probably miss.

Bode would be hard to drop, but IMHO we need Porps, Knights and Douglas all playing.

Edit - I think NikkiNoo might be right. But then again its hard to see Craig leaving out Bode. Geez...

Disagree CM - Bode has been exceptionally disapointing this pre-season and the other three are definitely ahead of him. He was unders instructions last year from the coaching staff that he had to produce each and every game (kick goals) otherwise he would be dropped and possibly delisted at the end of the year. I think he needs that ultimatum again but I seriously can not see him ahead of those other three that I named from what I have seen of the pre-season.

IMHO,

INT: Griffin, Shirley, Bode and Porplyzia.

Douglas and Knights very unlucky. If Bode does miss out then I think Douglas will come in because you would suspect that Porplyzia will be able to replace Bode in the forward line and Douglas gives us an extra midfielder.

I still have a feeling that Vince, Douglas and Knights will miss out.

Thats all very well but the only one i can see playing a similar role to Bode is Porplyzia. And if we where going solely on Preseason form Perrie would be playing for North Adelaide reserves. Admitedly he has been injured tho.

:thumbsu: that's where my money would be as well

Would be highly surprised if Vince got anywhere near it ....IMO he's still short of match time

Essendon have placed a great emphasis on pace this season with their recruiting .....Douglas will be needed IMO for midfield matchups and he's demonstrated he can do it .....whether he can do it consistently each game I highly doubt it this season. But early in the season young kids are full of fire and enthusiasm ....pick him.!

Bode OK in a pocket but Porps can do the job, has better marking power and is a better midfield option than Bode.
IMO Bode hasn't the pace for the quickness of most midfield needs and is not nearly dangerouse enough with his disposals thru the midfield.

Better midfield rotation requirements will have Douglas and Porplyzia over Bode with Knights and Vince to miss out.

I can see the logic, but I don't subscribe to the primacy of pre-season form as a selection variable.

that can only be valid if the pre-season approach mirrors that of the regular season; which we all know it doesn't. given the experimentation that takes place in the pre-season, that limits its' application as a fair measure to take into the season proper.

you might well be right, but at this stage I can't place that much faith in the PS form. not long to go though :)

Yes Im going along those lines also.

Well despite who doesnt make the cut...three cheers for Griffo in making his debut:thumbsu:

Id play Griff, Shirls, Bode and Porps.

i wouldnt have thought porps would miss out and i doubt they wont pick dougie after his pre season form. Im along the lines of

Griff, Shirly, Porps, Douglas.

Im also very happy that Mattners on the wing. I would have though macca and doughty would be the other way round???

Interesting that van Berlo is listed as a starting 18 player, whereas Shirls is on the extended bench.
These things are generally meaningless, but can we read anything into that?
Last year VB was always listed as a bench player, and Shirley was always listed as starting on the field, from memory.

It's an interesting dilemma that the selectors face - too many mid-fielders and small forwards while tall players are scarcer than rocking horse manure

The 25 that are named were and are absolutely predictable given those not available.

If we go by pre-season form Vince won't be there - back to 24.

So it's 2 out of Bode, Porplyzia , Douglas and Knights to miss.

Bode's pre-season form has been by far the worst so while the selectors may not agree with me he would miss if I was the sole selector. As Nikki said, he's been told that he must be more consistent to get picked every week, and for my money he hasn't.

Douglas and Knights have done everything right and deserve to be selected. Again the selectors may not agree with me, but Porps has had an interrupted pre-season and IMO needs a run or two in the SANFL to find maximum fitness and form.

So for mine the outs would be Vince, Bode and Porplyzia if the team is picked on form.

But pre-season form is very misleading. Those youngsters have been getting much more game time than some of the 2nd tier players and as such they will have bigger impacts on games and hence better form.

I think people are reading WAY too much into players form in piss weak, meaningless practice games where we were playing 28 players.

When its all said and done, selectors will pick players that

a) have had a good pre-season (rather than pre-season match form)
b) fill a need
c) have proven that they can get the job done

Just because Knights ran rampant in the PS games doesn't mean he is ready for the real stuff where the pace of the game and ferocity of contest lifts up a couple of notches at least. Not that I am saying he is not ready but just using him as an example.

These proven veterans (to use yank term) pace themselves through the PS games. They just go out for a bit of a hitout, to shake the rust off and the #1 priority is not to get injured. Form is not really much of a consideration at this stage.

Porps only missed 2 games with a sore knee. Came back to play in our last game against freo and played last week with the Westies in Tassie. I am pretty sure the selectors would see him as a player that has cemented a spot in the 22 or at the very least is on the brink of doing so. He will get the nod over Knight and Douglas IMHO and rightly so.

If PS form was be all and end all then Perrie wouldn't even get a sniff, let alone be named in the side. Yeah I know we are short on talls be there are other ways to play than having a 2 tall forward line.
