in 2000. geez move on dude.

7 years on, and you've not noticed he ranked higher than over 30 other players on list in the B&F last season. yes, that matters. ;)

check out what he did last season, and then tell us whether he needs to get any better?

Well look what we passed up for him,

12 Shaun Burgoyne Port Adelaide Magpies Port Adelaide

18 Daniel Kerr East Fremantle Football Club West Coast Eagles

We could have picked up either of these players instead of trading him.

Facts are facts irrespective of when it was.

If you are playing more than other players then of course you will poll more votes int he B&F, so I dont see the point there. There would be something wrong if Bode plays more games during the year and doesnt poll higher than players that have played less games in the best and fairest. If we went by that philosphy we wouldnt bring anyone new into the side.

As I said before Bode is only a battler and not a superstar that was my whole point and he wont get any better than what he is now. Your opinion is that he doesnt need to improve (which you are entitled to), but the facts are that he wasnt selected this week so maybe he isnt the certain starting 22 player that you are claiming him to be.

7 years and still a fringe player speaks for itself, as you can see by the selections for this week. Which is the point I am making, we traded away a high pick, which IMO he has not rewarded us for. Again that is my opinion, just like your opinion is that he should be a regular selection each week.

I for one am happy that Douglas and Knights are getting more gametime because they are going to be guys in the couple of years that may form part of our engine room.

Porplyzia, Bode and Vince out

Stunned that Porps is not in

I think its a pretty good move. Porps suffered due to an interrupted preseason but he will be back. They have rewarded preseason form with one eye to the future.

Not to be a told you so, but I suggested Bode out for Knights and Douglas a few weeks back but didnt have too many backers.

Would loved to have had porps played but im still pretty happy with this result. I wonder if they would have played shirly if it wasnt his 100th game cos theres no real player we NEED him to tag.

Robert Shirley is a LOT more than a tagger. He led the team in hard ball gets last year. Hardly a statistic taggers rate well in.

Shirley has played in how many consecutive games again? And all of a sudden he would be dropped because there is no one to tag

Yes, i think porps is a much better attacking player. Thats my opinion and im not a shirley hater.

get over it FFS. and cut out this crap about we could have had xyz.
it's a draft not an exact science.

yes, I am sure I am not the only one surprised that one the best defensive HFF in the league last year is not in the side. will be interested to see how that plays out. particularly seeing as the only comparable player seems to have been omitted too.

whoa, don't even pretend this week means your 'view' that he is fringe player bears out. lets see how this plays.

true, but a dull old chestnut from 7 years ago has SFA relevance to today.

absolutely agree :thumbsu:

Bring on the kids.:thumbsu: I just wish we had some young talls ready to go so they could put some pressure on the inconcistent McGregor, Perrie, Bock.

Porplyzia, Bode and Vince out

A pleasant surprise, great that Douglas and Knights are both in and I hope they grab this opportunity. I thought we would have gone with experience and kept both Porplyzia and Bode in. Wish I could go on Sunday, will be exciting to see these young blokes run around.

I can't see how you can call Bock inconsistent ....

Apart from injury he has been one of the stand outs since Craig took over

Very happy that Knights and Douglas have made it for Rnd 1, but be shocked that Porps is on the outer.

Who would he replace though?? Knights or Douglas at best...

would have thought that one of Porps or Bode would have played......

That leaves the side with no natural crumber
This is why I think that Andrew McLeod will be played in the forward line this game. Thats if Bode or Needles don't get a call up on sunday.

Its the only solution to the problem that I can see. In this case Johncock, Torney and Mattner will be relied upon to create some run from defence. Along with Stevens.

Mattner will be played at HB, so will Torney with Bassett and Johncock in BPs. The only other place you can see for McLeod is in the forward line because I don't think he will get much of a run in the midfield.

McLeod and Burton are two players that have the X-factor and are proven match winners. They can kick the freakish goals and be that spark to the side thats needed at times.

Agree with all of that.....:thumbsu:

I became slightly aroused when they named Mattner on the wing instead of HB....but as you say the reality is he will play at HB.

Did someone say X-Factor? >_>

it's a draft not an exact science.

Yeah I know it isnt an exact science and thats the whole point. We made a judgement that Bode was better than any player that was going to be available after pick 13 and IMO it was wrong.

this makes no sense at all. :

Of course it does, you are talking about the fact that he might have xxx amount of votes in the b&f so he should play, my point is that he will obviously have more votes than some of our younger players because he played more games last year than they did.

yes, I am sure I am not the only one surprised that one the best defensive HFF in the league last year is not in the side. will be interested to see how that plays out. particularly seeing as the only comparable player seems to have been omitted too. :

A defensive forward? isnt that an oxymoron ? Shouldnt we be focussing on a forwards offensive capabilities rather than the fact that he lays more tackles than other half forwards ?

I do understand what you are saying, but I just find it interesting that we are talking about his defensive skills in an offensive role and using that as justification for his selection.

whoa, don't even pretend this week means your 'view' that he is fringe player bears out. lets see how this plays.:

But you were implying that he should be a certainty each week to play. You have your view and I have mine on that.

Bode had a good year last year, but his form in the preason was average at best and in 2004 and 2005 only played 11 matches combined for the whole two seasons. That is why I do feel (again my opinion) is that he is a fringe player.

true, but a dull old chestnut from 7 years ago has SFA relevance to today.:

If he remains on the list then it is still relevant again your opinion vs mine. Lets not bring this into a my opinion means more than yours senario.

I am not saying that Bode is useless, just that IMO I think that his space may be more suited in certain instances to use to bring one of our younger players through.

It's an interesting dilemma that the selectors face - too many mid-fielders and small forwards while tall players are scarcer than rocking horse manure

The 25 that are named were and are absolutely predictable given those not available.

If we go by pre-season form Vince won't be there - back to 24.

So it's 2 out of Bode, Porplyzia , Douglas and Knights to miss.

Bode's pre-season form has been by far the worst so while the selectors may not agree with me he would miss if I was the sole selector. As Nikki said, he's been told that he must be more consistent to get picked every week, and for my money he hasn't.

Douglas and Knights have done everything right and deserve to be selected. Again the selectors may not agree with me, but Porps has had an interrupted pre-season and IMO needs a run or two in the SANFL to find maximum fitness and form.

So for mine the outs would be Vince, Bode and Porplyzia if the team is picked on form.

IMO congrats to the selectors for picking form players for competing positions, and have got it exactly right for all the reasons above.

Vince and Bode's form didn't warrant selection, while Porps will be back soon once he regains maximum fitness from an injury setback - but not this week.

Expect Knights to play mainly on a wing with odd runs on the ball as he has been doing all pre-season. Douglas is likely to be rotated through both the forward line and on-ball.

Well done to Knights and Douglas for forcing the selectors to pick them with the weight of form.
