At some level I question whether the club has to some degree bowed to long term negative reporting and feedback from the media and supporters over the bleeding of talent that has been highlighted since Bock, Davis and later Gunston walked.

Don't think so.

I wonder if the Neil Craig/Tyson Edwards shitshow is affecting our ability to drop past-it players though, especially when you consider we've still basically got the same assistants hanging around like an abandoned 1960's government building riddled with asbestos.

Maybe. Or maybe the fumbliness just worsened?
eg. Have never seen Milera fumbled so much ever!

If we can get better at being composed and efficient, we can still give it a shake.
Young players tend to mirror the state of composure of the senior players they look up to.

Like a herd of wildebeest. When the old experienced ones freak out panic runs through the herd like diarrhea.

Unfortunately our senior players in the likes of Jacobs, Jenkins, McKay, Douglas aren't what you would call examples of calm and composure under pressure. They tend to panic.

Even Tex. We all love him but we've all seen him get that look like a cat in a bath tub.

Hawks were very lucky in that regard over the years. Senior players like ice keeping the group calm. Or maybe it wasn't luck. Maybe composure was an attribute they valued in recruits.

There is no doubt this is the case. This is largely why senior players get an extra year out of us in contact negs. The club seems to think fans will pelt them with apricot slice if they let a senior favourite walk out the door.

Then we end up with overcontracted old spuds past their usefulness but feel obliged to keep playing them to the end of their contracts.

Ahhh but we are in a premiership window NOW (or were) so we really needed to turn those draft picks into players who could come in and have an impact NOW not in 2-3 years time when our premiership window has closed. To be honest I was one of those that said trade them out as they are assholes but you know what, football clubs and premiership teams are full of assholes.

We should have gone on a massive trading IN spree the last two trade years but as always we lost much, much more than we gained.

Oh I forgot there is a "window" and a recipe for premierships, how silly of me.

There is no set time frame a team is in a "premiership window"
There is no set time frame it takes a team to build into a genuine contender
There is no set time frame a team needs to take to "rebuild" from bottom 8 to top 4

The best chefs create their own recipes, not copy others.

We don't really do that either. Look what Clarkson has done in 4 years. This is what you mean yeah? Hawks will win another 2 flags at least before we will win one. He shipped off his 2x Premiership winning Captains, nearly 3 and a vice captain because he saw the writing on the wall as soon as it was there. Meanwhile we honor long term contracts and play cooked veterans in front of youth due only to good bloke/servant of the club factor and because "there is no one else ready or good enough" bullshiz.

I agree with this. Adelaide should have shipped off VB, reilly, dogga and co much earlier than they did. Their replacements would be having an impact now. We should have shipped off MacKay 3 years ago, Douglas last year, Jacobs during this year, Otten last year etc. The selection committee is weak.

We dont need a full blown rebuild. Adelaide needs a faster turnover of hasbeens and neverwillbes

The problem is our chef is serving up something that is stale, smells funny and gives us the shits.

Our Chef did OK in 2017, but on their last shift a few of the waiters dropped the meals, took the wrong orders and didnt even show up to work...

I agree that in 2019 food tastes have changed, and the menu needs spicing up.

Time to play the kids.

Fogarty should play every game if he's fit. He's the future.

Keep getting game time into Chase.

Consider succession planning for the elder statesment in decline: betts, jacobs, walker.
As much as I'll rag on the club at times

I'm a big advocate for developing kids in a competitive environment. I believe the club is cautionary in its' axing of fallen veterans, however we do develop players well as a whole.

Succession planning, Fog for Tex seems the like for Like, Himmelberg for Jenkins, Stengle for Betts, and ROB for Sauce with another draftees ruckman needed soon.

Gallucci and Davis need games more than anyone imo and Douglas' injury opens a window for either.

I want this season to be another red hot crack at contending, however we must begin phasing out players like Dmac, Douglas and sauce if we Are hoping to maintain our (generally) above average on field performances in 2020 and beyond.

The more footy I watch this season the more I think we had our chance in 2017 and, along with being screwed by the league, we blew it.

Too many sides have gone well past us, while we’ve stood still. Gone backwards in fact.

Look at the quality out there tonight in the Magpies vs Tigers game. Consider the skills execution, the hardness at the contest, tackling, speed, and the composure under pressure, compared to what we put on show each week. Not to mention the individual brilliance both teams have on offer. We’ve got some quality and will beat up on average opposition, but we’re miles off the best sides.

All the top 6 sides will torch us this year. We are cooked.

Collingwood are a far more honest and accountable side than we are.

We still think our shit doesn't stink because we made a GF in 2017. Just like Sando and his "kick from a GF" in 2012.

Outlook is extremely bleak. This is as dark as I can remember being on the club in 25ish years of being old enough to understand barracking for them.

Has there been a bigger fall from grace in recent memory since that ‘17 prelim belting of Geelong?

We need a rebuild, but will have to endure the club putting off the inevitable thinking we can contend before it starts.

No doubting we have lost more than we have gained from our starting 22 since the GF.

I've always thought we are too easy on out coaches but maybe it's the opposite. Maybe the club says to the head coach at an absolute minimum this year we need to make the finals or your job is at risk. So instead of building a premiership team for the future and taking a few hits now, the coach has to persist with the likes of Mackay, Jenkins, Douglas etc rather than risking an untried 19 year old. Hence for us to not make the 8 we need a Burton/Haas like disaster. So in other words we will never have a Hawthorn/Geelong multi-year premiership window but we will never really bottom out either.

Whatever we have done/are doing it hasn't worked for 20 years. This club needs a complete change in direction and personal starting at the very top (Chapman and co).

Port played 4 new recruits more out of necessity. They’ve lost a fair few of their veterans over the preseason.
Geelong played 4 as well.

Port rolled Melbourne.

Geelong rolled Collingwood.

They trusted their youth and came out hungry and fearless. We always come out with the fear of fcuking up since 17
