Autopsy Crows thrash swan (don’t worry tho, this game won’t define us)

11am, Swans HQ:

Dean Cox has called an emergency meeting of the “leadership group”.

It was determined that Cleary, Sheldrick and Roberts are the problem & must all be given time in the VFL.

What was slip over/fall over count at the end of the game? Saw the Crows do it maybe two or three times over the whole game, but there was a Swans players slipping over every 5 minutes.
Similar to every other other week, so.....are we seriously not wearing the right footwear? I imagine most players are wearing the same thing across all clubs. Yet we fall over twice as much as anyone else. I reckon I saw less Suns and Dockers slipping over in a genuine wet slog.
What's going on? Is it another effort based thing? Just easier to go to ground than keep your feet? If it is a footwear thing why hasn't it been addressed?
What's the deal? I want answers. Why don't the journos ask this question?
I've been harping on about this for a while now. It's just comical. Some keep saying the opposition slip over just as much, but it's obvious if you are actually watching the Swans slip over at a much, much higher rate.

I would guarantee 100% that if someone asked anyone at the Swans, player, coaches, whoever, they would all say, I don't know why we're slipping over more. And that will be the end of it.

It’s also mostly not related to talent. It’s about training and intent.

I’m not sure the training has focused enough on technique. So many carrousel arms…
I don't agree with that. Tackling requires talent. It's a genuine skill, just like kicking, marking etc. As evidenced by the fact the overwhelming majority of our list were not born with that ability and seemingly cannot be taught it.

I said it last year, once the tackling & pressure side of the game became selective things carried by the few, rather than non-negotiables expected of the many, the club was doomed.

You can see just how exhausted he is.
Not only is he trying to be the HC. He couldn't replace himself so he is most likely doing that workload too. Things will come out at the end of the season that will give us more of an idea IMO.

Interestingly, stoppage (which I think is Cox’s former portfolio?) is perhaps the only area we didn’t get completely smashed in last night.

Cox appears to be seriously flawed in the broader structure / tactics side of things.

I couldn’t help feel a bit sorry for him in his presser.

About 5mins in Cox wonders if he's in the wrong (empty) room and then realises we never actually named a leadership group.

100% agree . I wish the club would grows some and come out and say horses wage is in this yrs soft cap and that hindered doing anything this yr .

Agree with you on the tackling is a skill element.

But …. for a fair portion of the game, our pressure wasn’t terrible. Instead, we were panicked. Devoid of structure. Nobody trusted their teammates. All pointing at someone else to do something. No flow. No run. No handball chains. Just panic.

Effort and pressure is within the control of the playing group.

But at the moment, we are ….. a rabble.

Amartey Buller Mills Wicks Leidler Snell all should be coming in

Get rid of Ladhams McLean Adams Lloyd Bice Hamling

I would have hoped that was Dean Cox has called an emergency meeting of all Swans listed players at XYZ Hotel.
Sit down, have a couple of beers, or Cruisers, and map out how they will get out of the mess and wipe the slate clean with everyone.

More likely Cruisers our players will drink. 😏

Watched the lot.

Tough pill to swallow.

Warner is, was and will be a huge mistake. Goes missing and spuds it up with the best of them way too often for the $$$$. Great player now in the wrong team hopelessly overpaid for what we want.

Grundy obviously did all he could. I thought Hayward tried his guts out. Imagine being him, when there actually is some forward entry it is not to advantage and he is outnumbered or when it is "cleared" it is panic shanked forward with move thought and he has to deal with even more outnumbers.

Anyway if Gus is the answer what the hell is the question. But really you can pick on them all.

Woeful. Unswanslike. Soft. Timid.

I reckon the 2005 side would give them a game right now.

The group is cooked. It needs a complete overhaul. Basically been a full season since we played well.

Winning that preliminary last year was a curse.

The whole "culture" is shot. Whatever plan there is, apparently, is a secret even from the players.

Pretty simple to beat us. Get it forward of centre because it won't come out.

Do we actually have a hard bastard on the list? We used to have 18 on the field most of the time. And I dont mean the faux hard guy antics like Macca pulls. Real grit. Real **** you to their face. Can't see it. Not by action, words or deed. Lots of insta posts though. Lots of them.

Of course, with the ball we were horrible. That would maybe explain a 5 or 6 goal loss. Outclassed, execution let us down, etc etc.

A 15 goal loss is always about the loser's defence, or lack thereof. We were just typically poor in this regard. So many players that couldn't tackle, smother, close space, intercept by hand, spoil, etc., because we were too slow, too weak, too unskilled in these areas, or all of the above.

And frankly I'm sick of it.

Amartey is suspended. I'd give Wicks the 2 weeks and bye, avoid rushing/risking him.
Yep too many suspensions that I forgot when he is back.

McLean holds his spot because he can actually score goals.

Wicks not coming back probably would give Lloyd another week

Bring in Hanily for Lloyd actually

Just on Milera’s comments - it was very noticeable in TV after one of the goals, Rowbottom stopped on his way back to the middle to talk to the back 6, and as he ran off, Blakey looked as though he was mouthing off back at him (could only assume it was something along the lines of him focusing on his own job and not making them under so much pressure).

Anyway. Grundys game was great. Works so hard, and having to do too much.

Sheldrick, you’d just love it if he took a second to compose himself before disposing, think he rushes to dispose when he still has time. Can get the ball, and you probably can’t doubt his effort either.

Thought Hamling was decent on Walker, and Melican on Fogarty.

Rachele’s steps on Bice and then Co Warner in the first quarter that led to goals showed the difference between AFL standard players and VFL standard players.

I think we all obviously see the season as over. So they need to transition into getting minutes into the young guys, but they also need to rest some of the younger ones that have had a decent workload so far.

Ins:
Buller, Snell, Dattoli, Hanily, Mills, Leidler

Out:
Bice, Co.Warner, Hayward, Lloyd, Campbell, Hamling

I was nearly going to add in Grundy. He was decent last night, but he looks sore as hell. He needs rest and either this week or the week after the bye would be good as it gives longer recovery.

After the bye that is where you can start funnelling players back and forth due to form etc.
Start organising the Round 23, Sunday, August 17 fixture as farewell games to Rampe and Lloyd.

For me it's...

Out: Hamling Lloyd Bice Corey
In: Buller Mills Leidler Hanily

If we're not playing Adams in midfield, may as well drop him, have Corey as sub.

Hopefully Fox gets up for VFL this week, might have him, Harry, Dattoli, Wicks, Amartey to bring in post-bye.

I'd still be bringing in Snell for Hamling as he played as a defender last night and then bring in Buller for Ladhams

Dattoli isn’t ready yet. He showed promise in his first couple of games of VFL (on limited time) but it wouldn’t be fair to him to throw him into the big time with such little preparation.

Give him a few games in VFL first, let him work his way into it. Throwing him could be a detriment to him, particularly in this current side.
