ADELAIDE veteran Ronnie Burns has enjoyed his Christmas break a little too much – struggling while teammates excelled during yesterday's five kilometre time trial at West Lakes.
Ex-Geelong goalsneak Burns entered the Crows' Christmas hiatus in top shape but held up the rear of the time trial led by Brett "Birdman" Burton. Fitness coach Stephen Schwerdt said Burns could look forward to "some extra work" with players aware they had to maintain 5km times recorded on December 23.
"We gave the players an expectation of what they needed to get before they left for their break at Christmas," he said. "With some players it might have been a personal best, to get within 10 or 15 seconds. It was very individualised.
"As far as results go it was pretty good – just about everybody got their goal time. Ronnie unfortunately was one of the exceptions."
Burton headed a rejuvenated Simon Goodwin, James Gallagher and Matthew Bode across the "bus stop" finishing line.
"They go out hard and it drags everyone else through with them," said Schwerdt of the ultra-fit quartet.
"Brett is a stand-out with they way he goes about training – he can run times that are competitive in athletics circles."
Schwerdt was extremely happy with the condition of dual Norm Smith medallist Andrew McLeod who is benefiting from continued sessions devised by Australian Olympic cycling coach Charlie Walsh.
Schwerdt said: "Each year he just gets better and better as far as his conditioning goes."
Veteran Crow Nigel Smart (achilles) is at least one week away from resuming.

Maybe Ronnie had one too many goannas for Christmas
Goody is starring in the pre season though and I just get the impression he’s about to become our early Brownlow favourite.
