Naughton played as a defender 7 years ago for 1 season when we were shit
Came 4th in b & f after missing half a dozen games. Was recruited as a defender because guess what? Our defence was absolutely 5hit back then also. It’s a trait of Bevo teams to be 5hit defensively.

Because the 3 most dangerous forwards on the park were destroying us. Pretty Simple really.
We could have done other things forward. We couldn’t do anything else back
He played defence 7 years ago….he's not the Silver Bullet you all seem to think

Naughton plays where the coach tells him to play. He plays where the team needs him most. I do not give one 5hit what he thinks he is.
Naughton is being played exactly were the coach wants him to play as a Key Forward

I could understand the exhumation of the Naughton to defence corpse if we had a fit and firing JUH and Weightman currently in the side. But we dont. We would absolutely slaughter the Darcy golden goose by expecting him to be the sole target up there right now.

Be like Elsa and Let It Go!!!!

Its stupid.

Ok so darcy is getting molested and no help from the umps, if you swing naughty back, who keeps us in the game?

You tinker with mids. You rest Bont in goal square or English.
You make adjustments when our pants have been pulled down, you don’t keep doing the same stupid thing over and over expecting a different result as Mr Murphy has always taught us. It’s a very arrogant approach believing things will change when it’s obvious they won’t.

Not sure if this has been raised already, but for me the most glaring issue with our defence isn’t just individual personnel in the back six. It’s how easily teams are marking the ball between the arcs when exiting our forward 50. You could see it even against North last week.

This lack of pressure between the arcs is one of the reasons the ball is getting into our defensive 50 so quickly, it’s just too easy for teams to transition. We're not slowing them down at all.

Part of the issue is the midfield not getting into strong enough defensive positions behind the ball, but I also think the backline’s positioning has been off. At times they seem too aggressive and get picked off, and other times they’re sitting five metres off their man and can’t impact the contest in time.

It’s not just a personnel problem, there’s clearly a structural and organisational issue at play as well.
Yep , big issue ,and has been for while now.
Somehow our get out kick went 30 mtrs to the pocket from our kick in’s. From there the Crows forced a kick down the line.
I said to my mate yesterday , the worst thing we can do is kick a point , it nearly always resulted in a crows inside 50 without even a contest.
Having said that their field kicking ( along with kicking at goal ) was elite.

We got to see them go head to head yesterday. It is what it is.

No, you posted Thilthorpe spends half his time in the ruck. I pointed out that your post was BS, but I guess it's also possible you're mathematically challenged. Did my reply with factual statistics have numbers too big for you? Are you on school holidays?

So you could understand where ppl were coming from last year when Beveridge was insistent on playing all of Darcy, Ugle-Hagan and Naughton in the same forward line? And they were always jumping for the same marks every week? Before Lobb was moved back he was also being crammed into the fwd line.

If Naughton kicks goals consistently then not many will have problems with him playing forward. Problem is he's not consistent, and if he's not kicking goals he's useless; no creativity, no flair. He's not like a Tom Hawkins or even a Mihocek who can impact games without scoring.

You need to watch him more closely. He works hard at ground level, and blocking for other forwards. Even when he was struggling for touch earlier in the year, he never dropped his head. Then there's the small issue of preseason glandular fever...

Works hard? That's the bare minimum requirement for any AFL player to get on a list, let alone a game.

All year last year Naughton was launching himself at every marking contest, which often entailed interfering with his own teammates. The difference this year is that he has often gone completely missing, and gets completely shut down by his opponent.

All of the best key-forwards in the last 10 years are multiple levels of magnitude better than Naughton. That is a fact. He is not even half the player Jeremy Cameron, Tom Hawkins or Josh Kennedy are/were, and it all comes down to consistency, creativity and decision making. The irony is Naughton is getting paid more now than all of those players ever did.

Naughts has ranked 1st, 1st and 4th out of all key forwards for average goals assists the last three seasons. Since the start of 2023 he has 52 goal assists to Mihocek’s 18.

I’ve been very complementary of JOD this season but he was absolutely deplorable yesterday.

Yes, kicking to advantage is easier when the midfield is applying little to no defensive pressure but the amount of times he was caught out by a very simple lead was shocking.

Equally when our talls are being dragged so far up the ground so easily, one kick over the top just completely exposes us.

We are kicking into a ridiculously congested F50, relying on a heavily contested mark or moment of magic. Conversely, when the opposition is going forward they’re kicking into an absolute paddock of space.

Partially system, partially personnel. The boys back there need to get a hell of a lot more physical and accountable. But Bevo needs to start adjusting too.

Naughton is ranked 59th for goal assists average this year per footywire. 34th last year. No idea where you're pulling your stats from.
Also assists alone do not measure a player's creativity. Lachlan Fogarty from Carlton finished 4th for average assists last year and he's not even a top 300 player in the competition.

Re-read their message. Lachie Fogarty is not a key forward
