Adelaide football operations manager John Reid has played down media reports that Wayne Carey is facing an extended lay-off with a chronic back-related hamstring complaint.
Television reports on Wednesday suggested that Carey had suffered a setback in his bid to overcome the problem, which has hampered his off-season with the Crows.
Reid conceded Carey's 'hammy' had been an issue for several weeks, but was under control.
“Prior to Christmas, he gave his hamstring a little bit of a jag. He came back and rather than put him into the mainstream, we put him on a modified program and at this stage he’s in rehab before we put him into the mainstream,” Reid told 3AW.
“So rather than him just saying – ‘Yeah, I feel alright’ – we will bring him up through the gears. We’ll do that for the best part of this week and next week and then he’ll go back into the mainstream.”
“We just think it would be stupid to risk anything at this stage of the game. It’s a minor niggle, but no different today than it was when he came back last Thursday.”
Reid said he was confident the former Kangaroos skipper would be ready to take his place in the Crows forward line for their opening Wizard Cup match against Port Adelaide on February 22.
“I’ve got no doubt that he’ll be ready to play. I could suggest to you that he could play in three or four weeks,” he said.
“Channel Ten seem to turn it into a drama every time he gets on the track. I think there’s just a little bit of drama when there’s not much around.”
“The other day he went off because he had a bit of diarrhoea, and you would have thought the world was going to close in. That’s the nature of the beast.”
Reid said that Carey had settled in brilliantly, and was right at home in Adelaide and with the Crows.
“He said himself he was a bit nervous. This is a new environment and we do things a bit differently, but he’s settled in terrific.”
