Try telling Hawthorn that Premiership windows do not exist. The amount of planning and smart trading and drafting that Pelchen and co did to get the club to last years flag proves you wrong. They happily traded Hay, Thompson and were well compensated for Rawlings ( Veale deal ) because they were in no posistion to win a flag. Now they are in a premiership window they are reluctant to trade even Boyle.
I am still amazed at what our club has achieved with the lack of high draft picks and no father sons.

and he nearly got sacked numerous times throughout. I always thought as much as anything, the senior leadership of the playing group were credited with turning their fortunes around, as much as thompson. but anyway...

Depends what our squad looks like and how much game time certain players have.

If we go easy on important players and those recovering from injury because of the ground or a desire to have them traveling, then I would say Adelaide will beat us quite comfortably.

You may do the same and if this is the case it may be one ugly game of football.

Relax - premiership window is just a very "last year" turn of phrase that, when most people use it, means the point when your list peaks. Pelchen rebuilt to have a balanced list peaking at around the same age.

Most folks have stopped using the term because it's so limiting and puts unrealistic parameters on success. As big an impact on premiership success isn't just your list, it is what has happened to the lists around you - after all, we're not playing golf. There have been a few very winnable premierships recently due to injury impacted teams.

2) I don't think anyone except NC himself can judge his career a failure by any stretch at this point - his achievements and his talent is obvious.
3) Even if you do demand such stringent criteria, right now, I don't think there is another coach available to the AFC right now that would be better suited to the job - Malthouse, Williams & Roos are probably past the stage of starting up at another club, Thompson & Clarkson wouldn't move right now, and everyone else is a failure by your criteria.

Also, look at how the carpet got pulled from under Melbourne's feet after Daniher left. Sure he will never be seen as a great coach, but he kept that team competitive for a long time and playing the finals year in, year out, is better than the wooden spoon by a long shot. Sure, I would prefer one premiership and ten years of wilderness to ten years of mediocrity, but you have to realistic as a supporter and as an administrator.

Also, just looking at that list of 'successul coaches', other than Clarkson (for the record I pumped his tyres before it was cool), I really would prefer NC to all of them anyway. Its a fallacy to judge a coach's ability to win a premiership in the future, based on the past. Only the truly greats can pull that off - Matthews, Barassi

Not sure how a trial game thread ends up with NC analysis but what the hell.....

I think overall, and certainly statistically, he has done very well. Of course the question is his finals decision making. Some poor decisions in the 06 prelim and some poor ones in the 07 elimination. At the end of the day any coach is only as good as his list, and therein lies the Crows biggest problem in recent times..recruiting. So many first round picks blown on chasing the mythical matchwinnning key position player, while the chance to secure so many quality midfielders has been lost.

There is no doubt that we have been rebuilding and to his credit NC has been able to engineer this while still getting us into finals. The make up of the 06 prelim final side is drastically different to what we have now and the turnover has been achieved while remaining in finals. He must receive credit for that. Ask many interstate fans if they would "take" the results we have had over the last 4 years, combined with a rebuild, and Im sure the answer would be yes.
