I expected Hawthorn in a tight game as they have a good record here vs us, but I expected us to play better. We simply did not show up. TV was off at 3 quarter time.

It was a pretty pathetic effort tonight. We were afraid to take the game on and deserve to cop it from others.

We'll learn or not learn from this.

We failed to learn from last week, this week was j6st as bad.

Nicks has shown across 6 years he is extremely slow to learn anything.

The evidence is right in front of us.

It would be disingenuous to suggest that we could have lost it at selection. It is as good a team as we can name excluding Izak Rankine (yes, Butts/Murray and Smith/Dowling are 50/50 calls).

A key issue last week was the match-ups. I felt this prior to the match (Max in attack) and McRae exploited this.

The second problem was our use of the extra man in defence. Collingwood placed their extra (often Moore) behind all the other defenders and he ran forward to intercept when we turned the ball over or won a stoppage. Our spare was often between the stoppage and the other forwards/defenders and he watched the ball sail over his head. I don’t expect Hawthorn to use a plus one but Mitchell is a good tactical coach so who knows.

The success of our coaches will be determined by the match-ups we make. Hawthorn use Impey and Amon to run the ball out of the D50 and can create opportunities for their forwards. They also have three good intercept defenders (Barrass, Battle and Sicily). They will try to play Sicily off his man so we need to use Tex if/when he is free. Hawthorn have dangerous forwards but the one to lock down is old man Gunston and to minimise the influence of the pests (Ginnivan and Watson).

Neither midfield is outstanding. ROB has to at least break even and our outside mids (Cumming, Curtin) have to produce more. Hawthorn had a lot of drive from their wings when they were on top of GWS so it’s time to shine boys.

The final wildcard is Weddle. He can play back, midfield or high half forward so he will ask some questions.

Crows by 8 points.

It’s not this week’s selection that is the problem. It’s that our selection philosophy has limited the selectable field by wasting games on spuds or past it players when opportunity to uncover better players has arisen. And it would be unfair to pin this on Nicks, it predates him by many years. It’s an ingrained club philosophy.

I'll wager that the club will not learn from this.
