Carey to miss Kadina

Adelaide is resting Wayne Carey from its Wizard Regional Challenge Series match against Port Adelaide at Kadina on Saturday.

And Tyson Stenglein (groin), Brent Reilly (shoulder) and Trent Hentschel (calf) also are missing from the team that whipped a weakened West Coast by 88 points at AAMI Stadium last Friday night.

Adelaide communications co-ordinator Matthew Robran said Carey had ‘a slight twinge in a driver’ (thigh), but would have played if it had been a regular-season match.

“Wayne will definitely be right for round one (against the Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday, March 28),” Robran said.

The Crows also expect Stenglein, Reilly and Hentschel to be ready for round one.

The four incoming players for the practice match against Port are Rhett Biglands, James Gallagher, Robert Shirley and Luke Jericho, 19, the tall West Adelaide utility who was the Crows’ first pick (No. 32 overall) at the 2002 National AFL Draft.

Biglands and Gallagher have recovered from groin and shoulder injuries respectively.

Adelaide’s squad of 26 for the 2pm match at Kadina is: Massie, Clarke, Burns, Smart, Bassett, Edwards, Bode, Doughty, Shirley, Hudson, Skipworth, Torney, McGregor, Welsh, Johncock, Gallagher, Perrie, McLeod, Burton, Schuback, S. Stevens, Jericho, Ricciuto, Hart, Biglands, Goodwin.

Good luck Mr Jericho!

Is this game on 5AA?

JEZZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!:D

About bloody time. I am really looking forward seeing Jezza play again. I have only seen him play on 2 occasions and he has impressed me in both of those.

For what its worth here is how I think they will line up.

_F: _ 17. Scott Welsh _ 27. Scott Stevens _ 5. Ronnie Burns
HF: _ 18. Graham Johncock _ 22. Ian Perrie _ 23. Andrew McLeod
_C: _ 11. Michael Doughty _ 32. Mark Ricciuto _ 24. Brett Burton
HB: _ 3. Kris Massie _ 16. Ken McGregor _ 21. James Gallagher
_B: _ 7. Nigel Smart _ 8. Nathan Bassett _ 34. Ben Hart
1R: _ 4. Matthew Clarke _ 36. Simon Goodwin _ 9. Tyson Edwards

INT: _ 10. Matthew Bode _ 12. Robert Shirley _ 13. Ben Hudson _ 14. Hayden Skipworth _ 15. Jason Torney _ 26. Jacob Schuback _ 30. Luke Jericho :D _ 35. Rhett Biglands

Apparently Port will play 29 players

I think giving Jericho a game is a smart move. It will give him some idea of whats expected of him. He will know what it takes to play against the best. Better give Jezza a game in the pre-season so if he is needed during the year he will have a pretty good idea of what to expect.

I know we all wish Scotty Welsh was twins, Stiffy. But he ain't!!! :D

I presume the other Scott Welsh, the one in the forward pocket, is really Scott Stevens, who is in the squad, but not in your line-up??

Smart arse:p

Yes I meant Scott Stevens ;). I would expect Jezza to spend some time on half forward flank as he can mark the ball.

It'll be really good to have a look at him in this company - unfotunately will need strong binoculars from Melbourne.
Looking forward to your report (particularly on Ronnie);)
Still no Ladhams?

I am really looking forward to having a good look at Jezza on the weekend. Should be a good experience for him.

As long as Ronnie is played up forward I'll be happy ;)

Interesting that Ladhams is still on the outer. Still I guess that if we take into account who was set to miss its no real surprise that Lads was overlooked

Apologies for crashing your party - but do you think Bassett (or Hart for that matter) will match up on Matty Primus? I'd have thought Biglands would get that role - and I can't see him in your line-up at all.

Exactly. To me, this is the most interesting thing about this game, followed closely by the appearance of young Jericho.

And, go grab your chance with both hands Rob Shirley!

My mistake in leaving him out. Crows will play with 26 players and Port with 29. I think you are right that Biglands or maybe even Hudson will take on Matthew Primus. No one else on our squad will even go close to matching him up on strength and height.

I really hope the likes of Jericho get a real go at this game and not just a few minutes here and there.

The result doesn't matter a fat rat's clacker - giving youngsters an opportunity to shine does, given that -

1. - it's only a trial

2. - 2 key men in our likely forward structure are missing

3. - we need to discover new talent

Jericho is a very likely type and should be given every opportunity.

Good to see Chris Ladhams back as well.

Considering where he was playing last season, this PS and his opportunity this weekend, have been good signs, and should give us all encouragement for his future.

There are definetly encouraging signs. I feel like last year Jezza was somewhat unlucky. Since Westies were playing some excellent footy last year it was really tough to get a senior game even tho Jezza was playing some good footy for the reserves. When he got his one chance he played well. I was at that game and I was impressed with his game. I think he made Westies best players. His team had a bye next week and for the following game all the players that were injured were back and Jezza was dropped. It was disappointing but I think he has bounced back well and his form so far this season has been encouraging.

According to Craigy (see club website for articel) Jezza will be given a quarter maybe a bit more. :( I was hoping he would get at least 3 quarters.

Ladhams gets late shot at another matchwinning act
By MICHELANGELO RUCCI
13mar04

CHRIS Ladhams – the cheeky forward whose last-minute goal ended Port Adelaide's Wizard Cup defence last year – is back hoping to rekindle more than memories in today's country derby at Kadina Oval.

Unsighted in a pre-season dogged by shin soreness, Ladhams yesterday gained a late, but timely chance to push for selection in Adelaide's premiership-season opener by replacing fellow midfielder Matthew Bode in the 26 to face the Power's 28 in today's close of the trial-game circus.
Bode was withdrawn from the Crows' squad yesterday out of concern for soreness through his groin after a demanding pre-season.

Ladhams' recall, at a time when many questioned if he was to become a forgotten Crow, adds potential bite to an Adelaide attack which will be built around Ian Perrie.

With Wayne Carey (thigh) to be rested and second-year gun Trent Hentschel (calf) unavailable, Perrie will be auditioned at centre half-forward. This will let Adelaide's match committee learn if he can be part of the "rotation" policy the Crows have planned in the wake of losing Mark Stevens (knee) at centre half-forward.

"Ian gets the opportunity to be looked at in that situation, to have a good go at it," said Adelaide assistant coach Neil Craig, revealing Perrie also will be given a stint in defence.

This will be when Adelaide will restructure to another rotation, with Sydney recruit Scott Stevens and resuming ruckman Rhett Biglands the obvious candidates to play across half-forward. To be seen is where Adelaide fits 19-year-old Luke Jericho into its line-up after a junior career that brought him national attention as a key forward in the SA under-18 side.

With Adelaide playing a makeshift attack and Port offering an experimental defence, the only true measure of the teams will be in the midfield. "Our midfield has been stable and will remain so," said Craig of an Adelaide engine room primed by captain Mark Ricciuto, Andrew McLeod and Simon Goodwin.

"We're not sure of Port Adelaide now that they don't have Nick Stevens (Carlton) and Josh Francou, so it will be interesting to see what they do in choosing their personnel."

Buoyed by the confidence of last Friday's 88-point thrashing of West Coast at AAMI Stadium – the Crows' only win this pre-season – Adelaide anticipates a more meaningful test today.

"Obviously Port Adelaide will have a much stronger squad than West Coast – and be a good test of the intensity we want in our game," said Craig, dismissing that the country derby will carry into the first true Showdown of the season on May 8. "We want our guys to play with a winning attitude. But beating Port Adelaide in a Wizard Cup game or a trial game is not beating them in a Showdown. The result is irrelevant

They seem keen to have Perrie as part of the team structure.
Consequently in some forwrd rotations he may need to play in defense to be in the team (thats how I intepret the message)
I must admit, he doesn't enthuse me as a defender.
Maybe the Crows were planning to use M.Stevens in defensive roles this year, and now that he's unavailable, is Perrie the next option.
I thought we got S.Stevens for that defensive role? - thats what we were told by the Crows management when traded

How stupid are the AFC coaching staff if they perist with playing Perrie as a defender! Has showed today that his best position is CHF where he provides us a good target & can take a few grabs. Agree we would be better using S Stevens as a defender. Bones described the use of Hudson in the forward line as "tragic", so I think we can forget about the idea of using him instead of Perrie as a forward (ie. equivalent of using Sarge as a defender)!

How would Hudson go as a defender - would be easier transisition than trying to be a forward - look at Hentschell.
I think Perrie is a forward, and very glad to hear he is doing well today.
