All that is, except Ladhams, but we know what he can do. We may well need some Ladhams magic to win this, perhaps he needs to spend the entire first quarter on the bench as a bit of a rev up?

If there was one more tall coming back I'd give Ladhams the boot this week though...

Question for future weeks, when Carey, Burton, Stevens and Welsh all start pressuring for spots, any chance we might go with one ruckman? Clarke is in sensational touch and seems ready to run out virtually entire matches. What's the chance? Could maybe Kenny do 5 minutes a quarter to give him a break??

I would rather we keep both ruckmen in the 22 as it's worked well for us so far, Clarke is in good form at the moment but if he was to struggle against a King type ruckmen then we have the option of throwing a gung-ho in Biglands at them,

If there is 2 changes this week i believe Crowell & Gallagher will be heading back to the SANFL, Crowell is just not up to it & Gallagher last sunday looked like the bit of criticism he received the week before got the better of him.

We also have Chambers to support King in the ruck... he's nothing special, he jumps, provides a contest around the ground and basically has a real go.

It should be a good match, a couple of goals in it either way I reckon, especially if Geelong continue on from last week's improved form against Hawthorn.

I think noddy's "man???" Ben Marsh is almost certain to play now that he has been named in the 25 . A scary thought indeed, but I don't think he'll play as a forward. Rather that Biglands will play up forward and Marsh will get a 10 minute run at the end of each quarter to give Clarke a breather.

Advantages are we can keep our normal structure of going long and down the guts. Disadvantages are that if Marsh gets slaughtered and Biglands has to go into ruck the whole structure goes arse up.

I may be wrong, but I think it's hold your breath time!!!

Yes it is questionable......

Marsh's inclusion worries me greatly.....I don't see why we can't have Clarke ruck the majority of the time, with Biglands relieving him when he isn't playing forward. I doubt Rhett will be that great an influence up forward that we can't afford to lose him in that position for 10 or so minutes here and there. We have others to pinch hit up forward I think, without resorting to including Big Ben in the side.

Having said that, it seems Geelong might have taken a taller than normal side into the game?? ( I think I read that somewhere on a Geelong board/forum) Marsh might be needed but still, I reckon one of Malthouse's cardboard cutouts might be more effective.

On the plus side, Sammy Newman has confidently predicted the Cats to get over the line.

Geelong went in with a similar team last week against Hawthorn... makes a pleasent change from what we were doing at the start of the year when we asked Steven King to ruck all day and our forward line consisted of Kent Kingsley and Cameron Mooney.

Sam Newman was confident Geelong would win last week and he was absolutely spot on, so we'll see if he's right again this week.

lol, now your getting even funnier Seiny, comparing us to the Hawks, probably the worse team in the comp ... please. Also, most South Australians take no notice of Sammy Newman, so we couldn't give a toss who he is supporting / picking, as it won't change the result of the game.

This post comes with the disclaimer that I know stats can be overused and can sometimes be used to make *any* point:

As a ruckman, Marsh should either be getting hitouts (to feed the midfielders) or taking marks (as a forward target or dropping back in defence).

Marsh has done neither.

In his career, he's averaged 1.6 marks per game. Not enough.
He's averaged 9.0 hitouts per game. Not enough.


Compare him to another 2nd-string ruckman - David Pittman - and Ben doesn't look good. Pitto played as a backup in ruck but also played in defence, areas where you don't usually rack up heaps of stats.

Pitto averaged 3.0 marks per game (almost double Marsh) and 12.7 hitouts per game.

Even a noted defender like Pittman had more effect in front of goal than Marsh. Pitto averaged 3.6 goals per year, Marsh is averaging 3.2.

Pittman was an under-rated player for the Crows. Also, one major difference to Marsh it Pitto had heart. Marsh's lack of is why he will never succeed at AFL level. We are better off finding some raw young ruckman who will at least givev 100%.

Crowell will play against Geelong. It looks like there will only be 2 changes this week: Smart and Burns in for Gallagher and Ladhams. Gags is named for Norwood.

It looks like Welshy will play for Sturt reserves.

Looks like your right Stiffy. Bit strange though naming Welsh in the squad if there was never any intention of playing him. ie. He would definitely play if he was match fit, otherwise why have him as an emerg?

So which backman will play up forward as a 2nd markign target? Bassett perhaps.
