Firstly it was a fantastic day out. It was a real carnival atmosphere and the Oval was packed. There we a lot fo supporters from both side but one would sat that about 70% of them had the Crows merchandise. Macca23, you are absolutely correct, the Kadina Bakery has some awsome pies and pasties.:D

To the game now. I just don't get out love affair with the flanks and pockets:confused: . Its like there are magnets around the boundary line attracting the ball. What ****es me off is that so MANY times we had the coridor open and a number of options through the centre of the ground yet we went out wide. In the entire game we only had 2 shots directly in front of goal one was a mark from Perrie and the other was from Skippy (RFK will be one nervous boy. I reckon he could get a couple of weeks for that late strike to Skippy's head) and not surprisingly both of those were goals. We kicked 9.18 for the game to 10.5. Thats 12 more scoring shots than Port. The conversion rate is directly influenced by where we get our shots from. You can't kick goals effectively hugging the boundry line.

Onto the positives now. Ian Perrie has to play CHF. Although he led wide ona few occasions he was fantastic today. I reckon he took about dozen marks and at least 7-8 of those were in pack situations. Some fantastic marking from Sarge. He used the ball well and kicked 3 goals from memory. He played at CHF all day and his opponent for the majority of the game was Toby Thurstans.

Another one who I was extremely impressed with was McGregor. He wore Tredrea like a glove. Tredrea didn't have a big impact in a half of footy he was playing. Kenny spoiled extremely well and took a couple of fantastic contested marks backing into packs. Very impressed with his game.

Johncock was burning all day. He was all over the place getting possesions at will. I think he is set for a big year. I reckon he would have finished with close to 30 possesions.

I think Doughty has stiched up his spot for round 1. He played on the wing. Got plently of the ball and used it very well. One thing I have been critical of Doughty in the past is his "softness" around the contest. He went in hard today and got some hard ball gets. I think him and Reilly have to be played on the wing. They are both deadset wingman. Burton on the other wing was useless. He got plently of the ball but boy did he burn it. His kicks had more height than depth. When he rested up forward briefly in the 4th QTR he was at his best. Even took a very good mark bu missed a goal.

Schuback was great in the 2nd half. He came on into the forward towards the end of the 2nd quarter but wasn't really in the play much. In the 2nd half he was moved to HBF and he played to perfection. That kid has a fantastic left foot kick. Very impressed with his game again.

Biglands played here there and everywhere today. Started off at FB on Matthew Primus and did a good job. He played in the ruck a bit and played up forward in the 2nd half. He competed well but dropped a few marks. Clarke was fantastic in the 1st half. He took 3 contested marks in defence which brought a smile to my face :D Hudson started at FF and struggled. Later on he was given a bit of time in the ruck and he continued on with his willingness to give a contest everytime.

Gallagher was also very good int the 2nd half. He played at HBF then across HFF and onball. He got a fair bit of footy and used it well.

Scotty Stevens was in and out of the game. He did a couple of good things but he will not be a world beater just a good role player.

Shirley was workman like. He was at the bottom of the pack and tackled well. Dind't get a heap of the ball. His opponent was Peter Burgoyne who did well.

Skippy was good in the 4th quarter but he might struggle to hold his place for round 1. Surprisingly Bassett started on the bench. He played well in the 2nd half. Took a fantastic mark in the 4th.:D

Luke Jericho came on half-way through the 3rd and played up forward. He was lively. The kid has some flair about him. He has a huge leap on him and takes a very good grab. I still think he is a year or 2 away from AFL footy but definetly worth keeping around. He was more impressive in his quarter and a half of footy than Ronnie was for the entire game. Ronnie played in the forward line all day and was a useless as tits on the bull.

All senior player played well. Goody was fantastic again, Roo was rock solid, McLeod was magic and didn't get out of the 2nd gear.

Bottom Line: we have a crap game plan, we must play Perrie at CHF and Burton in the forward line. Our forward line structure needs a lot of work. We most definetly need to straighten up. The intensity and tackling was very good from the Crows.

Thanks Stiffy.

Seeing the scores this afternoon, the obvious worry was the conversion rate. 1 in 3 as against Port's 2 in 3. What a surprise to find out it was the result of going too wide...

At least we got plenty of ball.

Don't suppose you - or someone who's seen a lot of our praccie matches - want to have a stab at what our 22 (or preliminary 25) might be for round one against North? That could be another thread on its own I guess.

I reckon this would be a bit hard as a lot of player put their hand up today but here is who I think should be in the team.

_F: _ 17. Scott Welsh _ 2. Wayne Carey _ 24. Brett Burton
HF: _ 18. Graham Johncock _ 22. Ian Perrie _ 23. Andrew McLeod
_C: _ 33. Brent Reilly _ 32. Mark Ricciuto _ 11. Michael Doughty
HB: _ 3. Kris Massie _ 16. Ken McGregor _ 9. Tyson Edwards
_B: _ 37. Trent Hentschel _ 8. Nathan Bassett _ 34. Ben Hart
1R: _ 4. Matthew Clarke _ 20. Tyson Stenglein _ 36. Simon Goodwin

INT: _ 35. Rhett Biglands _ 7. Nigel Smart _ 15. Jason Torney _ 21. James Gallagher

EMG: _ 13. Ben Hudson _ 27. Scott Stevens _ 26. Jacob Schuback

This probably won't be the line up but it would be the team that I would pick

Excellent summary Stiffy!! Great work and thanks!!

I listened to the game on 5AA and everything you've said was confirmed by them. The commentators could not believe our pre-occupation with hugging the boundary, and the short stupid chipping game that goes with that, ending up with having to shoot for goal from the acute angles.

I'll make a prediction now. If we stick with this stupid game plan, which appears to be an exact replica of the rubbish that I watched last week, then Ayres is a dead man serving out his last year. We will lose games that we should never lose and we will under-achieve. Our mid-field was rampaging today as it was last week, and when it is firing like that, there should be options galore ahead of it, not just out on the boundary.

Football is about structure and we have a great structure in the mid-field, a good structure in defence and sweet bugger-all up forward. Put Jonathon Brown in our side to straighten us up - just one player - and we would be one hell of a chance to take out the flag.

We don't have him of course and it's 2 years too early for Fergus Watts. IMO Perrie is our best bet for that spot, but I don't care who plays there or whether they get a kick as long as we go straight down the centre and our sharkers know where the ball will spill. We won a flag in '97 and '98 with exactly that team rule. Blighty always said that footy was a simple game - first get it and then secondly kick it long to advantage straight down the ground.

The one thing that did appear to be good Stiffy was our work rate, and the form of the big guns in the mid-field, Mcgregor, Perrie and Johncock.

Who would you say won the ruck battles, and who was the best of our ruckmen, Stiffy?

Work rate and tackling was excellet although one could well assume that the likes of McLeod, Roo and to some extent Goody never got out of 2nd gear.

I think our ruck division was better on the day. Clarke was the pick of the bunch IMHO because he spent most of the time in the ruck. Biglands was used more in KPs and only had a little bit of time in the ruck. Hudson gave Clarkey a breather and was his usual self.

Primus didn't play in the 2nd half and from the Power I think Lade was the pick of their ruckman.

Just on the Brown comment. I don't think that would help one bit because we go wide even if there is a very good option down the centre of the corridor. On a number of occasions today Perrie had to lead wide because he was being ignored. Its a major flaw in our game play. Even a Carey in his prime wouldn't fix it. Put Warren Tredrea in at CHF for us and we will still kick it down the flanks. I think our game plan is to kick it to a lose man. So many time today players are eading to the flanks. So many times we had a few otions down the centre and we ignored them.

If we persist with this game plan Ayres is dead man walking and we WILL miss the 8. To win games with this game plan our midfield has to dominate and our forward line would have to have a freaky day out and convert 70% of their opportunities. Considering that 99% of our set shots are hugging the boundy line we got no chance in hell.:(

Doughty had an excellent game against West Coast as well when he came on in place of the injured Reilly. One of the things that really stood out about his game was exactly what you have said - the way he went in for the hard ball. They would be my two wingmen, with Burton up forward.

Jericho got a bit of a rap on the radio for his cameo effort when he came on. He's a very versatile player - where do you see him making it Stiffy??

I was really impressed with Dogga's agression. Certainly was a pleasent surprise. He is a deadset wingman as is Reilly. For years we have struggled to get a good wingman, now we have 2 so its about bloody time we used them.

Burton is a ball getter. Today he got his fair share of footy but boy is he as dumb as. His disposal was shocking, it was far worse than Perrie's 4 years ago. When he plays up forward he adds another dimension to our forward line. It showed today when he had a brief stint up forward.

Thats just it. I don't think I have a position for him. I saw him as a running defender against Glenelg and was very impressed with his ability to carry the ball and rebound while keeping his man quiet. Today he went up forward and showed a few glimpses that to me suggest he can be a very capable forward. He has the athletic ability of Brett Burton but is "calmer" than Birdman. I probably see him making it as a defender to start of with and probably move forward when he gets 50 odd games of experience. He is one of those players that will be used here there and everywhere. A bit like Hentschel.

Your comments were echoed by the 5AA commentary team as well Stiffy, on both counts. They were very critical of Burton for his poor disposal.

Just on the commentators:

KG - always pro Crows while trying soooooo hard to be fair - but doesn't make it!! :)

Wildy - was the pick of them today and seems able to see things in a balanced perspective.

McDermott. He's a bitter twisted sandshoe who has never forgiven the club for getting rid of him. He thinks Perrie is no good at CHF, which should almost guarantee that he will be.

Cornesy.I never knew how bad he really is. He called the last quarter because KG was drawing a raffle or something. Cornesy would have to be very close to being the most boring innefective excuse for a commentator of all time - he just doesn't have the voice for calling. Only got excited when he was mentioning Kane Cornes. :) Very very pro Port!!

I brought my walkman along today to listen to 5AA while watching the game. I couldn't hear a thing so it was a waste.

I walked in front of the 5AA comentary box at HF when I was stocking up on pies:D and McDermott and Cornes looked a sorry sight. They had this bunch of port supporters in front of them, tattoos, no teeth and drunk as.:D

It was probaly better that I couldn't hear a thing because I bet McDermott mastubabted when Port youngsters got to the ball. Did he have a multiple orgasm whenever Thurstans got close to the ball?????:D

There was this weird kid. He had his face painted in Crows colors but carried the Port flag with him. He wa circling the oval. I think the kid has a split personality disorder.:p

I really like your starting line-up Stiffy, except Smart would probably start and Hentschel would be on the interchange. The fact that we like it almost guarantees that it won't be that way.;)

Bode will probably get first crack at the interchange instead of Gallagher. I think they will have Scott Stevens in there somewhere as well but not too sure who would miss then.

I am likely to change my mind if I think about it a bit more. I think you are close to the mark, Stiffy. I agree with the 25. I wonder whether they will try and slot Stevens into the 22 somehow. I'm surprised that Doughty and Gallagher are in the mix, but they seem to have have derserved the chance and appear to be in favour with selectors.

Burton is the enigma to me. I'm half thinking the Eagles might get him in round 1.

F: Scott Welsh Wayne Carey Brett Burton
HF: Graham Johncock Ian Perrie Mark Ricciuto
_C: Brent Reilly Simon Goodwin Michael Doughty
HB: Kris Massie Ken McGregor Tyson Edwards
_B: Nigel Smart Nathan Bassett Ben Hart
1R: Matthew Clarke Tyson Stenglein Andrew McLeod

INT: Rhett Biglands Trent Hentschel Jason Torney James Gallagher

EMG: from... Ben Hudson Scott Stevens Jacob Schuback Robert Shirley, Hayden Shipworth.

Not really. If they continue playing Burton as a wingman as I think they will then Stevens will get his HFF role. That would only leave Hentschel and a back up ruckman. Considering that Hentschel can play as a flanker and pick up smaller opponents, I think Torney unfortunatly might be on the outer. Pitty because I really like the guy.

Guys don't be surprised if we lose round 1 and possibly have 0-6 start to the season. ayres then gets the chop and we start playing some excellent footy and make the 8.

Im glad Perrie had a good day out and should do his confiedence some good leading into the start of the Home and Away season. Perrie definatley has to play at CHF and Carey at FF and Welsh, Burns and Johncock playing at their feet collecting the crumbs.I am VERY disapointed on oru conversion rate and if this isnt full proof to the AFC that this wide gameplan is not a suitable one and it will bring the AFC no success in 2004 then I will be darned:confused: Surely the 'brains trust' would know that it is easier to kick a goal straight infront or on a slight angle than to be trying to kick a goal on an a acute angel and SFA daylight between the two big sticks;) I think the forwards need to lead infront of goal instead of leading out wide. When we play good direct footy we are a 100% better side and with the drive through the middle of the ground we get from Goodwin,Ricciuto and Mcleod this game plan we have now is just stupid and wasting the talent we have got:mad:

Anyway a week off and then it is on for young and old for 2004:D :D :D :D

I have strong doubts about that statement there.

I thought thats why you got Carey? It was supposed to straighten you up and stop the leading down the flanks/pockets.

Obviously this didnt work, and your new improved gameplan this year seems intent on only going down the flanks/pockets and never going straight down the middle.

It seems to me to be a gameplan choice, not a lack of player choice and i dont think Jon Brown, Warren Tredrea, or any other player would make a spot of difference. You guys just seem intent on going out wide all the time this year.

Burton belongs on the full forward line. In 2002, he kicked 51 goals and the great thing with him is when he is in the full forward position he doesn't know what he is doing so the opposition has no idea whats coming, going or what to expect. Then put Carey in one pocket, Welsh in the other and whammo, we will be kicking more sausage rolls than you can imagine.

There are no excuses for playing the style of game we obviously are during the PS.
However I do not believe for one moment that the brains trust of the AFC, believe this style win premierships.
To have played this style in each of the PS games, is indicative that they are practising this gameplan, as Plan A, or Plan B?
I can only conclude (and fingers crossed, hopeing) that this new gameplan we are rehearsing is for specific teams, or to counter specific gameplans of opposition teams. Plan A, is the more direct style that we have been comparing to Brisbane, and we know the preferrred Ayres way of playing football.
I believe we saw it for one quarter against St Kilda, the obvious difference in gameplan to the other 3 quarters was as if someone turned a light on. Since that game we have gone back to the way we played in the first 3 qtrs of that game. This why I believe we are rehearsing this specific gamestyle as plan B. Where else could we have practised it under match conditions?

I hear what you're saying, and what Stiffy is saying, but I think Macca23 is on the right track.

Carey hasn't been successful at straightening us up because of his much publicised inability to take an overhead mark.

While our game plan currently is to use the free man, who is inevitably wide on the field, having a big strong presence such as a Brown or Tredrea who is a really good mark in a contested situation would both change our gameplan and would demand that our players coming forward kick it to them. Players of that ilk wouldn't lead out wide and their success, as well as the team's success with them staying at CHF would ensure our plan of attack stays this way.

But yeah, the way we're playing at the moment, you wouldn't think anyone would be successful at CHF, however, I'd hope a J. Brown/Tredrea type would change our philosophy. As it is, we have no chance of getting such a player so it's a moot point really.

Thats 12 more scoring shots than Port. The conversion rate is directly influenced by where we get our shots from. You can't kick goals effectively hugging the boundry line.
Firstly, good report Stiffy! :) Don't think you find any Crows supporter who is not fustrated by us going wide.

Good to see Sarge prove the critics wrong! I was confident he would come good & we now must persist with him as he gives us a genuine target. You don't fluke 12-13 marks, most of them in a pack situation! BTW, I thought Chaplin was on him in the 2nd half (according to 5AA)??

How many Showdowns now have I been calling for Kenny to play on Tredrea!! I just hope the coaching staff remember this & don't revert to playing Nigel on Tredders in the next showdown. Pity we didn't play Brisbane in a pre-season game so we could see Kenny play on Lynch. He is our strongest defender & should take the oppositions best/stongest forward.

Looks like Stiffy's big pre-season is paying off. Now that he had added to his endurance, he gives us another option in the midfield mix (& allows us to rest the likes of Roo up forward).

Still believe Burton is a better wingman, but clearly not in as good form as Dogga or Reilly. Burton struggles more than most to regain his touch, so he may have to come back to the midfield mix via forward line, bench or even the Eagles if he is really struggling.

Schuback was great in the 2nd half. He came on into the forward towards the end of the 2nd quarter but wasn't really in the play much. In the 2nd half he was moved to HBF and he played to perfection. That kid has a fantastic left foot kick. Very impressed with his game again.
Seen enough of Schuey now to know that he should be getting game time in front of the likes of Burns. Got to persist with promissing kids.

Our 3 ruckmen should mainly play in the ruck unless we get desperate. Someone should copy the footage of Clarke marking the ball & show it to him over & over ... as that should be the normal expectation of him.

Gallagher was also very good int the 2nd half. He played at HBF then across HFF and onball. He got a fair bit of footy and used it well.
By becoming more adaptable, Gags will find it easier to come into calculation for our 22. One thing he does do is use the ball well. Talking of this, did Ladhams not get a go at all??

Shirley was workman like. He was at the bottom of the pack and tackled well. Dind't get a heap of the ball. His opponent was Peter Burgoyne who did well.

Skippy was good in the 4th quarter but he might struggle to hold his place for round 1. Surprisingly Bassett started on the bench. He played well in the 2nd half. Took a fantastic mark in the 4th.:D
Both Shirley & Skippy are fringe players who will probably have to play well for the Eagles & wait for injury to get selected.

All senior player played well. Goody was fantastic again, Roo was rock solid, McLeod was magic and didn't get out of the 2nd gear.
These gun-3 are still the key to us. Confident Goody is in for a stellar year. If 2 out of 3 play well in any given game, we are unlikely to lose it if most others are making solid contributions.

I like this side better, but have made a couple of changes. I agree we don't need to go in with three ruckmen, Hudson will have to wait for injury or earn his spot.

Would also have Gallagher on the bench ahead of Ladhams at this stage and Doughty in. I think that this side has more flexibility off the bench with a ruckman, onballer and two versatile players.

I have also put Welsh at FF as he is more likely to straighten us up than Carey and will lead strongly from the square, with Carey staying closer to goal or dropping into space behind the leading forward.

Hentschel is stiff, as is Shirley, but there is no harm to have them earn their spots.
