They cleared that up last week. The 4 on field umpires communicate with each other via earpieces.

But my understanding the situation occured with a non controlling umpire. So in what situation would a non controlling umpire make a decision from an ear piece conversation with other umpires. Makes no sense. I think its suspicious. The only way I think they should have ear pieces in at all is if its linked to the broadcast for auditing.
