in both final quarters vs swans & cats, especially tonight we had several Key Key players on the bench for most of the final quarter... but the positive thing was both times we were able to produce the winning goals after falling behind.

5AA really rated the back 5/6 highly tonight and gave Rutten some really positive comments. Van Berlo got involved quite a bit and Hudson spent most of the night in charge of the ruck.

Bode was played a bit in the midfield, McLeod showed positive signs, Goodwin had a cracker of a game & Johncock and Reilly stood out a bit.

Well, just got back and have a few observations. I am now 100% sure that Mattner is twins, one plays the first half, the other, the smart footy player one then plays the second half, he made some huge screw ups in the 1st half, but come the second half he was an excellent contributor. Rutten and Bassett both played very well in defense ( of Sydney's 8 goals, 4 came from dodge at best free's). Van Berlo faded in and out as kids do but looked good, did some nice stuff. Being a Torney fan I was not impressed with him tonight, prior to him getting injured. He managed to "lose his man" alot, which when you are a defender , that isnt good. Goodwin, McLeod and Roo (with very limited time) all looked good. Shirley is still Shirley. Other than running into a few pack , Watts needed a map tonight to find the footy.
One concern was the 4 field umpires tonight, I didnt recongise any of the names, but they were absolute rubbish. Didnt really favor either side (other than maybe the 7-8 in a row Sydney got in the last quater to keep the game close) , they confused everyone ; and they really didnt like Barry Hall he was binged for some very soft stuff ; if these umps are the future of the AFL, then we have problems.

Ok well I guess a win is a win, but christ it was an ugly one!

Gotta say the crowd was pretty good considering the weather which was bloody horrible, very difficult conditions.

My best was Bassett, he was great down back, showed so much courage on numerous occasions even running back with the flight of the ball into a leading Big Bad Bazza  on several occasions and taking the mark.

Bazza had a shocker, Rutten was one of my best aswell, Bock started on him and did pretty well and then Rutten was moved to him. Truck gave him nothing and was so cool down back, took some good marks, all in all a great display by him.

Mattner, had a bit of a dodgy first 1qtr but his 3rd qtr was unreal and really turned the match, his tackling, chasing and desperation was great. I really like him, he is just exciting, even when he is ********ing up. His bump on Maxwell to dispose him off the ball for Goodwin to kick a goal was awesome.

Stiffy played a great game, looked solid down back and I initially wanted him to play up forward but I now think he is better use down back. Didnt play much in the second half but his 1st half was great.

Macca played a great game in patches, his goal on half time was pretty much the Macca of old. I look forward to seeing him produce something special this season.

Still frustrating we are going so wide, I was impressed with Mattner because he seemed to be one of the few who would kick it back into the corridor. Alot of ********ty chipping about especially in the 4th qtr, Im not sure if this is down to the conditions or Sydneys constant flooding. (they are by far the most boring side in the AFL)

The Count played a solid game without being a standout, Meesen was ok, still a long way off. Ferg didnt play much but his attack on the footy was good to see.

I think one of the real positives to come out of the match was the forward line pressure, they did not let the ball out of the attacking 50 without a real fight and Sydney had to work for everything.

All in all it was a frustrating game mainly due to the conditions and Sydneys tactics but we did show some glimpses which was good. By far from all doom and gloom this season.

hi guys

don't suppose you could give a swans fan a bit of an update on how our boys are travelling??
Captain Kirk was ********ing sensational. Nicks had a HUGE 4th quarter where he kicked 4 goals on Begley. Jude Bolton and Paul Williams were the usual class acts. Schneider is a dynamite and Dampsey did a fantastic job at CHB on Perrie. Big Bad Barry Hall was not interested. Gave away a couple of silly 50 meter penalties and nearly put Bassett in tommorrow land :D

Pretty good summary. You saw the best and worst of Mattner and can someone please tell me again why is Burton in the leadership group?????? A deadset tosser. DROP HIM

Sheesh the things I do for you people - sitting out in the open air in the cold and rain, my jeans are satched! :D

Positives

Mattner - The kid is tough and hard and, although its only pre season pansyball I really think he will be one to surprise. Has brain freezes at times but not to the extent of a Burton, was very impressed with his good things and could tolerate his bad things (It was wet, VERY WET, I'll make an excuse for him this time)

Mcleod - Though he had limited game time the glimpses that this bloke showed were the Macca of old. When watching he seriously was a cut above the rest and he just has that WOW factor that not even Roo has, this bloke is special.

Meesen - Not so much in the best all night but I thought I'd mention him, this kid will be a star, and not just any star, a frickin brick sh*thouse of a star! He did some really clever things tonight in the last 2 or 3 minutes that helped Adelaide keep possession. My heart was in my mouth when he landed that grubber kick about 2mm in from the boundary line and out for a throw in but he has a good footy brain, in 2 years time he'll be a monster.

Sarge - Jeez this bloke plays his guts out. I would probably pin him as the best tonight just for sheer all around effort. Always provides a contest and is strong in the clinches. Will never be the most talented big bloke going around but he tries and tries and tries. I just wonder how far advanced he would be if Gary Ayres had actually stuck with him in the first place and given him a crack at CHF for a considerable amount of time.

Stevo: What more can be said, he and Welshy are the keys to us scraping into the finals IMO. Both important tonight without really being in the best.

The Backline minus Torney: I'm a big wrap for old Jase Torney but he was poo tonight before being injured with what seemed to be a lower back injury. The rest of the backs really stood up pretty well I thought and Benny Rutten played another solid game for us. Basset proved why he's probably the most underrated player in our entire backline, and even Bock (yes, Bock) did some good things tonight. Overall a solid contribution in a scrappy game.

Summary:

Good overall team contribution with not too many standouts. At times the Crows played very cutesy football again, especially for wet weather footy and seemed to refuse to utilise the set of pins god gave them. Continually handpassing when they should have been simply moving the ball on by foot frustrated me at times. Against a Port Adelaide or a West Coast we would have been punished severely for the way we played (Sydney had their chances but inaccurate kicking cost them/saved us)

Rotation was the key of the night so that all blokes got a fair crack at the cookie and so no one really had a chance to dominate (though from where i sat Sarge was best on ground for the game time he played) For pyjama football it even got quite exciting there at the finish, it's nice to actually be on the right end of a close one for a change.

Thought the young blokes played pretty well tonight.

Schuey of course kicked the clincher and has a fair amount of pace on him. I've never been a fan but if he could slot in as a crumming forward then he could be dangerous, I'd cautiously pencil him in for round one.

Meese showed why he was so highly rated and always provided a contest. Didn't look out of place at all and were it not for his body size I'd have him in there at round 1. Expect him to play around week 8-10 of the h & a season.

Van Berlo made a couple of small errors but they really came about from lack of experience more than anything. I'd like to see him bulk up a bit more so that he can go and get some more of his own hard ball instead of receiving so often, but hey, every team needs a receiver and I think he can provide us good drive off the backline. Slot him in for round 1 - he's ready.

Fergus looked a touch out of place at times. Did some good work in chasing down defenders and did try his hardest but he needs to position himself better. I still have faith in him becoming a good player but Craigie needs to give this kid more game time. I'd actually slot him on the bench somewhere and try and rotate him with a Mark Stevens as much as possible. I know that might seem a bit soon but we need to start developing our youth for the next assault on the flag in 5-7 years time.

As i said previously Mattner's hardness at the footy was really impressive and although there were stupid mistakes there at times he provides us with a toughness that we so sorely need. Watch him this year, most improved player (yep I'm jinxing everyone tonight!)

Negatives:

*The Crows and their inability to capitalise on major periods of dominant play only to watch the Swans kick 2 in succession (happened a couple of times tonight)

*Jason Torney - you disappointed me tonight oh Grasshopper

*Those pansy arsed little orange twigs out in the middle tonight. Favoured no one, confused everyone and should be shot. Some ludicrous decisions and plenty of things that were paid one minute and ignored the next. Woeful umpires - lift your game.

*Trento and his lack of concentration at times in dropping about 3 or 4 sitters. The kid has talent but he needs to concentrate more.

Overall:

A nothing game in the scheme of things but its good to win a close one for once and so early in the season. Our elite are still up there with the best (Roo, Goody and Macca looked great in the time they had)

Our defence looks like it will be our best attribute this season (strange when we've always had classy midfields but I really don't see anyone putting 120 points past us consistently with the backline players we have. I just pray Harty will come back ASAP)

I love having Huddo in there, his mongrel and spirit is fantastic. Go big fella and shove it up em! I really think the early predictions of gloom and doom by many are a bit silly, I look at our list and I see a good starting lineup, it's the depth that's the main concern.

I took many positives away from tonights game (mainly the fact we won because I woulda been mighty f*cked off if we had lost by a point AND i'd been p*ssed on from a great height!)

Bring on the real footy now, I'm pumped and also very very cold. If anyone needs me I'll be defrosting on the heater and recovering from frost bite :D

Yeah Burton had a shocker tonight, just played silly football.

I think Burton does do more good things than bad though but tonight was by far an off night.
...I fear it is actually becoming the norm......

Leader.. ..........it's a worry

Burton as a leader is a bit of a worry.

What's probably even worse is that, didn't the players have a vote type thing to work out who was going to be in the leadership group?? I thought I may have read that somewhere.... :o
