Wanna add why to that?
Only buy the ultimate beverage package if you are an alcoholic. You probably need to drink 10 drinks per day to break even with the cost.
Don't do the cruise shore excursions (way overpriced). Book independently and you'll probably save over 50%.
Don't buy premium dinners or chefs table. These aren't worth the extra cost. I've always found the normal dinners quite good.
Expect additional charges like an extra $15 a day for house keeping and 18% gratuity on drinks to be added to the bill and not part of the cost you have already paid booking the cruise. They always add these costs on your account at the end.
Expect the pool and chairs by the pool to be crowded each day. Got to get up early to claim a chair.
Do go and see the shows on the cruise theatre and comedy acts.
Do get off the boat at the ports and see the city.

Was gonna go a low end cruise.
But great uncle was going to go same season, so I delayed mine from nov 19 to feb 20 to go silver seas (nearly went ponant)
Yeah yeah, high end and 4x the cost as what I planned. But goi with family effectively on my 30th (cruise starts 5 days after my 30th) was a nice touch

Thought it would be evenly mixed young and old, being more of a family activity throughout life
It’s a great family activity. Went 2 years ago on 12 day cruise with the wife and 7 year old son and we had an absolute ball. There is always something to do or just laze around it’s up to you.
The mix was fairly even, families, 20/30s and older people.

Sounds great - would love to see Antarctica that way, although I suppose apart form those sightseeing flights there is no other way. I know what you mean about the price though, we (sisters and brother) just booked the folks on an anniversary cruise (50th) to the Kimberley through this mob and there was no change from $25k for the two of them.. Was something that they've been wanting to do for ages and it does look great, but so it should for those prices!So how else would you see Antarctica?

Been on 2 cruises, one to Vanuatu and stops along the way, didn't mind it. Then went on one that departed from Cairns and went to Milne Bay and absolutely loved it, lots of snorkeling and mingling with the locals, beautiful part of the world.
I am in my late 50s though but there were plenty of young people on the Milne Bay cruise.

I have never been on a cruise myself, but would be open to going on one within Australia. Does anyone know if you need a passport if the ship is only going to Australian ports, for example Perth - Adelaide - Melbourne - Sydney - Brisbane?

Actually 57yo and never been on a boat for more than 24 hours (Stockholm to Helinski overnight). Never been interested but will eventually do the Inside Passage (Canada) and Antartica.
A mate and his wife like cruising but only probably coz he can pig out at the buffet (he is slightly obese).
Can’t understand why you would go a cruise for 14 days and spend 9 of them at sea. Need to do adventurous things and go places (like being in the Amazon rainforest for 4 days and trekking to Machu Picchu for 4 days like I did last year).

All I can guess is that you are a fugitive and can't risk applying for a passport.

I did a 10 day cruise through the Mediterranean about 5 years ago and loved it
Venice -> Ancona -> Santorini -> Izmir -> Istanbul -> Kefalonia -> Split -> Venice
* Don't buy the drink pass in advance. I think it was about $900 AUD for the 10 days for 2 of us so I opted out of it. Then just as we were about to board the ship you could purchase it for about $500 which I did. I am telling you I smashed that drinks package, I made a deal with a couple of the waitresses not to serve me anything that wasn't alcoholic for the whole trip which at the time seemed like a good idea. Wasn't the best idea when severely hung over before I was to dock at Kefalonia the same waitress ended up making me have cognac with a coke for breakfast
* The meals were pretty good, we had either a buffet or you had a specific seating time at the restaurant. The food was good at both, obviously the restaurant was better but having to wait until about 9 for our seating every night meant the buffet got a good smashing. We didn't realise you had to book at time early as the seating times were either 5pm, 7pm or 9pm and weren't able to be changed
* Plenty of bars on board, but don't expect to be making heaps of friends that are aged between 20-35 that aren't families. I didn't have kids at the time and this still didn't bother me as the kids weren't allowed in the bars.
* There is a casino, which I smashed a fair bit. I was smoking at the time and you could smoke in the casino. So I would just sit myself at a blackjack table with the barmaids bringing black Russians across to me.
* Don't do the shore excursions unless you have a limited time at the location and there is a fair bit of travel involved, they are a rip off
* If you don't like to drink and/or gamble there isn't a lot to do for young/middle aged people who don't have kids. Having said that there is still a gym and pool and other stuff going on like the shows. But I am not much of a show type of guy and for certain nights it is a formal night. We were spending 6 weeks around europe at the time so I wasn't carrying a suit with me for 2 nights of entertainment
Now as much as I loved the cruise I would not do one from Australia. Days at sea become quite boring unless you want to watch the same 10 movies over and over agin or sit by an over crowded pool. My cruise only had 2 of 10 days at sea so that was doable but some cruises from Australia can have 5-7 days of a 10-12 day cruise at sea.
The view from on top of the cruise ship leaving Venice was bloody amazing!

we are doing our first cruise next year, cruising from Brisbane upto Cairns and back for 7 days. something we have been talking about for awhile and decided to bite the bullet and book a cruise

doesn't stop at islands, but stops at Airlie Beach, Port Douglas and Cairns for the day
