So Derm reckons that the huns treatment of pretty boy Trent Croad is unfair and says "it was annoying to see so much conjecture over an article about Trent Croad, a young talent who has done everything possible to play good footy".

"So why does the journalistic world debate the merits of such an article?

Probably, because Croad is the epitome of a young successful man, and Australian culture does not deal well with someone who has success at such a young age."

Seems like Dermott has a short memory then. Seems like it's ok for him to write articles questioning other teams' champions' value to their club, despite them doing "everything possible to play good footy". Seems like he has no problem cutting down the odd tall poppy. Seems like when the boot's on the other foot he doesn't like it very much. Of course that's got nothing to do with him being a Hawthorn director does it?

"The double-standards of some members of the media are questionable."

Have a look in the mirror Derm. It's hypocrisy in the extreme to complain on one hand about the treatment of his clubs players by the media whilst on the other dishing it out to other clubs players as a so-called journalist.

At least he got one bit right. I wouldn't swap ONE Damien Peverill for Trent Croad, let alone two. :D

Methinks Dermie has a Crush!

Love the way Dermie tipped Collingwood for the wooden spoon, cause it is in his interest to see the other club which has completed rebuilding via a youth policy to fail, particularly when it becomes more evident that he is associated with the wrong club!!!

If Dermie tries to tell us how "hard & tough" Croad is, I'll vomit. He has one of the weakest attacks on the ball in the league.

Chris Tarrant on the other hand...

Well said fig...the problem is there are so many losers at the moment, collingwood have embarrased the so called experts in our game at present and including some very ordinary tipsters on this board with there exciting brand of football and because of the young age of collingwood as a whole this exciting combination will be around for a long long time to come.

Brereton has become a whinging old mole and to be honest i told myself ages ago not to be annoyed by him.

FIGJAM - I've already voted for Johnnie!!! :)

Associated with the wrong club? What are you talking about? The Hawks are 8-3 and 3rd on the ladder...I don't see how that is a failure, and I don't see what that has to do with the Croad article.

However, I think Dermie maybe should keep quiet as all he has done is drag the Croad article back into the spotlight. The fact is most of the comments that portrayed Trent in such a bad light were made by Dermie himself, not by Croad.

That is exactly right. I couldn't believe it this morning when I read the drivel that Brereton wrote. All this crap in the original article of being a hard man set Croad up for a fall, which he beautifully delivered on about 8 hours after the article was published.

The real problem of the original article is the publicity that Croad gets in relation to his output so far. This is the result of people like Brereton pumping up Croad and his ilk. Croad did come off as a big head, but that is not entirely his fault.

GH, I'm a Collingwood supporter. It's in my nature to make bold and often stupid statements. Sometimes we feel hard done by even if we are not...

...however, there are undoubtedly two blokes in the media that genuinely have an interest (and really do nothing to hide it) in seeing Collingwood fail. Dermie, who was courted by Eddie, but chose to stay with Hawthorn. And Tony Shaw, who still thinks we should have kept him and Luke Godden, Brad Fuller, Stephen Patterson, Mark Orchard, Jason Wild etc. etc.

Anyway, sorry to relate this to our club, but I was just trying to say that Dermie being critical of the media cutting down the tall poppies, is hypocritical.

I have voted for Johnnie 5 times today (from work of course) and I might just do this everyday for the rest of the week!

It seems that to get by a footy player has to be like a farmer - cry the poor tale and keep your Beamers etc out of sight.

But Hawthorn seems to be copping it both ways at the moment - 'tall poppies' and 'losers' at the same time.

I liked Croady's response to the 'pretty boys' tag. Rather than try to deny it he said "OK, so how do they feel being beaten by a bunch of pretty boys ?"

How do you feel magpies ?

Perhaps the true explaination is that, like many more football players with indifferent form, an interrupted pre-season.

And you guys who PAY to vote on big brother are just showing how stupid you are. Indirectly all that money is going to people like Dermie

This seems to have been sidetracked. I wasn't commenting the article itself, or Croad, but rather Brereton's arrant hypocrisy in complaining about Croad's treatment at the hands of the media given his own past behaviour.

And for the uninformed...Dave is referring to Dermie's article a couple of years ago...questioning Hird's worth to the Essendon side. Especially after he (Hird) was trying everything to get back on the paddock and play good footy.

That article oozes hypocracy. But i guess it's easier to throw stones at others, than one of his own.

Dave I agree, Dermie is one of the ultimate tall poppy harvesters!

Pessimistic, how do we feel losing by 4 points against a full strength Hawthorn without Damian Adkins, Nick Davis, James Clement and Scott Burns??? Indifferent.

Nick Davis had next to no pre-season, played in the Ansett Cup, did his knee, came back six weeks later and is, in my opinion, in our top six or seven players and is just hitting his straps. Don't use a mildly interrupted pre-season as an excuse for this overrated footballer!!!

As for Big Brother, you don't have to be stupid to watch and enjoy trash TV. The only time I have been passionate enough to phone in (from my work phone) is to vote a person off of my television that I can't bloody stand. I think stupidity is not being able to spell or correctly type the name of the city in which you live! Look at yourself before you make generalisations or assumptions on the intelligence of people on this board!!!

They don't call me the R&BA for nothing Bubba! Seriously though, it's the hypocrisy that pisses me off. Derm passes himself off as a journo yet never writes critical articles about Hawthorn players (that I can remember anyway). If he's so upset about the treatement Croad's copped I expect we wont see any more of the type that he so often serves up.

I didn't mind Derm's article on Hird, after all it's his right to raise topics he considers worthy. What really pissed me off that week was the smug tone in his voice after Hird tore a hammie against WC. Being happy at another players injury is something I wont forget, or forgive.

It comes back to the whole conflict of interest thing. Of course Dermie won't write a bad article about a Hawthorn player when he is a director of the club! It's like expecting Eddie to write an article saying something like "Buckley doesn't captain well" or "Collingwood supporters don't spend enough money on the club". (Before all the Magpie supporters bite my head off, I'm not saying that's true, just giving an example)

Anyone who is directly involved with a club at board level shouldn't really have a prominent position in the media, it just leads to bias and hypocricy.

Hear hear.

Dermie's Hawthorn bias is just so obvious in this case.

Now he stupidly goes and brings it up again so everyone can talk about it a bit more. Croad must be really thanking him

All young players would be well advised to give nothing personal away to the media, because rightly or wrongly they're going to get torn to bits.

Nah seriously Bubba, Dermott is entitled to his opinion, which is fair enough. But the tone of the article is aimed at those in the media (re: Hun) who have been somewhat hypocritical. I don't mind the essence of his article...he is coming into bat to protect the image of one of 'his' players. Fair enough.

But what I didn't like was the first four words of his opening paragraph:
I don't like hypocrites....

He has a history of being one himself. I'm with GoaldenHawk on this one. Something really has to be done about the obvious conflicts of interest happening in footy. I know that they don't break any laws and the individuals have every right to be successful...but not at the expense of football. I have never seen Dermie cast stones at any Hawthorn player, nor Eddie break any story about "Unrest at Collingwood" (for example, although if there was I'm sure you wouldn't find him breaking the story on TFS).

Something has to be done, but unfortunately I don't see the AFL intervening.

Bit hard for the AFL to intervene considering the amount of conflicts of interest they have at the moment (ie Samuel and Spotless, 7 and Colonial, AFL and Colonial, Ross Oakley and Colonial....sure there are dozens more I've forgotten or we are unaware of)

:(

"If you give me six lines written by the most honest man, I will find something in them to hang him."

Well, you have certainly hung Dermie!!

Btw i sorta kinda agree with you Dave, the only thing is imho every journo is a hypocrite, its part of the job! ;

Aha ! a bite ! I'll get on the next 'who is the worst pain in bigfooty' poll yet !

And I'm not stupid, Just ignorant.

And I used the word 'explaination', not 'excuse'.

But I do see this sort of article as the thin end of the wedge that seems to be being driven between players and fans. How many peple took up the tone of that article and decided not to buy a membership after all - perhaps they don't need it that much.

PS my employer must be smarter than yours, they have a 'block' on ringing numbers like big brothers. And I do watch it - you need to know the facts when you are slagging it off. But spend money on them ? Pleeeze.

Grendel, LOL! I wondered how long it'd be 'til I got a comment on that! He sorta hung himself too if you ask me :) Every journo? Geez there's one I know who'll be a tad pissed at that, though I suppose they all support one team or another so maybe that's fair comment.

It just pissed me off to see him whinging about something he did himself, particularly given the other circumstances surrounding his article and how he big noted himself afterwards.

Anyway, I've vented my spleen now, and I think it can be fairly comprehensively said that the player he questioned most certainly has been good value to his team :D

Dermie

1. I agree with Dave's conclusions in regard to the article.

2. As a further point, I sympathise with players who, through no fault of their own, have their ability called into question because they are unable to meet the expectations placed on them by the outsiders. Trent Croad is one of those player. He may one day be an excellent footballer, but has yet to produce anything on the football field that suggests he is worthy of Brereton's lofty statements.

Cheers.

since day 1 i have asked what is the fuss made over croad for,the single most over rated footballer in the game.the greatest laugh he has provided me was when brereton picked him for the irish series played in oz,absolutely embarassing.
I`ve watched him closely 4 times this year v coll,v freo ,v ess,v geel, ordinary in all 4...will brereton ever come out and say ..."ahhh i may have stuffed up on my croad valuation here"...i don`t think so,there is more hope of him shutting up for 2 minutes on friday night football, talks complete drivel.

Because Eddie's got his fingers in more pies.

Because Eddie has a higher profile than Derm.

Because Eddie pushs Collingwood down everyone's throat (yuk!) at every opportunity, more san Derm does with Hawthorn.
