Thought it was the fact that most of their players were killed in World War II? Kind of a shitty way for a club to go out.

They were rubbish because a) they were strictly amateur and didn't rort the payments like everyone else did and b) had a recruitment policy which meant you either had to be a student or a university graduate to play for them.

This meant they'd won two games in four years even before WW1 kicked off (http://stats.rleague.com/afl/teams/university/season.html), but when that started and half their list enrolled in the army they were sunk for good. Some sources claim we merged with them but it was more a case of stealing their best players on route to our first finals appearance in more than a decade (http://demonwiki.org/university)

I'll stand corrected but I think University Blacks/University Blues are the historical successors of the VFL club.
