Some of my fave cult directors are:

John carpenter (escape from new York, the thing, they live are my faves)
Paul verhoven
Nicolas winding refn (Bronson, drive, the pusher series)
Michael Winterbottom (24 Hour Party People, Tristam Shandy, the trip - although the tv series is better than the truncated film version).

Specific films:
Evil dead trilogy
Mad max 1 and 2
American psycho
Repo man
Hard target (and john woos Hong kong films)
Lost boys

Hard to think of tarantino, ridley scott and david lynch as cult directors now but early in their careers I think their films were considered cult films.

Coincidentally was watching a flick on sbs world movies the other day and they played an old Des Mangan introduction from the 90s when he used to host cult classics on Saturday nights.
Got a flashback of teen me tuning into sbs to see some boobs and instead getting a movie education (plus some boobs on the odd occasion... hello erotic ghost stories).

Found a list of the flicks he curated on letterboxd (dont think its definitive but a good go at it):

Edit: another list with some additional flicks

Escape from New York, the Thing are ace. Love Winterbottoms films

No worries! I could go on for days lol, I love watching these sorts of films too! Mainly horror, old westerns and sci fi/neo noir.
Sbs aired this doco series a few years back. Was a lot of fun:

Its actually hard to think of what defines a cult film nowadays because of how easy they are to find with streaming /letterboxd etc. Like I started looking up lists of top cult films after reading your post and a lot listed rocky horror, pulp fiction and bladerunner but theyre all such a big part of popular culture now that I dont think of them as cult films.

vanishing point (1971) - car chase movie, with themes of freedom, rebellion against authority, and counter culture

Johnny got his Gun - Metallica based their song 'One' off of this. But good movie in its own right

John Doe Vigilante (2014) - Aussie Made.. An ordinary man fights violence the only way he knows how - by killing one criminal at a time. Hero or villain? Justice or vengeance?

Came here to say Escape from New York

To Kill a Mockingbird
Rear Window
Blade Runner
The Matrix
Speed
Running Man
Minority Report
Bourne Identity
Robocop
T1 and 2
Wedlock
Falling Down
Dark City

While some of these are niche, they are still in my mind cult classics from people who appreciate particular genres, or actors.

I was thinking about my cult favorite actors

Tom Hiddleston
Steve Buscemi
Nick Cage
Winona Ryder
Keanu Reeves
Tilda Swinton
Jeff Golblum
Christopher Walken
Gary Oldman
Tim Robbins

not sure some of those qualify as cult classics? eg. The Matrix, T2 and Bourne Identity

ARe cults supposed to be niche?

I think The Room and Garbage Day qualify. Both have strong fan appreciation.

ARe cults supposed to be niche?
A little

They are movies that survive despite the limitations at the box office - either made out of time ie a sleeper or a genre changing movie like Rocky Horror and Porkys say

Mainstream blockbuster movies hit immediately
