In his 'glorious' career with Essendon, Micky Symons developed a 'cult following' among our section of the faithful. His marks, dashing runs out of defence and last but not least that classical kicking style won't be forgotten. Micky was more than a footballer, he was an 'entertainer'. Gave us many a laugh at the footy. Any of yers got any 'cult heroes' at your club? Who are they?

Shayne Stevenson

Brightned up a dull day in 1995 by kicking a goal witha fractured ankle (or was it a strain and he fractured it kicking the goal)

(Everyone was injured that day, including Piggy and Dutchy which meant the Hawks finished the season with 7 straight losses after that win)

With the retirement of Birdman Evans and Scotty Turner I think we are fresh out of cult heroes!

Then again Royce Vardy does show some promise! When offered a chance to take a number lower than his previous 42 he jumped at the chance to take the recently vacated 41 of Scott Turner! Said something about what the number 41 meant to Richmond's defence!

Birdman retired? wasn't a bad player from what i saw of him. 'Spose Scotty Turner's legend grew after his crunching of Gary O'Donnell in the '95 Elim. Final. Changed the game for ya's that day.

The cult of Johhny Barker is alive and breeding down Glenferrie way.
Coxys skull crew seems to have had its day though.

Old time cult heroes were Punkahead Paul Dear and of course the never going to make it but we loved em anyway reserves blokes. All clubs had them, you know, dominant in the ressies, useless in the seniors. Dave the 'bicep' Sullivan,Rudi Mandemaker, Big Dom Berry were a few from past Hawk days.

I can remember Dave 'the bicep' as you call him Sullivan playing a handful of games for us in the late '80's. Did he get any senior action with you blokes? Made the number 19 guernsey his own 'til another cult figure of ours took it over. His name was Peter Somerville.

As for the 'dominant ressies but useless senior' players, yeah, we had a few.
Brad Fox, Ed Considine, Adrian Burns and Brian Winton are a few off the top of my head. Enrico Misso? never played any senior footy with us, but with a name like that he had to be included. I seem to recall him going to another club after his stellar career with our 2's. Think it was St.Kilda or Hawthorn not really sure.

What exactly makes a player a cult hero? Does it mean that they are loved only by a minority of a teams' fans?

In season 1999, they were dubbing Scotty Cummings a cult hero. I never really understood why. That season, he was kicking a heap of goals, and the way I saw it, all the Eagles fans were loving him. Would that therefore negate his "cult hero" status?

In the words of the red haired bigot....

The way i see it it's a player's ability (or lack of) or just a deficincey in his game which makes a cult figure/hero. As mentioned, we loved Micky Symons for his terrible kicking. Never knew where the ball would go once he got hold of it. Sometimes a player may have an unusual name (Ilija Grgic anyone?) which is also a qualification for 'cult hero' status.

I guess Karl Langdon is a cult hero at the Eagles for his famous blonde hair and his flamboyant playing style. His cult status has continued with his regular half time MC duties in the golden suit

I think Richmond 'retired' him! Let's face it, despite our well documented run with injuries he still strugled to get a game last season - it was no great surprise to see him go!

Also, when Justin Plapp was a Supplemetary player in Richmond Reserves he had developed quite a cult following. The following year he was promoted but couldn't quite cut it at the senior level. Now he is off struggling at St. Kilda.
