What's selfish about it? He was injured in the field on day 1 of the 5th Test. It's not like someone else could have played instead of him.

Because when you hate a guy but he has an exceptional record and consistently wins stuff you have to invent reasons he’s not good.

I hate to admit it to myself, as I am a huge Pat Cummins fan (and have defended/lauded him in this very thread) BUT he has been woefully out of form for the best part of 2023.

Overburdened? Carrying niggles? Personal issues?

He just isn't the same bowler; the venom has disappeared.

What's become of his short ball?

A couple of years ago he had a brutal short ball, and despite the heroic good looks and gentlemanly demeanour he was not afraid to really play the enforcer role for Australia. He'd come on 1st change, keep it tight and get stuck into the batsmen with regular vicious short deliveries.

He's bowled some good spells here and there this year (not as many as he'd have liked I'm sure) but that nastiness has disappeared; that short ball has been either used too sparingly or been ineffectual when he has deployed it.

I'm pretty sure I said somewhere in this thread that he has been my favourite Aussie cricketer since AB and Warne, and I hope he can find his best form again - but I have a feeling Pat Cummins has well and truly peaked.

I don’t like having the same test and white ball captain. It’s just too much to ask of one player.

He looks tired and who could blame him, we’ve had a jam packed year of huge tests, and now he’s in a World Cup.

Meanwhile the South Africans would have had this as their man priority since they left Australia.

Definitely overburdened.

Patty quotes concerning Cam Green and the potential for burn-out re-emerged in the media over the past day or two; could very much apply to Pat himself at present.

The question is: can he rediscover his best form?

I hope you're right; I have absolutely loved watching him at his best.

And I completely acknowledge that cricketers can't be ''up'' for every match, every series, every tournament.

But he has looked closer to pedestrian than I ever thought I'd see since Sth Africa toured in the new year.

Yep, agreed, needs to just take some down time and reevaluate how he can have the most impact, because at this best he's one of the best bowlers in the world.

I think it's fine to continue as test captain and he's still probably our third best 50-over quick but looking at Australian cricket as a whole, we're probably going to get more out of him if he sits out the 50-over stuff.

Yeah, but it is a world cup after all.

Geez if Kumar gives Stokes out LBW to Boland, we win ashes, Cummins rests one or even two tests....n

Ooo yeah for sure and you want your big guns on deck. Probably a lesson for the next world cup but Cummins will be 34... it might be a bit late for him but the same lesson might apply to another quick.

I think both Australia and England have a legit query as to whether the world cup could be moved a bit further from Ashes tours.

We're due for a pretty big refresh in our top teams. A lot of lads getting to the end of their careers.

There is enough bowling talent around but batting talent is thin on the ground.
 
Too much niceness on this thread. He's a f**king horrible captain in any form of cricket. Great bowler at least in the test arena. 50 overs questionable.

An absolute ****ing grind of a year and him and McDonald have pulled them through.

Big **** you to everyone who reckons he’s not “hard enough” and needs Langer’s style.
 
Well I queried the great man’s general 2023 form upthread just before he turned it around - never been more pleased to be wrong.

I was fortunate enough to watch a lot of this WC and you could just see Cummins slowly work out his best approach to bowling in Indian ODIs.

The slower off-cutting bouncer became a huge run-saving weapon, and Patty was good enough to vary his pace ball-by-ball without losing control. When he cranked it up he produced some of the faster deliveries I’ve seen him bowl, hitting the 145kph mark at times.

Couple his great bowling comeback with his ever-improving captaincy, some crucial contributions with the bat and sharp fielding and you have a Captain equal to the toughest challenges cricket has to offer.

His leadership and class in removing Virat in the Final says it all about Pat.

Respect.
