Cummins Overrated?

Shane Bond though? Come on mate give up some kudos for Bondy
His spell against Australia in the 2003 World Cup was one of the best you'll ever see: lucky for us that he could only bowl 10 overs.

Pretty much every match excluding his debut prior to mid 2018

For a long time he struggled to take more than a couple of wickets an innings
Cummins didn't take many big hauls early in his career but the flip side to that was he always contributing and that pattern is still continuing. 4 wickets in a match on 24 of his 33 tests - 72%. It is early in his career and that number may plateau out, but for modern comparison McGrath took 4 wickets in a match in 77 out of 124 tests (62%) and Steyn 60 of 93 (64%).

His wicket taking rate is great now, I was really only talking about that first 12 or so months after he came back from injury

He was a bit underwhelming in 2017/early 2018, then really hit his stride in South Africa and never looked back

Cummins has to be the greatest fast bowler since Dale Steyn. He might surpass McGrath if he keeps up his fitness, he seems very durable too.

Think that's Rabada mate, a couple of years younger than Cummins as well. :openmouth:
Needs to improve that average of 30 away from South Africa if he wants to be considered in those echelons. I'd be backing him in to do it to be fair.

Being a bowler he just can’t do it without a nimble and voracious second hand man…don’t care what all the
specialists say…not even Nathan Lyon can do it…rumble you gently

I know i say this every time but why do our flat conditions mean our batsman get rated down but our bowlers don't then get rated higher?

rabada consistently gets more helpful conditions to bowl in than cummins as do the English and nz quicks and if they dont then that means aussie batsmen dont get more helpful conditions to bat in you can't have it both ways.

Cummins was lucky yesterday, gifted wickets off some very loose bowling. If he doesn't take 7 or 8 in the second innings I wouldn't mind seeing Siddle back in the whites for the second test. Smith can take over the captaincy, Warner the VC. ;)
Needs a ton as well to survive imo.

This would have to be the biggest backfire thread in BF history.
I agree with the OP, Cummins was overrated at the time this thread was posted

Was producing worse figures than both Starc and Hazlewood but people were talking about him like he was our best bowler

The fact he kicked on to be great doesn't change that
