Simpkin had injury problems a lot through 2013.bit confused about Simpkin.
A couple of yrs ago i thought he was developing nicely , and i was pretty excited about Maxy taking him under his wing. Then this yr when we needed defenders he couldnt get a game?
I knew he had some injuries early, but were they really season wrecking injuries or did Watters just not rate him??
Curren HOORAY!!!!!!
Jones MEH!

Why does it? Gwilt and Gilbo are different players then Simpkin, i wouldn't class them all similar personally.Happy with TC and Jones in particular, but was surprised Simpkin got two years, after spending most of this year in the VFL. Strongly suggests that the likes of Gwilt and Gilbo are on the trade table and looking like going, along with Fisher. Like Simpkin though and hope he makes the most of it.
Dempster is 30 next season nearing the end, Geary could push into the midfield same as Gilbert, Stanley should be playing forward, Webster could see more in the midfield, Siposs isn't a defender is another forward same as Murdoch, on Murdoch i think he is more a HF/MidIf we get say Bruce and Delaney, with the aim of them playing most weeks, plus Dempster, Geary and Roberton, who I see as being best 22 and "musts" going forward, that is already 5 spots in the back 6 taken up. One spot remaining for the likes of Gwilt, Gilbert, Simpkin, Stanley, Wright, Murdoch, Webster, Siposs, etc, plus Fisher, if he happens to stay. That's as many as 8+ fighting for one spot.
I just don't think we'd have signed Tom up for two years if we weren't planning on clearing some serious space for him. Just my humble o.
I think Ray deserved 2, i do agree though on everything else you said. Absolutely no idea why we would give Milera a 2yr deal and Maister only signed for 2014 didn't he?I would have given Curren 3 and Tommy Simpkin and Clint Jones 1 each (along with 1 each for Ray, Milera and Maister). You get safety and a long term contract when you deserve it (maybe a bit early on Curren and maybe Ray deserves 2).
Not overly happy with how re-signings have been done, but the powers that be surely know more than me.
I don't see why Dempster is much closer to "the end" than say Dal and Joey, who I think have at least 3 very good years in them and with his leadership and so on I think he is the reason we're willing to let Fisher go, so I see him being integral back there for at least two more years, all things being equal, to lead the way. I don't see Simpkin sticking around in the VFL until he retires!Dempster is 30 next season nearing the end, Geary could push into the midfield same as Gilbert, Stanley should be playing forward, Webster could see more in the midfield, Siposs isn't a defender is another forward same as Murdoch, on Murdoch i think he is more a HF/Mid
Fisher i think is gone, i agree on that.
I'd have Gilbert and Gwilt ahead of Simpkin any day and i like Simpkin.
Clinton Jones? Nice to see the club have such a strong stance on culture.
I have pretty much no doubt at all that both Jimmy and Sam would be on the trade table (with the club hoping to trade at least one of them), especially having seen that we've given Simpkin a two year deal. Given his poor last couple of years there may not be sufficient interest in Gwilt for it to be worth us trading him though, so Gilbo may be the one to go, as much as I'd be sad to see him go.Ok Gwilt and Gilbert will be traded.
But being serious we all don't agree with everything and that's my view at the moment.![]()

There may not be room for Stanley forward if we are playing all of Roo, Lee and one of Hickey/Mac and then we'd also likely be very keen to get games into White, making it 4 "talls" up there already, before we even get to Maister, who was in our best team until his injury this year.
"Siposs is not a defender". I hear this a lot on here, "oh Siposs didn't work out down back", but the fact is that he has played 3 full AFL games down back and was very good in all of them, so I'm not sure where anyone is getting those ideas from.
His two games across HB in the last two rounds last year were terrific for someone his age and then he was also perfectly good in R1 this year across HB against GC, having from memory 12 possies to half time, before fading out of it (like almost all our team did in that game, with over half of them cramping in the 2nd half), to finish with 19 possies, 7 marks and a goal. So in his 3 full games down back he averaged 19.7 possessions and 7 marks, and he took 3 contested marks and kicked two goals in the 3 games. (To put that into some perspective, Dylan Roberton averaged 17 possies, 4.7 marks and kicked a total of two goals (from 20 games) for us this year, playing a similar role and he's a couple of years older than Arryn and well used to playing down back.)
The wheels started to fall off from the following week (half of which he spent on the wing, until being subbed off mid-way through the 3rd quarter) though, but I think it's extremely safe to say that was due to some sort of injury (most likely the groin that tbarker has suggested several times) and not due to some sort of sudden inability to play across HB. From that point on he was poor whether he was playing forward, midfield or in defence, so I think it's a very safe bet that he had something physical impeding him.
As for those you've suggested for the midfield, we're already likely to have Steven, one of Dal/Joey, Armo, Hayes, Jones, Curren, Ross, Newnes (who I didn't mention, but could also play down back) and Ray playing there most weeks, so there probably won't be room for too many others and the next priorities in there would be the likes of Saunders, hopefully Minchington, Webster (as you suggested) plus all the "mids" we look like drafting this year.
Whichever way you cut it, if we add say Bruce and Delaney, at least one of the other "tweener" options will likely need to be traded for there to be any chance of Simpkin squeezing into our best 22, especially with it being likely that we'll be very keen to get a lot of games into Wright, Webster and Murdoch (who I think would be ideal across HB, in the role Gwilt probably ought to be playing).
As bad as we were this year, there just aren't that many spots available in our current best 22.
so do we only keep players who will make our best 22?
I don't buy your argument re Simpkin. Your assumptions are based on a flat earth approach. What happens if we get injuries? I'd say Simpkin has shown more than Sipposs for example. Hard at it maturing body.
Players like Sippos, Saunders, Mich etc are yet to prove anything nor establish themselves. What if 2 or 3 of them go backwards?
The same culture will see us post a loss this year and probably a bigger loss next year. We cannot afford to keep losing money due to the morons we have playing. In any case, apparently the deal was done before the incident. One of many players stuffing around with fire this year.
Singled out as the man who happened to light the dwarf.
A player with fantastic work ethics
A player who has done one thing wrong in 7 years.
Stuff your culture.
No and I don't see anyone having suggested that, but I would think it was pretty unusual to give a two year contract to someone that you don't think will be in your best 22 and who is not 18 or 19yo, or a major "project player" like a Tommy Walsh, hence my feeling that this means that it is quite likely that at least one of Gwilt and Gilbert will be gone, as well as Fisher. Otherwise, I would have thought he'd probably have gotten a 1 year deal. I'm not suggesting that we shouldn't have kept him on. I certainly would have and am glad that we have, as I like him and think he's well worth keeping, even if only just for depth.so do we only keep players who will make our best 22?
I would say the same about Tom.Players like Sippos, Saunders, Mich etc are yet to prove anything nor establish themselves.
Then we deal with it if and when it happens. Chances are two or three of them will (and there's nothing guaranteeing that Tom couldn't be one of those to go backwards, as he did this year) but the fact is that the club will almost certainly be extremely keen to get as many games into the likes of Curren, Wright, Webster, Newnes, Siposs, Murdoch, Saunders, Markworth, White, etc as they can (all things being equal), like they did with Newnes this year, for example, plus whoever we draft with our highest picks in November, like we did with Wright, Saunders and Murdoch this year, so it's going to mean there is likely to be a very tight squeeze on for spots and only those that the club see as being a significant part of our next premiership contending side are likely to be playing regularly, plus the older ones that we keep in there to lead the way and provide the leadership and so on, IMHO.What if 2 or 3 of them go backwards?
The same culture will see us post a loss this year and probably a bigger loss next year. We cannot afford to keep losing money due to the morons we have playing. In any case, apparently the deal was done before the incident.
Just noticed in the Holmes video that the one guy still hanging out at Linen House's gym is, you guessed it... Tom Curren.![]()
