Squiggle tips Demons at 77% chance -- What's your tip? -- Team line-ups »
An interesting and well written post. Good work mateMaroon seems to be a cursed colour in VFA/VFL jumpers.
Melbourne City played in the VFA for two seasons in 1912 & 1913, and gained infamy for not winning a single match in their short tenure, all 36 games played by this team were losses. Melbourne City wore maroon and white jumpers.
The Brighton Penguins wore maroon and gold jumpers, and they certainly weren't cursed when Brighton performed strongly in the years after World War 2, winning the 1948 VFA premiership. But after narrowly missing the 1951 finals, Brighton slumped to last the following year, and never ventured far from the bottom of the ladder during the rest of the 1950s as the VFA expanded more and more, with more wooden spoons in 1953, 1955, 1957 & 1958. They ran second last in 1959 & 1960, before the split into two divisions from 1961 onwards. Brighton were obviously put into Division 2 and should have been able to consolidate away from powerful teams like Sandringham, Williamstown, Moorabbin and Oakleigh, but the Penguins went 0-18 in 1961 with a percentage of just 29, one of the poorest seasons on record. Brighton ran last again in 1962 and 1963, improved to make the finals in 1964, but that was the last VFA season for the Penguins. Playing under the name Brighton-Caulfield for the past three years, they were replaced by the Caulfield Bears from 1965 onwards, the Bears wearing royal blue and white jumpers.
No VFA teams wore maroon jumpers for 32 years, until 1996 by which time the VFA had become the VFL, and were keen to add country teams to the 9 remaining VFA teams. Two powerful country teams were added, the North Ballarat Roosters in black and white, and the Traralgon Maroons which appropriately wore maroon and white. North Ballarat did well in their new league, but Traralgon stumbled from the start, running last 1-17 in 1996 and second last with 3-14-1 in 1997 before leaving the VFL at season's end. No Gippsland team has ever taken their place, and they are now a forgotten team more than two decades later.
Your club won zero premierships with the previous monogram but won numerous with the classic.Question, is it worth mentioning any Carlton with the new "old" monogram as cursed?
At least with the modern monogram we won finals and were a couple of wins away from the Grand Final.
This is all the fans' fault for voting it back in (including myself). Sorry blue boys.
Well I meant the new reincarnation of it, but I do get your point.Your club won zero premierships with the previous monogram but won numerous with the classic.
Traralgon has been very strong in the Gippsland League though, most flags out of all teams and regularly winning flags at all levels. Pretty sure they have won at least 1 premiership every year in at least 1 grade out of 4.Maroon seems to be a cursed colour in VFA/VFL jumpers.
