it is my first and only language been a while since school and the fact my job does not have me writing essays etc etc means that i have slightly lost the knack of the ,,,,,,,,,,'''''''''''' etc etc. When i do try and use them i still get abused ! DAMMED IF I DO DAMMED IF I DON'T !

Although, if were being pedantic, you wouldn't use the abbreviation, "etc". When writing formally you should always use, "et cetera". ;)

However, as I've argued earlier, it's an internet forum, as long as your posts are readable, then never mind what the grammar and spelling nazis think. :p

Depends on the extent of the formality. For instance, would "don't" or "won't" be acceptable in that post?

Agreed.

As far as I was aware a comma is not needed before saying 'and'.

It's one of those ambiguous commas. I tend to err on the side of putting them in; others on the side of leaving them out.

Another example of the ease of the English language.

To be fair Writing skills need practice.

There are several aspects to writing and the secret is to try and read it from how your audition will see it.

Actually a great place to learn are Internet forums, a good idea is to identify the more credible posters and you will see how they use of words makes a point quite often what they say isn't what give them credibility but how they write it for there could be 20 posts in a thread but there will be a stand out.

Now a question for Hawkes Heroes pick the error with the above paragraph.

now seeing i am totally out of practice , did my change of a word and placement of the comma hit the right spot or did i stuff it up totally , out of interest .

The error is the large paragraph is way too long! as for the second one I'm not aware of one, but to answer question I'm not one who obesses over commonas but the lenght of paragraphs is a bugbear.

sorry about length if i get onto writing a reply i look at the keyboard and type like mad , hence the length and no comma's .

That's okay, I wasn't looking at the lenght of your paragraphs, I was making a general comment about writing.

For if the lenght of the paragraph is short it enables you to get away without needing as many commas as other wise would be the case.

I know my grammer sometimes goes out the window for I write like I read and I read quick and sometimes I don't fully read what I have written.

Should be 'their' & 'gives', plus the numerous comma's not there and the length of the sentence.
