I prefer to look at it from an evolutionary point of view. The male (the people described are almost exclusively young males) are looking for a mate.

The car is the extension of the male designed to attract attention (think peacock).

a mate of mine had the same sort of issues with speeding, what he did was quite funny but worked.

For an hour each night for 2 weeks got out his camera with a flash and set it off everytime a car went by that looked quick. It got around that there was a new speed camera on his street and now most people do about 50

I personally cant see the point.

I have a sibling that has lost 10 demerit points while on P's, gone through a number of sets of tyres and heaps of fuel a week driving around a town of about 5000 people. I really cant see the point...

Amazingly I found out the reason they do this. Some females actually find it hugely attractive. I have meet one of them. Seriously, I know a woman that wets her pants when she hears a big V8 rev loudly or a squealing take off. I didn't think it was possible but these desperate females actually exist.

The driver is usually a backward cap wearing pimply nerd who thinks he's hardcore with his rap music(youcan't spell crap without rap) rattling every panel of his $1200 shitbox.
90% of the idiot drivers I cross are of this demographic.
