Just finished reading this thread from start to finito. Have to say there were some douchebag anti-cycling (and generally anti-reason) posters when the thread was kicking in 2010.

I don't know exactly when "liking" a post came into play on BF, but I'd reckon it's been around for 5 years or so. With that in mind, (and no names mentioned), when you have posted 13,000 times and have only 22 likes, that to me is a major indicator of douchebaggery in my book.
Well you get barely 10 likes a year over 7 years, yourself..:D

Don't really see how that will change anything - How often would a cop witness a car overtake a bicycle and then how would they be able to deduce if it was a metre or not?...

99% of drivers are good at giving cyclists enough space - only been a handful of times that I felt they have gotten too close to me... and guess what, there weren't any cops around on those handful of times to judge whether they were closer than a metre...

Seems a bit silly, really...

Yeah I don't think the law is all that practiceable, however if it gets drivers and cyclists thinking more about their behaviour on the road it will have done it's job IMO.

I was originally very sceptical of the law but the experience in QLD is that it has improved driver behaviour significantly and it is also easier to enforce a specified distance than the "safe distance" in the current rules. You cycle in pretty cycle friendly areas in low speed streets so your experiences will differ to cyclists riding on higher speed and busier roads.
The biggest factor for the improvement is, imo, the set distance which is very easy to communicate rather than trying to explain to every moron behind the wheel what a safe distance means. I would say a majority of drivers across the country would understand the 1m/1.5m requirement now and it has only been law in one state so far.

(Un)fortunately the topic of cycling brings out the douchebags on whatever platform you're on - BF, facebook, real life.
