Cyclone Watch: How late is too late...

OPTION 1:
Round 14: Gold Coast hosts Essendon in round 14. (Essendon vs Geelong moves to round 16 where both clubs currently have a bye)

Round 15: Gold Coast hosts Melbourne in round 15 and GWS now have a bye in that round

Round 16: GWS host Gold Coast in round 16 and Melbourne has a bye (along with Brisbane)

Done. Fixed

I posted that first bit yesterday (GCvE ->14 and EvG ->16) as a solution, but I'm curious as to why the other changes would need to happen unless it's related to overall travel? Can't be venue related, there's only one game at the MCG in R16, and starting times aren't set either, so you just push the games around as needed.

The other option I've seen mentioned, swapping the GC and Ess home games wouldn't work because it would be too late to get the venues sorted. Of course if the AFL were proactive about this a couple of days ago, they might have been able to do that.

(and if both GC and Ess were out of finals and had to play that match in the pre-season bye - can you imagine just how uninteresting it would be)

I posted this a couple of posts earlier, but I'm just going to expand on it a bit.

Bombers and Suns don't get a mid-season bye, but our Bye is in round 4. Unfortunately, If our bye remains in round 4 and that round remains unchanged, then we aren't getting a mid-season bye. Otherwise that would mean ourselves and another club can only play 22 games instead of 23.

The only way we get a mid-season bye, is if we don't get a bye in round 4. Some might say, play Essendon and Hawthorn two times in 4 weeks (i.e play in round 4 where they both have a bye). That doesn't work because the Bombers and Hawks only meet once this year, so having them play twice would require a complete restructure of the entire fixture.

Option 2:

The only other option is to play it over the spare weekend before the finals.

If anyone can come up with any other option that actually works I'd like to hear them. I'm open to ideas.

I think option 1 is good. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
I rate Option 1. Good work figuring this out! I hope the AFL does it.

If Essendon play Gold Coast in round 14, then Gold Coast don't have a bye in that round as originally intended.

I'm still looking at it. There is something that doens't quite add up and it's doing my head in

You're right. I may have over-thought it. If Gold Coast host Essendon in round 14 and Geelong play Essendon in round 16, it works without fiddling with the other matches. Both GC and Ess wouldn't get mid-season byes

They're still not getting a bye - they'd be playing Ess (14), Melb (15), GWS (16) - and while you could theoretically push that last game to round 2, that would result in GWS having two byes mid season instead of the one in place of Idiot Round early in the season.

Just moving the one match (Ess v Geel) gets what you needed. The cost is two teams unfortunately missing the bye, but I can't see a simpler solution than that.

One of the pluses of all this is now we have four more matches where all teams are playing their opening match of the season in what the AFL stupidly calls Round 1 despite their being a round before it

[Edit: I see your last response now :thumbsu: - teach me not to rewrite things too much]

Yes Gold Coast's one bye would be in round 2 and Essendon's one bye would be in round 4.

Sorry for over-thinking it everybody.

Why can’t they just play in Melbourne this weekend and switch the Rd 17 game back to Gold Coast?

Gotta laugh at the syncophatic suck ups on SEN actually heaping praise on the AFL for their "timely decision".

"Well you could have gone to the airport tomorrow and find the flight was cancelled, how much better off are you now the AFL has made the call one day early! Stop your whinging!"

if you couldn't tell it was more than likely going to get cancelled you would have to be a moron, you don't need andrew Dillon to hold your hand and tell you don't come, the afl made the call at the exact right time

I really hate the kind of poster that thinks they know it all and everything deserves ridicule. You just seem like a sook. The Merseyside derby in the Premier League was postponed the day of the scheduled match due to a storm. Honestly, calling it off a couple of days out is a good move and gives everyone the chance to either reschedule flights or focus on the impending cyclone.

I doubt there is time to organise the logistics of a game at Docklands with this short notice.

Gold Coast would have to fly out of an airport in a cyclone.
I'd add that they'd be a bit thrown by having a cyclone go through, and that would make it quite hard to be ready for a game on the weekend.

And it's not as if once you're in the air, that's it. The weather conditions would be catastrophic for probably the first 20 minutes of the flight. I wouldn't want to be on that plane

I'm in the process if trying to get refunds for non-refundable flights and accomodation. Novotel surfers paradse were good enough to refund me $392, now what will Jetstar do?

You should be fine, depending on exact dates

Another disaster from the AFL. They need to scrap this self indulgent opening round garbage. Who cares about Queensland and New South Wales?
Empty grounds in Melbourne with fans having a long weekend. Pretty stupid not to moves games south.

Don't they realise the impact postponing the games has on superfooty planning

I mean, with near century high flooding likely would planes be able to return to Brisbane? Not to mention the anxiety of leaving loved ones and homes during a natural disaster to play a game in Melbourne and potentially be unable to return home for days.

Quite a lot of myopic and outright cold opinions in here. There's no way either QLD side should be playing anywhere this weekend. Period.

Attention Lions players… drop those sandbags immediately, kiss your families goodbye and catch a flight to Melbourne with the prospect of being stranded down there for days. Some weird nerd’s Superfooty score hangs in the balance! Go go go!
