Rumour D Mac

Tough crowd, he was fantastic that day and from what I recall was every bit as impressive as Sloane. In any case I'm not here to fly the flag for him. I think he's copped a bit more heat than he deserves at times but he's never been a world beater and certainly should have been in and out of the side a lot more over the years.

So why wasn’t he?

Rumour not true for two reasons: 1. We'd never let him go in a trillion billion years and 2. No other club would want him.
Wouldn't get past no1 - no way he's going anywhere. There's half a lifetime of assistant coaching roles yet to be taken up.

Maybe then off the Harvard.

Have a feeling that, after an extensive search, we will arrive at the conclusion the right man was here all along to fill a number of roles.

Never thought it would happen, but I’d expect DMac to be gone by the end of the year.

He’ll be wanting to maximise the value of his last big contract(s), and hopefully we see that our list profile means our salary cap dollars are better spent elsewhere. By which I mean attracting/retaining top end talent as well as younger players.

Surely one of Carlton/St Kilda/Brisbane/Gold Coast is looking for some experience and have more cap space than they know what to do with?

If the clubs you mention have plenty of cap space then wouldn’t they too try and get some big names rather than wasting on average players? Brisbane are getting their shit together so I expect them to trade hard EOY.

Sure, but depends on how many big fish they can land. All I’m saying is there may well be room for a medium fish, and for a club with an inexperienced list he may offer some value.

Mackay 25+ disposal games = 11/193.

2008 - 0
2009 - 5
2010 - 2
2011 - 1
2012 - 0
2013 - 1
2014 - 1
2015 - 0
2016 - 1
2017 - 0
2018 - 0

Rory Atkins 25+ disposal games = 16/66.

2015 - 0
2016 - 7
2017 - 6
2018 - 3

Bloody hell. What happened to Mackay after 2009?!

He was young then though; he should've continued to develop. Usually we are blood incredible at developing players but not with David.
Sometimes everything aligns for a player and they produce an outstanding season when they otherwise shouldn't have. The best players can back it up and Mackay has resoundingly proven he cannot.

Development can't really fix luck and playing well above your ability for a short period of time

Which really doesn't answer the question. Not your fault - it's just that the rule is written so badly that it's impossible to provide a correct answer. The only correct answer is "the AFL can & will do whatever the **** it wants".
Where in a particular year one or more Free Agent(s) under Rule 17.1(a) and/or Restricted Free Agent(s) move from a Club’s Playing List (the first mentioned Club) to the Playing List of one or more other Clubs pursuant to the operation of Rule 17.4 or 17.5, the first mentioned Club may be entitled to a compensatory selection(s) in the next occurring National Draft Selection Meeting as follows:
To date they've gone with "one compo pick per player lost" - but the AFL can pretty much do whatever they want, given the way the rule is written.

It gets really opaque when it comes to clubs which both gain & lose FAs in the same year - that comes under the next section:
any compensatory selection(s) shall be allocated in accordance with guidelines determined by the AFL;
Given that these "guidelines" aren't published, the AFL can pretty much do whatever it wants.

Yep. Don't they love a little wriggle room

That’s how they tend to set everything up isn’t it - Free agency compensation, father/son, rules of the game, draft sanctions, performance enhancing drugs policy...

It suits them perfectly, because they can just make it up on the fly.

Why are you laughing ?? lets revisit this conversation next year .
Kid is 19 and already averages 1.5 goals a game with nearly 3 tackles and has shown plenty .
Sydney seemed pretty rapt for him to extend his contract until the end 2020 .

You scoff at the thought of Paying WH that money when he will be 21 turning 22 and have 4 years of AFL footy behind him .
Sometimes you have to project to unlock true value and he is going to be a corker .
By 2021 , our forward will look quite different .. i want Hayward there next to Fogarty and hopefully McGovern

Your logic is so skewed. If he finished 11th every year of his career would that make him a poor and underperforming player?

Yes. There is nothing special about being 11th best. Especially when in the prime of his career.

Very similar career trajectory to van Berlo. Impressive start, lots of the ball.

Then became training track champion. Leader of the pack in all preseason running activities. Pride self on preparation rather than onfield performance (club enables this culture by glorifying training track stars).

Limited attention paid to improving own skills. More focus on the influence they can have on the whole playing group as mentor and becoming a leader at meetings, at training.

Individual game decays.
