Apologies if this seems an uneducated question but focusing primarily on this season what sort of impact can that have on Whitefriars as a club? Is it more of a long term situation and what are the perceived benefits for the clubs involved?

Too early to tell.

It certainly enables an ex-EFL club to remain as a viable on field entity, albeit in a different competition and within the rules of the VAFA.

Coaches will have scope to coach teams they may not have been able to field, and hopefully 20 - 25 players, who stuck fat whilst others deserted, will be able to stay with their club instead of trying to get a game elsewhere at a (former) rival club.

That's about it at this stage, anything else is mere speculation.

Ok cheers scribe.
It's always hard to tell the kind of impact that an agreement or partnership is going to have on a club. I know we are part of a collective group known as Football Williamstown which encompasses CYs, Willy VFL, Willy juniors as well as the super rules and FIDA teams. As far as I have seen this hasn't had a major impact apart from us becoming the first port of call for some of the fringe VFL development players who don't get a gig (although to my knowledge none of the VFL blokes have actually played a game) I think in our case it was more aimed at becoming more involved in the local community than anything else.
In any case it can't be bad news for the club

Long standing high grade suburban club has been courted by several VAFA clubs into a proposed alliance.

The winner comes from this grade.

Well down you.:thumbsu:

Donvale will not play in the Eastern Football League in 2014.

The Magpies will seek a merger with Whitefriars Old Collegians, who compete in the Victorian Amateur Football Association.

Donvale president Glenn Brindley said the club informed the EFL of its decision at a meeting on Thursday.

Got my intel from a former teammate who has a Donvale juniors connection - they are pushing this to ensure their juniors have somewhere to go after Colts.

Reading the article and looking at the transfers in/out if Donvale it looks like it would be mainly younger kids joining up with Whitefriars

There is still a few seniors floating about but the 19s that won the 2nd Division flag are the vast majority of the 'senior' players left. 1st year senior level players.

The obvious concern is that they are surrounded by numerous EFL clubs that will pick the eyes out of the promising juniors/colts in years to come. Same thing has happened to many of the better players that attended Whitefriars over the years - many playing in the EFL. Will be interesting to see what transpires into the future.

Will be good to see star Williamstown CYMS Veteran Will Cooper back fit and firing for the 2014 Season. The 2010 club Best and Fairest winner has missed the past two seasons with horrific injury's but is back on the track and proving that age is no boundary! He will be a recruit in itself for Williamstown if he can stay on the park. Good Luck to Will and his family in season 2014.

Whitefriars playing Ivanhoe this Sunday

There is a couple of important players gone down with injuries late in the preseason for the Friars. McDonald has broken his collar bone, Crowe hamstring and Hamblin groin, all three had big preseasons and were looking to have a big impact on the senior side in 2014. Particularly Mcdonald who was flying and back to his D1 team of the year form of 2012.

2x BnF Mattinson and Honest toiler L Kador will also be overseas for the first half of the season.

Hopefully won't be too slow of a start of Friars and a couple of the younger players can make the most of their opportunities.

Any other reports? Any Big Recruits? Willy hot favorites?

A few praccy matches taking place this weekend…

Therry Penola vs. Bulleen Temp
Old Mentonians vs. St Johns
Willy vs. Anglesea
Prahran intraclub

Will Jordan Bannister be playing many games for Therry this year?

Ok cheers scribe.

No major impact but for the 150 willy juniors who have joined the club over the past 4 years; the club now playing 2 games at Burbank Oval in 2015. Players doing pre season at Willy, Tom Johnstone at the Jets ... Not much though

Whitefriars snuck over the top of an undermanned mentone yesterday by 27 points.

I was very interested to see that mentone are sticking with their defensive Italian soccer team game plan. They look to have the speed, skill and height to be much more attacking, but seem hell bent on wasting their talent by throwing loose men back (even with the wind) and chipping it short along the boundary lines.

Interesting (IMO flawed) tactic and it's obvious the coach is reluctant to back his players obvious talent.

Just based on D2 last year boys, both Yarra Valley and Therry Penola should be competitive in D1.
YV got working well towards the end of last season knocking off TP late in the year and again in the semi, but the Lions won the Grand Final.
Would expect both sides have recruited well - reading in the paper TP have picked up some more midfield depth and two new key position players. As I said, NOBS were no match for them yesterday.

Any practice match results? Who are the teams to look out for?

Yarra valley took care of the friars pretty comfortably by 5 goals.

Pretty dissaponiting from the friars as we were at full strength (not to many ins to come) and only a week away from the season.

Yarra valley have good size and skill and will no doubt be a top 4 team this year. Their senior full forward who apparently broke his leg last year played twos and kicked about 10 as well.

They also have the hottest trainers in the vafa.

I heard Marshall Bunting is back again at melbourne High this year?

Is the bloke any good?

Was bloody good cricketer in the SECA (previously the CMCA). Quality all rounder and was Elwood captain a few years back. Think he might have won the “A’ grade medal. Didn’t even know he played footy!

Tips for This week?
I'll have a crack. Winners in Bold

Therry Penola vs Old Geelong
Old Mentonians vs Williamstown CYMS
NOBS
vs Prahran Assumption
Bulleen Templestowe vs Yarra Valley
Whitefriars vs MHSOB

Few good games, Willy vs Mentone always is a cracking game when they meet most years in round 1, I think NOBS vs Prahran will be interesting also.
Should be a cracking round 1
