Normally I'd agree with you Hoppers but I think he's been cleared to the Essendon District League!

So it is confirmed, thanks Wamba wasn't too sure. In that case i'll again be biased and go for a smokey in Ty Priest. Possibly a little ace up our sleeve this year once he is fully fit.

......and the Bears were just short against Aquinas too. So not bad pre-season from at Banyule Oldtimer. ;)

Glen Eira lost to East Brighton (SFL Division 1) by 6 goals. Had 8 of starting 22 out.

We play St Leos after easter, so that should give a better indication of where we are at.

OP'S beat Bentleigh by 10 goals
How close would you say Paradians were to full strength, if you know?
Clearly a few steps ahead of us (Bentleigh) today. We came out alright and won the first quarter but really got tired, maybe because we've been playing intra-club games mid week for the last few weeks due to today being our only real prac match!
Wondering how close OP were to full strength as we had last year's b&f, last year's GF best on ground and Robbo all missing today. Throw in our most experienced ruckman, a key position forward and best contested marking defender all missing and I don't think things look too bad for us.
Lots of kids out there today giving senior footy their first crack, as well as a few mid-age blokes who have come back to the club and are just picking it up again. Some blokes haven't trained much and really got found out today. Great lesson for one of last year's U19s coming up for his first season of seniors, played all day on Boundy who dominated.

For the 2s game.. great effort by Bentleigh with only a couple on the bench compared to OP having (just about) a whole other 22 to pick from on the sidelines!! Not sure of scores but I saw it as very even. A good contest with both sides playing to their strengths.. OP as the bigger/taller side kicking long to packs and Bentleigh running it, using pace and skills to advantage.
One last thing.. shocking ground to play on. The middle is actually a section of highway which is a disgrace and there are large rocks all over the ground wherever you go. I couldn't imagine OP players being happy with it and playing half your games there every year cannot be fun. I also heard someone saying it's against league rules to have your boundary line that close to the fence. You will be happy when you see our actual grassed football ground here at Arthur St.
Looking forward to some criticism as always..

Drybones, why is it everytime a team loses in pre-season they always point out the missing players they had. Being pre-season its very rare any team will play a full strength squad and as was the case for OP's yesterday. Yes our field is a disgrace at the moment and yes the players arent happy about the the expansion of plenty rd onto the centre square ( but what can you do it is D2 Ammos).

Now onto your missing blokes you seemed to fail to mention you also had young Nick from sandy playing in your side whom i suspect wont be at bentleigh this season and was pretty close to BOG for you guys. I'm not sure about your most experienced ruckman being out but your best one on the day spent most of his time on the bench(number 35???).

After all is said and done it is pre-season and coaches will play with their squads and give players a chance that wont be in the 22 come round 1. Its the players you identify and the experience you gain from these matches that counts for the season ahead. Yes you don't want to lose but we al know Rd 1 is when all the chips will be on the table.

Na Emilio, not making any excuses, we're not fased by the result and I know it's all about the blokes there on the day getting a good run in, which they did.
Just wanted to give a bit of a review of how things shaped up/panned out. Hasn't been too much talk here this pre season and it was the first time we'd tested ourselves against another club so we can start talking a bit!
As for Nick, well yes he's a great young tallent. He's only 17 or 18 and it's pretty clear he can go a long way with his footy which is great for the kid. It's clear for anyone to see on the clearances page on the VAFA website that he's been cleared to play VFL/TAC Cup. Well done to the lad :thumbsu:

OP's were a much bigger & stronger team across both games yesterday. Also have a lot of depth also with 8+ on the bench in each game, is it because of the "Boundy factor" hmmm not sure. What I do know is they'll be a top 4 side, also heard they had a few out as well.

As for the ground, it was in better nick than what I saw 2 years ago, but will it hold up across winter?...probably not, especially the square. Oh well it will be the same for both teams playing on it.

As for Boundy, you tell he's played at a higher level from the way he moves & kicks. Without Bannister in the comp, he'll easily be the favourite for leading goal kicker.

How did the pracy games go today? Any comments?

eltham beat emmaus st leos by five points. eltham missing a few but apparantly so were emmaus. pretty even game all day, shot after the siren for eltham to win the game.
all in all a good hit out for both teams...

wow this thread is full of action

Teams must all be confident with their prep for the year is this cone of silence is deafening!!!

Anyway, what practice matches are on this w/e if any and how ar enumbers on the track with the season only 2 weeks away

Im hoping for a close competition this year and wish every team the best of luck

Footywhereever i have to agree alot of the boys have gone quite quiet in these early stages before round. Lets get into it boys it is just too boring!

i also hope it is a close year because there is nothing better than coming into the last few rounds and still having to perform well and get the win to secure your top 4 spot. i think that there will be 3 or 4 genuine premiership contenders and 5 or 6 who will fight for the 4.

Thoughts gents...?

Okay Hoppers, I'll have a go. Premership contenders - Banyule, Bentleigh, Glen Eira, Westbourne. Others around the mark - Parade, Emmaus. Not Premiership contenders - Eltham, Therry, Prahran and Salesian. Hudson back at Westbourne will be a hugh assest.

Banyule, Parade, Leos, then daylight, but don't underestimate the combine

We at SMS are going along OK. Lost a couple, picked a few up... Have a practice match on Saturday against North Old Boys at home. Should be a good test!

From what I've heard, seen & think - Banyule, Westbourne, Paradians, St Leos, Glen Eira have recuited exceptionally well & will be all competing for the top 4.

Know nothing of Prahran & some on here are not rating them at all, you'd have to also give them a chance coming down from D1, wouldn't you?

Couldn't agree more sniper. Those teams you mentioned i also think will be up and about very early and dangerous all year.

My boys and i are at Westbourne are keen as for round 1 so it will be interesting to see how our new blokes go with our current core of players. Hard to really get an indication from the praccy's.

Sniper i have to agree with you also, going on the clearances both to & from a club these 4 clubs have the most inbound movements.

The other clubs havent had a lot of inbound recruits of any calibre and the losses tend to have been big ones.

Biggest loss to the comp is Bannisiter for sure, i dont know how any club can simply replace a 100+ goal kicker

If Boundy's early form is a reported then Parade will be in for a big year with the leading goal kicker

Have to also agree with you Sniper!

Prahran will struggle this year, they got belted in a number of games in D1 last year and have not picked up enough players to replace the outgoing (according to the VAFA website)

I guess we will find out in 8 days though

They play Parade tomorrow. So we might find out quicker.

Well there you go! even though it's only a praccie match it'll be interesting as nothing has been said about them at all!

Just back from a big night out in the old dart. Anyone know any praccy match scores. For those of us OS how abt some pre season predictions in the lead up to round one. How abt your top 4, grand finalists, premier, relegated teams, leading goal kicker and comp b and f.
