early in the week to be doing your tips i normally leave it for a thursday night after the teams are read out. who are the top 3 players at eah club to watch out for! for my self i wouldnt say i have much idea so im hopig you guys can help me out
Hi All, Long time reader first time poster.
CB- I don't know many of the teams so I will have a go
Emmaus St Leo's - Anthony Hickey, super fit, strong midfielder, has represented the VAFA at u/19, u/23 level and possibly the C - D4 Game and has played Senior VFL Football at the Bullants.
Chris Foxy Beleuzar I think it is ? Plays at CHF, athletic, fit and a great mark. Can kick Multiple goals and is a huge key. Played U/23 and C-D4 Match.
The Baranello Brothers and Ballard are other key players.
Banyule - Have had huge numbers out Heidelberg way, and an influx of quality players from around the region. Very well run club who have had a solid pre season. With Skipper Ash Brown back fit and firing they should right up there come September.
Bentleigh - Daniel Wills, VAFA U/19 Rep Player, Best on Ground in last year's D3 Grand Final and a genuine footballer who plays in the middle.
James Robertson - Absolute Freak, is an extremly talented forward / midfielder who has won a league best and fairest.
Luke Forrest - Tall Key Position Player, Good Mark and will be a player who will shut down a lot of forwards in the comp.
Parade - David Boundy - 50+ Senior VFL Games, kicked 10 goals in his one game guest appearance last year, great for the club to have him back on a full time basis which should see Parade playing finals.
David Spithil I noticed on the clearences is another from De La / St Pauls East Bentleigh who has had VFL experience, is a great addition. There have been a lot of ins on the clearences so be interesting to see how they go V Eltham this weekend.
Old Westbourne - I don;t know much about them, I believe Chris Hudson - Key position player is back playing after returning from Werribee, will be a big addition.
Glen Eira - Dimashki is a big in, and along with the usual older brigade and experience with a few young ones coming in I think they will play finals, very hard to beat at Packer Park.
Therry - Again don't know much about them, They loose Corey Bannister to the EDFL, it is very hard to replace forwards who can kick 100+ goals obviously, however, this creates opportunity for other players to stand up and be the target.
St Mary's Salesian - Don;t know much about them..Griff can you eleborate ? Stevens, Oldfield etc will be there keys.
Therry have picked Donaldson from Uni Blacks. Played senior footy at Bendigo Bombers. Didn't play last year due to an ankle injury. If fit will be one of the best players in the comp.
Jayden Donaldson ? He played TAC Cup for the Bendigo P.
I recall watching him playing for Vic Country a few years ago in the national u/16 champs. Good player and if it's the same player im sure he will cause plenty of back men some head aches.![]()
How are the facilities at SMS, heard you have to change in the car park ? any big name recruits ?
Taking out all the "big names" out of the equation for a minute, I think the bottom half dozen players in a side are almost as important as these so-called superstars that are getting thrown around.
How are the lists of all the sides going ? The strength of the twos is always a big indicator. If that side has plenty of players pushing for a ones game, then i think you are better off than having to rely soley on one or two players with a name. Bentleigh last year won D3 in both grades, Willy did the same in D2.
Best of luck to all teams
sms have lost probably 3 - 4 senior players and have picked up 3 - 4 senior players. No super stars just an even mix. Just hoping to be competitve this year after the last time in D2. About Oldfeild, Stevens etc. sms are putting more responsibility on the youger players and hope they can step up. I would say thats about were the club is at.
Would that be a fair assessment Griff?
might want to change your tip if you're picking this one on the back of that one bloke, hint hintBentleigh v Prahran. One team up from D3, the other down from D1. Prahran should have been in D2 last year if it weren’t for the Pirates ‘indiscretions’. I don’t know much about them to be honest, but in the past one relegated team has gone well, the other poor, and I can’t see ESL being poor in this comp. The key to Bentleigh is, as has been for some time, James Robertson. Freak. The year he was injured they were demoted. Last year he was fit a firing and they were promoted. If he can stay injury free this season, they will be very competitive. I’m tipping Bentleigh by 28 points.
Finally Round 1 is here. This has been one of the most anticipated seasons I can recall. It seems every team has recruited well and are talking up their chances. D2 season looms as the most competitive division in the VAFA. In light of that, tipping becomes so much harder……. I’ll have a crack anyway…
ESL v SMS. The battle of the Acronyms. I was very impressed with ESL in 08. One of the most disciplined sides I have played against and extremely well coached. They don’t seem to have lost many and with the likes of Beluszar, the Baronello bros, Hickey and Ballard, they will be right up there this year. I don’t know a great deal about SMS but what I hear is all-good, they rate their chances this year, but D2 is not D3. ESL at home are a 5 goal better side. The Animals by 40 points.
Bentleigh v Prahran.
Eltham v Old Paradians. Eltham are an unknown for mine, have they recruited well? Have they lost many? Is Coach Hollywood playing? If they heave kept their core list they will be hard to beat at home. John Galvin, Hayden ‘Duck’ Dillon and Crooksy are the pillars of that side and will need to have big years for them to make finals. Parade on the other hand are the talk of D2. Every team will now be aware of the Boundy factor, and good on OP’s for securing such a big fish. Parade surprised some higher placed teams last year, but were inconsistent. If they can apply those efforts week on week they will be a force to be reckoned with. OP’s by 31 points.
Glen Eira v Old Westbourne. Okay, so I never tip against my own team, but this fixture in the past has been very feisty, and more often than not gone right to the last quarter. Glen Eira are up and about supposedly. They started last year poorly but got better as the year went on. Their key players in Massis, Diamond and Tsirogiannis, and nearly the best ruck in the comp in Spink will make them hard to beat. In the past they have lacked quality key position players, and the loss of Ryan Clark does not help at all. At Old West things are going along nicely. We have picked up a few, and had some really good U19 come through from last season. Leading the recruits is Critta Hudson, who played in the 07 flag with us. He returns from Werribee VFL and will be huge for us this year. Look out for a big season from Charlie Hunter. Warriors by 1 point.
Banyule v Therry Penola. Banyule have put in more clearances this year than most clubs have for the last 5 year’s. The list is huge. I still think their most important player is Tom Shepherd. When he plays well they are a much better team. Historically the Bears are quite hard to beat at home, and always start their seasons well. Therry have been written off by many with the loss of Bannister. He is a huge loss, but I think it hurt them last year that he was their only option going forward. The TP captain McWhinney is a gun and didn’t play much last year. If he is fit, there is no reason why they can’t be right amongst the chances. We will no more come Sunday morning. I’ll go with Banyule by 3 points.
My Tips - ( only my opinion )
Banyule over Therry Penola by 5 Goals. Have recruited well, well drilled, and well lead by Brown. Therry have lost Bannister - yes they have recruited Donaldson, but a big ask for the kid to come in strait away after missing a year of footy and do what CB did..
Glen Eira over Old Westbourne by 2 Goals. Play very well on there ground, im backing them to get up, they were impressive last week V St Leo's..Huddo up forward will be very handy.
Parade V Eltham - Parade by 3 Goals. Recruited well, Boundy obviously the key but there are other good young players down there, like young, spithill if he plays could hold down a key position and they should walk away with the chocolates.
Bentleigh v Prahan - Bentleigh by 6 points. Don't know much about Prahan, I will back Bentleigh at home with a full compliment of players they should be too good.
SMS v ESL - St Mary's Salesian by 4 Goals. They knocked of NOB's (D1 side) last week by 5 goals apparently without Oldfield and Stevens Boys ? ESL lost at home to Glen Eira so I will go on Practice match form and tip them to have a win..Beluzar is the key, this guy is so talented.

Tips for this week
Bentleigh V Prahran - Bentlaigh have talked themselves up so much that are unbackable favorites. Just home they dont go home with doughnuts and a bruised ego. Prahran have lost more talent than they have gained so hard to know where they are at
I wish everyone the best for round 1 and look forward to a competative year. Lets see if the pre-season hype was just all talk!!!
Tips for this week
Banyule V Therry - Banyule to be far to strong too many recruits that have great wraps. Therry no power up forward without Bannisiter McWhinney will have to step up a long way. Crowley an unknown from QLD
Glen Eira v Westbourne - GE have recruited very well but based on last year have to go with Westbourne as they seem to have kept a lid on things down there this pre-season. expecting something different from them away from their windy dung hole
Parade v Eltham - Parade due to the gun in boundy and a few other followers. Eltham is too far away and havent recuited well this year
Bentleigh V Prahran - Bentlaigh have talked themselves up so much that are unbackable favorites. Just home they dont go home with doughnuts and a bruised ego. Prahran have lost more talent than they have gained so hard to know where they are at
SMS v St Leos the boys from SMS will back themselves but will find in much tougher than D2. STL should show the form from 2 years ago and win in a close game
I wish everyone the best for round 1 and look forward to a competative year. Lets see if the pre-season hype was just all talk!!!
