Well what an interesting lot of results from the weekend, a couple a upsets along with a couple of tight games. Just proves that this competition may be closer than first thought. Still, only early days yet

Bentleigh may have surprised a few on the weekend, including the D2 scribe with an upset at home against the Glen Eira, who were coming off a great win. Glen Eira may have a few to come back though as their reserves only just fielded a team. So we can t right off the Saints just yet.

SMS & Old Westbourne looked to have had a great tussle at Ferndale with the visitors coming away with the points. A win maybe just around the corner for SMS, but are coming up against heavily backed favourite Banyule who are coming off a shock loss

OPs notched up there first win against St Leos with the veteran Brabender kicking 5, a great effort. He must be like a good wine, just keeps getting better with age.

In another close game Eltham were lucky to hold off a determined Therry Penola, who looked to have maybe replaced Bannister with a new spearhead in McWhinney?, kicking 7.

Prahran had the upset of the round for mine defeating Banyule. Banyule were my flag favourites at the start of the year (not the that means much) so this is a shock loss for them. Or could it be that Prahran just outplayed them a their big ground.

A tipsters nightmare this round with early results depicting a closer comp than expected, maybe we'll have to wait until things settle down a little, to see who breaks away

Apparently GE recruited Mimo someone from St kilda City, those who follow SFL will tell you he's a absolute gun. But didn't see him line up today nor play last week, so who knows??

Well played on the weekend by the Bentliegh boys, too good for us on a horrid day for Glen Eira. Hopefully we dont see that type of game for the rest of the year.

Sniper you may be getting Mim mixed up with his cousin Mark. He has come back to the club after an 8 year absence. Expect him to cause some headaches when he comes back in a few weeks.

was down watching the SMS vs WB on the weekend and it was quite clear one of the goal umpires, guessing it was WB's (due to every decision favouring them), made some horrible decisions, calling one shot at goal, which was nearly on the full and a few others goals that were clearly points...
does anyone from westbourne have anything to say about this, pretty disappointing, there players even looked embarrassed?
or is this a regular thing that happens from this club, seemed to work in there favour and had SMS rattled for a good period.
must give a mention to the umpires on doing a good job in stepping in and changing the decisions!!!

Is Mark D from Wanny South ? He will indeed be very handy at Glen Eira when back from Injury..

As for my tipping, it's going about as well as Richmond's season....:p

ok after a few results that went against concenses ill get the ball rolling with tips for this week

STL v Bentleigh - this is the match of the round with STL to have a narrow win of 13pts with the home ground

Eltham v Prahran - the open spaces of Elthams ground will will make this game a cracker as both sides like the space. After Prahran's win last week im sticking with them to win by 30 pts

STM v Banyule - After a shock loss last week and by all accounts a solid week on the training track im picking Banyule to bounce back by 40pts

GE v Parade - Parade will have to much firepower upfowards that will stretch the GE defence all day. Parade to make it 2 in a row by 28pts

OWB v Therry - Therry seemed to run out of legs last week. Playing away this week to OWB coming of a good away win i cant see them opening the account - OWB by 36 pts

Looks like D2 will be a cracker this year, good luck to all sides this week

Yeah it's still very hard to know where clubs are at!

My tips this week

Bentleigh - Done nothing wrong at all, will stick with them till they do
Prahran - Have to on last weeks performance
Banyule - HAVE TO BOUNCE BACk!!
Old Parade - I think it will be closer than you think
Old Westbourne - Therry are my early favorite for the spoon

First time posta...
It's interesting that the results of the 1st 2 weeks in D2 leave no one with any real confidence for this week's tips.
St L vs Be
St Leos ...a firm pre season favorite come up against an undefeated Bentleigh ??? You could toss a coin, but go the home team

GE vs OP
Parade...another pre season fancy are 1 and 1, facing a similarly up and down GE on their own dung heap??? ditto -if in doubt go the home team

E vs Pr
Eltham (who scalped OPs, yet just overcame Therry last week) meet dark horses Prahran who touched up Banyule last week and were very honest against Bentleigh in Rd 1??? ditto -if in doubt go the home team

Ba vs StMS
Banyule..after a stand out performance in Rd1, stumbled last week and now meet a determined St Mary's Salesian unit -who while 0/2 have by no means been disgraced in this division- and are on their own dung heap so they fancy their chances ...Banyule maybe

OW vs Th
Last match sees Therry-after a much impproved effort last week meet the Warriors who also showed a great improvement last week after a disappointing start to the year...OW the likely victor at home

I think it will take a fair few rounds for us to get any real indication as to the likely 'standings' for this season
As usual early Wins are invaluable and Injuries to key players will seem to hurt some teams worse than others

A small aside - as a long time watcher of D2 footy - the standard of footy this year seems a lot higher than the past few years. Bigger bodies, better skills and general intensity are noticeably on display
Does anyone else share that view ?

I think there is more depth in the D2 this year; however, at this early stage, I don't think anyone would hold a candle to Williamstown or Penisula from 2009. It is early days and sides wil have to get use to new players.

Totally agree with this comment. Overall standard is higher this year but Peninsula would still be a fair way in front. I think they would of gone close to D1 finals in 2009. Willy were beatable on there day.

My tip is that finals will come down to the wire/last round between 6-7 teams and 5-6 will be in contention for the drop coming into the last few rounds

St Leos vs Bentleigh
Eltham vs Prahran
St Marys vs Banyule
Glen Eira vs Old Paradians
Old Westbourne vs Therry Penola

well what a round this week
must have been a cracker of a game between STL & Bentleigh to end in a draw - Sniper any update on how you saw it?
Glen Eira 1's are on fire - pity about the lack of depth with the 2's seeming to struggle
Good to see Therry open their account with a solid win over OW
Parade must be dissappointed to their start ot the year

This weeks games will be of interest with the top sides all playing against the bottom sides. Hopefully a few upsets will see the comp stay close together

saw the game was very average.. bentleigh played very poor no where near the standed of footy i've seen them play..As for leo's they only had 3 blokes keep them in the game, a very good midfield out fit but i think they will struggle alittle on bigger and better grounds.... that ground is woefully.

it was f***ing windy at Wattle Park is how I saw it :). St leos just that little bit more inaccurate in front of goal. Bentleigh held their own in the last 2 mins in St leos forward line. Tough defending into that wind

Do you really think GE V Eltham is a top side V a bottom side, both are 2 out of 3

Do you really think GE V Eltham is a top side V a bottom side, both are 2 out of 3

This is the game in the middle 4 v 5
GE have been beaten by Bentleigh while Eltham by prahran (teams above them)

The result of this game will put a game between the top 4 & bottom 6 (of course this goes on the theory that all of the top sides win)

Either way this match should be a good contest

I was at the game and it's fair to say the ground was very poor, hopefully council can have something done about it, but it's not ESL fault.

Again my tipping was shizenhousen as Rex would say :p

Unfortuately St Leos have a ground with a really sandy base that has an obnoxious weed covering 1/2 of it (not that I'm a green keeper's boot lace). Agree no fault of St Leos at all, hopefully the council do something about it, like re sew it.

The oval behind where the athletics were, looked picture perfect though

Interesting that some people are "splitting" the ladder already into top and bottom after a mere 3 weeks of results.
Only 3 weeks ago, St Leos, Parade and Westbourne were 'early flag favorites'...now they're relegated to "bottom of the ladder” teams???
Recent posts indicating Therry's early favoritism for the dreaded "spoon" now also seem fairly frivolous after their performance on the weekend.

My tip is still for a real slog all year with the race for both finals and relegation being hotly contested.
In fact with a few injuries here and a dropped game there… we might well see some teams feature in both races!

GE are a case in point...
Even though they got over the line on the weekend, OPs defended into the wind stoutly for the first half of the last quarter and with Boundy setting up play loose behind the ball , had actually increased their 3/4 time lead.
So if OPs had hung on, instead of conceding 6 of the last 7 goals in 15 minutes, they'd be considered a top team.
Also quite amazing that they kicked 7.3 in the 1st q, donuts in the 2nd q and then 3.10 for the remainder of the match, with 2g in the last q into the howling wind. A model of consistency they are not.

On the other hand GE after last week's insipid effort against the Dees went into this weekend with more key personnel out, yet rallied to win … Can anyone work out their form??

As a complete aside…how good is Pete Brabender!!! I flicked to the Ammo Record retrospective this week to see his name featured in the best players from B Grade in 1995?
On Saturday, he was easily the smartest footballer on the park against GE and snagged 4 himself and set up at least another 2 for his team.
He is still a JET… and only a mere 15 years later.
I wonder if we’ll see him in the 2025 Ammo Record still in the best for OPs.

Also don’t go too hard on the GE Magoos - Despite the fact the club worked hard and recruited a substantial number of new players this year, they been missing in excess of 15 players for each of the first few rounds and a large lump of them are either Seniors or in contention for Senior selection.
So as these guys gradually return, the Magoos will certainly benefit from the influx of talent. I’m certain Bedds and the boys will give a good account of themselves very shortly to indicate how much they have improved since last year.

Have GE been struck down by swine flu? That number seems a little excessive, or are they just all unavailable?
