After further talk on BigFooty, the odds have been revised with the commune shortening substantially and now on the 3rd favourites. The other merged club in Bentleigh-Richmond are still outright favourites with Hawthorn on the second line and then the 3 D3 mainstayers with SMS.

SFX have firmed with reports they have a few more players in there second year in the promotion-relegation battle.

WB, UHS & JOCs dont have many friends at the moment, I guess we'll see after Round 1

People have been talking down the JOC's and WB and as such,

Have SMS joined the Branch Davidians playing their home games out of Waco, Texas with David Koresh as their Coach? If so they should shorten even further in the odds.

I believe the word you were looking Rooster was combine, not commune.

Great column though. Did you suffer insomnia last night?

It will come down to putting the best possible team on the park as we can IMO, as finals is a different ball game to normal home & away matches. If that means that a player will miss out thats played 11 games then so be it. Those are the harsh realities of life.

Whether that person will sticks around the next year, will be a test of that persons character. Look at Blake at Geelong (I know, AFL is different to D3 blah blah blah) but you know the point I'm trying to make.

If a player of their experience was to walk into UHS OB, would you say thanks but, no thanks? Ultimately it will come down to the senior coach's final decision anyway.

Anyway finals is still some 20 long weeks away

I cant imagine any team would knock players like that back, but IMO those players would need to have put in the effort during the season also. You cant just reward blokes with finals games if they are white elephants during the home and away season without pissing off a lot of people around the club. It could also start a trend with some of the more talented footballers at the club knowing they dont need to train twice a week or do a pre-season to walk in and play rnd 1. Maybe im just to idealistic and naive.

Steven King trained all year with Geelong, and dutifully played in their reserves, and was a former captain of the club. A poor example.

I've seen what Grand Final selection can do to some blokes, it's a very bitter pill to swallow, and I wouldn't want to be the bloke giving up their spot to someone who hadn't been down to training much, or attended any of the club functions, or stuff like that. I think it would be very poor for team morale, especially among the fringe players.

It's an interesting topic, and it could go either way at the club. When Paul Dimma played a couple of years back, there wasn't much thought of 'a person getting dropped for him'. I think most people understand that you have to put your best side on the park for any game.

Paul didn't train or play much that year because of other commitments with work and the business.

If people can't make training or games because of other commitments, then as long as that's communicated to the coaching staff, then there aren't any issues......and that goes for regular players as well as ex-AFL players.

They're not above the law, and I'd hope and assume they wouldn't be treated that way at our club this year.

I suppose it could be a little harder to be loyal to a club that would drop you like a bad habit come finals time for a bloke whos not around much, no matter who he is.

I was lucky enough to play in a GF a couple of years ago and right up until selection night I was sure I wouldnt. You can actually see the disappointment on a blokes face when they dont make the team, no matter how much they want the club to succeed, and thats without blow in finals players.. I cant imagine what it would feel like if you got pushed out of a GF for a bloke who hasnt really put in all the hard yards.

(so you know im not having a dig at u bentleigh boys, its hypothetical!)

Just a quick question:

When you have an ex-AFL footballer drop by for a few games in a year, like Paul Dimmatina or Mark Graham, and they're not down at the club all the time like the rest of the playing group, is it good for team morale? How does the bloke getting dropped for them feel? Are they treated like blow-ins, or guns-for-hire?

Why do you assume they are blow-ins who won't be around the club? I think your making uninformed assumptions that because someone has played a higher level, they breeze in and out at will.

I think you will find Andy Kellaway has done nearly all the pre-season bar a couple of weeks after Christmas. The other two only signed last week.

When you way up the pro and cons, I think most players and clubs would be happy to have them on board...wouldn't you?

3 sleeps to go..

There was a real buzz around training last night as the excitement builds and everyone knows the fight is on for spots in both sides.
For those who don't believe Bentleigh have that many numbers, there was a man watching last night who has just moved to the area and is looking for a club for his son. He spoke to me after training is I warmed down and asked "What was going on tonight?" and I said "What do you mean?", as I thought it was pretty obvious it was footy training!! But he then said "why are there so many players out there, must be 5 teams or something?".. my answer was simply "that's just how many we have".
It was also funny to hear him describe us as a "noisy bunch" after the coaches complained about us not talking enough all night
Anyway we all received our jumper numbers last night with I think 97 being the highest.

Finally we are down to the last training session before the season. I'm sure everyone at Bentleigh realises now how much we need success after the words drilled into us last night by the coaches, president and board members. They will not accept anything less..

Oh ok, well now that YOU told us a stranger came looking 4 a club, and YOU told us that he thought there were heaps of players, we all believe you.

Well yesterday i was walking home over the yarra and the bridge was out and i couldnt get across when i spotted an old white bearded man sitting at the edge of the water. After a short conversation with the nice old man it became apparent his name was Moses and because he liked me so (or the popsicle i was eating at the time) he parted the yarra for me so i could cross and get home. He even told me where to find francensense and murr.

and for those of you who dont believe me, ask me and ill tell you again, and then you will.

It doesn't matter what anyone thinks about our so called inflated number count as we know how many is on our list, by the jumper no.s that were handed out. It also doesn't matter how many is on our list as everyone knows that you can only field 44 players per Saturday.

Thats all that matters, although it's good to have competition for spots

My point. You dont have to convince this forum about ur numbers. We'll all find out when we play eachother, not cos Harold Holt reappeared after his 40 odd year swim and said u you were noisy.

I assumed nothing. Let's go the video tape ...

Nothing 100% confirmed. Just another rumour that he may play a handful of games.

When Farren chipped in about the Mark Graham rumour, this was his response. Knowing that Paul Dimmatina also only played a few games in 2006, I posed my original question. They'll be in and out due to availability, which means someone else will be in and out to replace them.

I wasn't talking about Andy Kellaway, whom I believed had been down at preseason very early, and as such, one would have every belief that he would play most games. He has obviously become part of the playing group as a whole.

When you way up the pro and cons, I think most players and clubs would be happy to have them on board...wouldn't you?

As long as you weren't the one finding yourself outside of the team for some hot shot blow in who comes and goes when he pleases, maybe doesn't know all the blokes names, and so on.

Also, would you trust him to back you up in a stoush, or protect you from incoming attack?

I'm just saying, that's all ...

You would nearly think this is division 1 or A if you didn't check the thread name. Boys we are playing D3 or what should be called division 6 in the VAFA. If ex AFL players want to play at this level and pretend they are stars again so be it!

The Gryphs will be fine in 09..

- 80 players on the list
- 11 new 1's
- 20 new 2's
- 1 ex hawthorn listed player (AFL - never played a senior game)
- 1 ex VFL player
- 2 senior diamond valley footballers and 2 senior EFL players
- fielded 10 man benches for both the 1's and 2's in all practice matches
- 40 man preseason training camp under the belt
- new game plan
- Great coach reappointed and entering his second year (took the club from relegation contenders in 07 to 5th in 08)

Gryphs in 2009?

Do I detect a touch of jealousy against clubs that may have recruited players of a higher level Guls?

Whether it's A Grade or D Grade it's all relative to the people playing in that comp.

Correct..

There are a few being processed now and the rest have not played with their previous clubs for the required period or are new to footy.

The hawks and vfl recruits have played with us before and have had a year or two off so no need for clearance.

As I said.. we're not expecting to set the world on fire but at the same time wouldn't expect us to be the walk overs ppl are suggesting.

Hawks do look good on paper though.. Liam Murphy from Melbourne High - Is he a tall blonde haired fella? Also notice a couple of A graders migrating to their club. Shoud really show us where we are at at this early stage.

Fair enough. Sounds positive for you boys! Good Luck for the year!!!

I think we should all just move on from the Bentleigh recruits as it will just go round and round with quotes being referred to and then back and forth.

I don't think anyone cares who we sign so long as they have to put in the hard yards to get a game.

as im flying out to fiji in 6 hours & therefore will be missing round 1, i wish the best to all teams this weekend & trust the preseason has held you all in good stead for the coming season...

the flag will drop and the BS will stop - a motor racing saying but applicable here too.

looking forward to 11.30 am and 2.00 pm saturday.

AFL is nice, but the sense of community we get from following our respective clubs closely, by playing or helping out off the field, is sheer magic.

Let's all have serious fun out there!!

Good luck all

Whether that person will sticks around the next year, will be a test of that persons character.

Is it a test of the clubs and selection committee's character in weather or not they decide to play the gun blow in or the guy who's battled away giving everything he has for the club for 9 months?

Also, there is no minimum games qualification requirment for seniors, only that they are registered with the club by the June 30 deadline, so it is possible to have some real blow ins
