Agree 100% Sniper! Cant believe they are outside the 4 (for now...). We had them round 1 and we pretty much stole the game, they where very good! We have them again in the last round, could be do or die for them.....definatley one to watch..

That was a pretty good game really, unfortunately for us I couldnt get back quick enough to punch the ball through for a behind after the turnover.. 4pts.. Thats why we are not in the 4 at this stage, losing buy margins like 4pts 2 SMS, then losing to the Hacks (dont know how) twice 11pts and 5pts and monash 8pts.. Should have closed those games really.. Both the SMS and Hawks loss by 4pts happened in the last 2minutes also.. The Draw with the wicks hurt also...

Round 14 Review

Not one to normally concur with popular view, but I agree you could make cases for every single team this Saturday. I will publicly praise any tipster who can correctly select all five matches. Should be a cracker of a round…

Bentleigh over SFX by 18 Pts (The X-Men will give their all on the rebound after a shock loss, but they are playing the D3 yardstick so their efforts will be ultimately futile. Shane Fergus to star for the Demons).
Monash over Hawthorn by 3 Pts (Match of the round at East Caulfield Reserve. These bitter rivals of the late 90s will slog it out all day in what may become a fiery contest at times. The Gryphons should be able to shut down and block the potent Hawk forward line and exploit the idiosyncratic winds that frequent the windswept ECR. The ever reliable Lee Wells to be amongst the Gryphons best).
Wicks over Westies by 16 Pts (Would not be surprised if the end result was reversed, but every game is a final for the Wicks and there is too much on the line for them to drop this. Craig Mahony to star for Elsternwick).
The House over UHS-VU by 21 Pts (Powerhouse’s recent form has been ordinary but a source close to Uni High has indicated that they are unlikely to win again this year due to their extensive injury list. They will fight hard but the likes of Paul Sosic will ensure the Piranhas keep their supporters happy at least for another week).
SMS over St John’s by 15 Pts (If this fixture was played at Glen Iris I would be tipping the Saints by plenty, but a windswept and bitterly cold Doveton is nirvana for no-one and I expect the Joc’s to push SMS all the way. Class should prevail, but it is games like these that St John’s simply have to win if they want to hold on to 4th spot).

Good Luck to all

Round 15 Preview:

Winners will be

Bentleigh by 16pts
Westies by 11 Pts
Wicks by 41 Pts
Hawks by 41 Pts
SFX by 25 Pts

Round 14 & 15 Review

7/10 (47/75 cumulative)

Much has already been documented regarding the exceptional nature of D3 section, I will only add that I have never witnessed a ladder so evenly poised with three rounds to go. Two games plus 17% separates St John’s in 4th and Monash in 10th meaning all teams in between and the two previously mentioned can all be relegated or make the finals. The only thing us pundits can be assured of is pulsating football in all games involving these teams as a win or loss can completely change the constitution of the ladder.

The big improvers of the past two rounds have been UHS-VU and West Brunswick. This column all but wrote off the Vultures a couple of weeks back, but they have somehow managed to conjure up a winning formula and given themselves a serious finals chance. The Magpies look even better. Take out Bentleigh, and I think you could make a case for West Brunswick playing football equal to anyone in the competition. Their fighting spirit has never been questioned, but it is the flair and skilfulness of their midfield that has this column in raptures. 4th spot beckons.

Big losers of the past two rounds have clearly been Elsternwick. They are fast becoming the Richmond FC of D3 Section. Pump up their tyres one week and watch them deflate the next. I have not tipped them correctly all season as their form continues to fluctuate from very good to downright awful. Injuries to key players see them having a real fight to stay in D3. Their one saving grace may be their relatively strong percentage.

Bentleigh continue to go from strength to strength. Only a fool would have them anywhere but Premiership Favourites and whilst I do not believe for one minute they are over the line, 14 wins out of 15 is a pretty strong case whichever way you analyse the stats.

Bring on the weekend...

Round 16 Preview

Bentleigh over West Brunswick by 16 Pts (What was seemingly a straightforward fixture on paper a couple of weeks back is now looming as a real danger game for the Demons. Similar to St Kilda, they do not need to win and may be tempted to rest key players or tinker with structure, whereas The Magpies are a real show for finals, but probably need to pinch an away win such as this to steal 4th spot. Cannot tip against Bentleigh at home though).
SFX over UHS-VU by 6 Pts (Once again, a couple of weeks back I’d not have given the Vultures a chance, but a home ground advantage coupled with a real chance of snaring 4th spot will have them purring. Russell Matthews to continue his fine form for Uni High, but the class of the X-Men to ultimately prevail).
Wicks over Monash by 11 Pts (Unlike most Murphy-Wells Cups in recent times, I expect this one to be nip and tuck all day. The Wicks have been hurt by injuries in recent weeks, but seem to have the wood on the Gryphs in recent years. Should be a cracker at ECR but I expect the Wicks to hammer another nail in the Gryphons relegation coffin).
Hawks over Joc’s by 15 Pts (Speaking of hard teams to follow, Hawthorn Amateurs also fit that description, however, I believe they are playing some of their best football of the season at present and should provide a minor upset. If this occurs the door is wide open to all pursuant of 4th. Don’t expect this to be easy as St John’s will not give up their position in the four without a dogfight. Match of the round.
SMS over The House by 25 Pts (If I was to select a tontine for this round, the Saints would be my selection, however, I would not put my house (pardon the pun) on it. St Mary’s/Salesian have shown all season they are a quality side capable of demoralising opponents, but The Piranhas were not disgraced last week and should be tougher to beat at Ross Gregory than many may suggest.

Good Luck to all

It makes sense if the team to fold/merge is currently in D3.

possible folders:

Wicks - one too many used condoms found at their ground on saturday.. I suppose on the brightside there werent any Bottlenose Dolphines to choke on them.

Phouse - 60% of the side is deported to Ireland for various crimes relateing to the IRA's illegal gambling and extortion rings.. The other 40% are unavailable due to thier great grand children moving off to college.

Hawthorn - pack of c*nts

hahaha. Love it - Probably the best post of the last 3 months.

Only rivalled by the wisdom shared by SetShotSpecialist or snomeD

Agree it doesn't make sense BUT:

- there is a rumour that a team will fold or merge (don't know who)
- there is a rumour that 2 teams MAY be relegated from D3 as a result

That is the full extent of my understanding.

Only 1 team to be relegated from D3 and the top 3 are being promoted from D4 making it 12 in D3 and 10 in D4

Bentleigh over West Brunswick by 68 points - The premiers...at home...unbeatable. WB will put up a fight for a half, but that is it.

Uni High over St Francis Xavier by 6 points - Tough one to pick, but am going to go with the home side just for you Nikko.

Monash Gryphons over Elsternwick by 22 points - Wicks just going at the moment and the Gryphs are playing slightly the better football.

St Johns over Hawthorn by 18 points - Hawks have been playing well of late, but Jocs need a big performance and Aaron Abela will be hard to stop.

Powerhouse over St Marys/Salesian by 16 points - Just when the House look they are struggling they always come good. Nick Bull and Paul Edwards to combine for seven goals.

Interesting Day at the Zoo - Matthews didn't play - went to hopital instead before the game?? Great effort by our ressies but have run out of players - no bench again - fair dinkum more injuries than RMH on a Sat night.
Seniors had a real go [players playing both games again] - we kicked terribly for goal - 6. 11 at half time to the OXs 8.1 Close enough at the final bell but ran out of ________ Puff

Taskmaster - your thoughts

Good hitout Nikko, we were lucky you guys didnt kick straight in the first half. had our backline under pressure for most of the day. Got some quality talls in Kirk and Bender who are pretty damaging. Thought your number 7 also had a belter, moves well for a bigger bloke. Aside from the goal kicking thought you blokes managed the swirly wind a bit better in the first half, but then as you said might have just ran out of puff. Game was played in good spirits and the cold beer on tap was terrific.

Hey Nikko,

You blokes really took it up to us. You would had us in a bit of trouble if you kicked straight. Some big boys running around in that senior squad and quality!!!

Our second qtr was pretty bad and we (As a team) and Myself personally recieved a fair old bake at half time, by Joe!! We knew you guys were fighting for a finals birth, but also avoiding relegation, so we knew that it was going to be on!!!..

Fortunatley for us, we got our a..es into gear and came out with a win, but credit to you blokes, great effort and really pushed us all day!!!

Good luck for the final 2 rounds!!!

Good positive comment!!
Coming off playing you boys (2nd) last week, we play 4th, 6th and 3rd for the remainder of the season in the 2s. Tough final month but we will be well prepared going into finals. Surely on that final day it'll be us v you and could go either way with one win each during the season now. Will be another great contest.

Surely there are more than 2 teams in the ressies. Wouldn't underestimate 3rd and 4th now.

Yeah you can say that now after the result on the weekend.
Power House gave SMS their third loss for the year and their second loss in as many weeks. Mind you if SMS kicked straight it would've been a 1 goal game.
Would suggest now that top 3 in the ressies are in it with Bentleigh's round 18 trip to Albert Park now becoming very interesting, purely to see if PH can challenge. Should be a cracker and a great preview the week before finals.

Powerhouse 2's were very good on the weekend!! We got smashed in the first quarter (9 goals to 1) and never really recovered.... your right though, we need to get a bit more accurate in front of the big sticks! Not our best day at the office and being down to 1 on the bench didn't help! Some big injury's over the past 2 games is not ideal!! All credit to PH, they were too good on the day....by a fair bit!

I would say that the top 4 in the ressies will be right in it with a shot! Uni High have slipped into the 4 and will be dangerous come finals also! Going to be a tough preliminary final for whoever loses out of us and Bentleigh in the 2nd semi (assuming we finish 2nd, which is looking likley...)

So what are you saying: No Griff - No SMS?;):D

Can anyone shed some light on how the VAFA came to the conclusion that D3 Finals would be held at Oakleigh??? Is it based geographically...????

I suppose it is better than Vermont........Now that was a bit embarrassing for the league last year. Not a blade of grass on the oval and that was a finals venue?????

Oakleigh have had a few finals in the past. Also one thing going in their favour is the complex is fenced in, so the league can charge people to get into the game & park their cars. Not a bad oval either
