Tigernuts talks about himself in the third person.

Redgum hates when people talk about themselves in the third person.

Who's coaching West Brunswick this year Red Gum? Gussie stepped down at the end of last season, didn't he?

Thomo, 33 - 35 turned up Monday with 9 from North Kew. At the moment it is all an unknown. Committee was only decided last Monday night, still have jumpers and name to decide in coming weeks.

Will get a better indication in next couple of weeks of numbers, however, most guys will turn up in late Jan, early Feb if they are going to play.

At the moment we are keeping all senior players from last year (kew), unlike at the end of 05' when we lost at least 10 senior players to retirement or overseas.
Old timer, Is last years coach, Craig Horne staying?, and if so is he training and how is he looking fitness wise?

powerhouse could be in a bit of strife. heard some of there ex south yarra players going back to there old club. looking for coin id reakon. if true, it will be a big loss of good players.

Richard Peoples is coaching West Brun - ex Ivanhoe Pres and reserves coach.

Horne is playing, fitter than ever. Is assistant coach in 07"

Any Ivanhoe blokes going across with the ex pres?

Wasn't Horne rumoured to be going else where? DV I think.

Your info is on the money oldtimer.

We've had a few semi-formal sessions around Prinny Park and signs seem good at this early stage. All familiar faces so far but we'll probably see developments after Christmas. Many of the young Uni boys from last year are sticking around which is a good sign for the club.

Who plays who first round. The way I read is that 2 v 9 and 3 v 9 in the first week which would be hard for Hawthorn. Should it be 2 v 9 and 3 v 8.

I've tried to figure it out. You make a good point about the first round and it's a recurring problem. I've put the first half of the year together but there's a bit of guesswork and the dates are uncertain. This draw is largely guesswork but is drawn from the information provided in the above posts. You'll see there's some anomolies in terms of home and away sequences for some teams (esp. OW and LaTrobe) which means I've probably stuffed up somewhere along the line.

I hope this is at least a little easier to understand than the previous format.

This thread’s been pretty slow lately so I thought I’d go out on a limb and make some ladder predictions for the upcoming season. Ladder positions at the end of the home and away season:

1st. Latrobe Uni. Probably shouldn’t have come down a grade by all reports after their reserves winning a flag. Will hardly lose a game at home and are generally one of the younger and fitter sides going around.

2nd. Powerhouse. Had a lot of injuries last year but were able to pull it all together at the right time of the year. Have heard that recruiting is going okay and Edwards will kick a few again.

3rd. Old Westbourne. Have picked up some good recruits but lost a couple of promising youngsters to local money clubs. Will improve under second year coach Fab Gatti.

4th. West Brunswick. Always pick up good new players. Have the reigning B&F (although I heard E’wick were in his ear on presentation night) and are always thereabouts.

5th. Elsternwick. A lot revolves around three or four standout players that are all getting on in age. Anytime Jack Neill plays for them they are tough to beat. Will not lose many on the postage stamp.

6th. Kew/Nth Kew. Big unknown about the merged team. How many players from Nth Kew are coming across and are they any good? Always have quality players but can they become a quality team?

7th. Hawthorn. Never played against them but by all reports are just about the most hated team in the lower grades. Will struggle with the jump in grades, expect to win six or seven games.

8th. Ivanhoe/Assumption. A club on the way down. Will just win enough games to avoid relegation. Their main avenue to goals is gone and apparently he has taken a few with him.

9th. Monash. If a couple of the boys running around in the earlier game decided to play at 2pm they would finish higher but this is relegation year for the Gryphons. May still cause the odd surprise at home.

10th. Swinburne. Everyone predicted the wooden spoon for the Razorbacks in 06 but I think we were a year too early. Their good players are getting on and they will struggle unless they pick up another 6-8 good senior players and retain the senior list from last year.

Happy for others to have a go at this early stage, I could be completely wrong.

1st. Latrobe Uni. Will hardly lose a game at home and are generally one of the younger and fitter sides going around.
Spot on with their home ground advantage. Not sure if they'll cruise all the way through with uni players going walkabout - but should be pretty good come finals time.

2nd. Powerhouse.
No idea how they are going.

3rd. Old Westbourne. Have picked up some good recruits but lost a couple of promising youngsters to local money clubs.
They are/were a pretty close knit bunch of youngsters - if too many have gone for coin, many more may follow. Any ideas who has gone?

4th. West Brunswick. Have the reigning B&F (although I heard E’wick were in his ear on presentation night) and are always thereabouts.
Not sure who would leave WB for EW - but you never know.

5th. Elsternwick. A lot revolves around three or four standout players that are all getting on in age. Anytime Jack Neill plays for them they are tough to beat. Will not lose many on the postage stamp.
Their engine room would be getting on. Is JN the 9 foot ruckman? When he's not injured he lifts the whole team 100%

6th. Kew/Nth Kew. Big unknown about the merged team.
Like Monash, if their good players decided to pull their fingers out and earn a bit of a sleep in who knows what could happen. Mixed news so far about the merger results, but it's early days yet. Potentially a lot better than 6th.... Potentially.

7th. Hawthorn. Never played against them but by all reports are just about the most hated team in the lower grades.
No arguments from this corner about their lack of popularity.

8th. Ivanhoe/Assumption. A club on the way down. Will just win enough games to avoid relegation.
Would be devastating to drop 2 years in a row - how many have they already lost, and are many likely to go to West Bruns with their new coach?

9th. Monash. If a couple of the boys running around in the earlier game decided to play at 2pm they would finish higher but this is relegation year for the Gryphons. May still cause the odd surprise at home.
The most geometrically bizarre ground in D3. Not every team has a cartographer/geospatial scientist in their line up, so they'll definately have a few upsets in Caulfield.

10th. Swinburne. Their good players are getting on and they will struggle unless they pick up another 6-8 good senior players and retain the senior list from last year.
Those 6-8 good players have been "getting on" in years for a while now, if the baton isn't handed over soon there could be a few tough years ahead.

Happy for others to have a go at this early stage, I could be completely wrong.

If you are completely wrong Warrior, I am as well. Refer to comments in Bold, above.

Good Analysis Old Warrior. Here is my prediction.

1. Elsternwick: Should have gone up last and will do so this year.
2. West Brunswick: Couldn't imagine their B&F winner going anywhere. Also Sammy Hille on board can only make them stronger.
3. Kew: Secod half of the year was much better and whatever they get from North will only be a bonus.
4. Ivanhoe: I doubt many will be going with last years coach.
5. Old Westbourne: Would have had them in the 4 if not for the rumour of losing some of the kids.
6. La Trobe: To many comings and goings from the Uni kids.

7,8,9 & 10 doesn't matter

A bit unfair on Bentleigh and South saying that E'wick should have gone up last year Grant. Do E'wick look like picking up anyone else?

Also, who is Sammy Hill? I saw his name mentioned a couple of pages back as well. Is he definitely playing for WB?

Way to early to predict anything. Mostly just rehashed BS from season 06 &or crap from other forums.
Too much can change between Christmas and the start of the season, esp seeing as most recruiting is done during this time.

In all fairness Turbo, if most of your recruiting is done between xmas and the start of the season then you can write the year off. I would think most sides (barring the uni teams who have a very high turnover of players) have a fair idea of how they're looking now for the upcoming season. Granted, it is early though and most clubs are playing their cards close to their chest.

I agree with Turbo in that a lot goes on at the start of the year. There would be plenty of D3 players who aren't that keen pre-January, but then get itchy feet when the season looms. All the same, what does it matter to throw your hat in the ring with a ladder prediction? Most people weren't far off the mark early in 2006. I'm no Nostradamus, but you aren't Erin Brockovich either.

Finalists:

Elsternwick: Were good last year, have a big home ground advantage, and probably still holding a grudge about not being in the big game last year.

WB: Look like holding onto most of their key players. Highly unlikely there'll be defections to Wicks. Should consolidate on the efforts from the last two seasons and be well in the hunt.

LaTrobe: From all reports a quick young team which may worry a few of the aging lists in the league. Few players will worry about having dropped a league, but they may struggle during exams etc... Should give the finals a fair shake if they get there.

Powerhouse: Apparently in a good position to build on last year's success and will hit the season with confidence. If they can maintain some momentum they'll be a thorn in the side of OW.

Midtable:

Old Westbourne: Probably be there or thereabouts again but the league's shaping up as more even than last year and I doubt there'll be games like those against St Mary's and UHSVU last year. If they're losing kids to cash they may not improve on last year's agonising miss.

Kew: Hard to judge a team that's been through the merger process. I'm putting them dead centre as a bit of a safety measure. They seem to have the depth, as shown by their 2s results, but need to convert that to the later game.

Ivanhoe: Have been in a bit of a free fall in recent years but should do enough to keep themselves out of relegation danger.

Relegation danger:

Hawthorn: Unknowns and unheralded (and apparently unliked). I've heard that their ground is tiny, which won't worry Wicks but may be enough to keep them from the bottom two.

Monash: Some quality going around at Monash... but it's going around too early. May face the same problems come exam time as LaTrobe but have a smaller student base to draw from. May be able to save themselves at the selection table and the unusual ground won't do them any harm.

Swinburne: Will struggle but won't be the easybeats that held up the ladder last year. No doubt will steel themselves for a fight and may be a difficult prospect at times but the length of the season will mean they're found out.

As to the order within the groups I'll leave that till after xmas.

Not that wide, but one of the longest in VAFA. I watched a game there this year. You need a telescope to see the blokes at the other end.

Just checked in google earth - not accurate to inches but near enough.

Glenferrie Oval 165m x 105m

Sportscover Arena 150m x 130m

Old Westbourne 145m x 115m

Elsternwick 135m x 100m

East Caulfield 145m x 105m

Interesting!

TigerNuts,
I think you'll find that Hawthorn are back at Rathmines Reserve which is a small ground.
