Which grounds in D3 are fit for play? I saw Ivanhoe's the other day and that looks very average.

From what I've seen and heard, I'd say NO to Elsternwick, Old West, West Bruns, Uni High (oops - D4).

Maybe to Kew, Monash (just barely), and La Trobe will be fine once they have finished repairs. Not sure on the rest.

They may have to change the fixture, clubs that can use their grounds may have to start the year with more home games.

Everything above seems to mesh with what I've seen and heard. (We actually agree on something knackers)

I reckon Hawthorn might be alright if Kew is...?

Swine-burn might not be suffering as much as other grounds either.

Interesting idea Crazy-B !! It looks as though at least half will be in very average / poor condition at this stage ( without water soon ). And some look absolutely stuffed. So safety will be a big player for when the season can start in many grades.

What are the thoughts on Crazy-B's proposal? would it work or would it give a great advantage to teams that play their home grounds well, get some early wins?

Possibly it would, but conversely if the other grounds improve over time, everything would balance out. I'd be disappointed though if I was in a team that leapt out of the gate with some early wins only to get pegged back in the last couple of rounds and potentially miss finals, or go into finals with no momentum.

It's the sort of suggestion we need though. I'm going to go nuts if we can't get a full season.

And further to this Red Gum : You can get great dry day teams and great wet day teams.

What if you play great dry weather fooball, but lose your early home ground advantage with this system. Then later in the year it gets a little wet and the teams tend to close the gap as the skill level is bridged or a greater opportunity of injuries start to take hold? I have seen teams jump out of the blocks in the DVFL and then get swallowed up during the mid-year-blues. I would say that this would have a larger effect in the VAFA with the two-down system ....early wins could be vital?

I am fence sitting for sure on this - but it will get back to player saftey and council approval anyway.

Monash's ground is really struggling. They are not allowed to train on it. It really needs some rain!

A summary of what we've heard about the grounds so far:

La Trobe - should be ok
Ivanhoe - unlikely
Elsternwick - no
West Brunswick - no
Old Westbourne - no
Kew - ok
Monash - unlikely
Swine burn - ? possibly ok
Powerhouse - ? (grand prix affected)
Hawthorn - ok

i am involved with a club in werribee that plays footy in the Geelong Districts FL which is already under the severe bite of Stage 4 water restrictions (ie The geelong area is!). They (Werribee Centrals) have been told their first 6 games will be played at home because their ground is one of few playable surfaces in the league. So i guess it defintely is a possibility???

And thats already after setting the start date for the comp back to MAy 5 as a first response!!!!

Pray for rain boys!!!!!

Interesting mix. One from D3 and two from the league below.

Last year we played 3 d2 teams, we got pumped in 2 and just lost a third. Not an ideal prep losing 3 practice matches. Not saying that we are going to win all 3 but to play teams in either the same comp or lower gives us a better chance of building up our confidence. Also we wanted to play against teams that were close to home so players will play and not give excuses because it is too far away.

Fair point, but seeing as you're playing at home the guys complaining would have to be pretty weak. You make a good point about confidence but is there any concern you might go into the season without really putting the acid on?

I don't know who our praccy matches are against except for the one against your boys.

Redhum, I'm sure the match against WB will be challenging but more importantly "the acid" will be on round one.
