The snakes have the horror run home too. I didn't expect the falcons to upset the SFXes - good effort there. Should make for an interesting clash between SFX and the WB this weekend.

Kew towelled up South Morn who were supposed to be on the improve... does this mark an end to their improvement, or is it just Kew getting their Sh!t together in a big way?

I think the travel factor hurts South Mornington , they had 9 changes from the previous week which makes things hard. We wasted a few chance early kicking 6-10 in the first quarter. We have the improving Eley Park this week which should be a good game.

south mornington are the youngest side i reckon i have ever played senior footy against. they seriously looked like an under 19's side.

hope they all stick together for a few year cause they will definately improve lots once they get a bit older and stronger.

Fair to say there will be an improvement again this wk from South Morn!!

Probably not there now, but at the bottom of my page screen is an ebay ad for footy wigs.
Wonder if they have umpire ones?
Got to be better than the thing the leader of the dark side is wearing ATM.

Bulleen gave my boys a fair hiding, i think it was 6 goals in the end, no excuses actually thought bulleen were a very good side, had a very good setup and played alot better than us. Having said that i really havent played in alot of matches that were umpired worse than yesterday, absolutley no consistency and some laughable decisions, i had a couple of the bulleen boys saying they thought we were stiff on a few occasions. Anyway well done to them, and we move onto next week.

Was it just P. Maebus that was his usual inconsistent self or were both poor.
BHN got invited to VAFA last week to talk about how P. Maebus was spoken to in the BHN v SFX game.

I believe the senior coach told him in the hearing he was crap and well past it. I also believe the umpire in question replied with he is highly respected as one of VAFA's best.
Far from what I've seen.
Anyone else who has had him recently agree with his assesment or the BHN coach?
Don't like to umpire bash but some of these guys are taking money under false pretence. The real worry is their ineptitude puts players safety at risk. Do we ignore this just because it is not 'PC' to complain about umpires?

The two Mick's we had at WB on the weekend were excellent.
What about the chick umpiring in the ressies for WB. Did a better job than our first timer on Sat. Still, he filled the breech when we had nobody else and we can't complain. He will get better if he does more.

Must commend WB on their footy and the way they present themselves. Rooms were excellent for away team and ground was near perfect. Canteen was clean well staffed and stocked.
Only complaint is minor, the awards were done closer to 6pm than 5pm.
Those of our number who lasted the distance did enjoy the hospitality though.

*Can't play but knows the rules
*Mouthy bastard
*Small in stature so likes to be in charge (Napoleon style)

True he made some errors but he has the three main attributes required to become a competent umpire.

As for the chick, she did a good job 'for a woman'!

Some friendly advice to the young South Mornington side - no point mouthing off when you are 100 large down. Suggest trying to get a kick would be more beneficial.

Agree that they do have some good young players, the ruckman was impressive and had quite a leap. Almost took mark of the year.

Questions that need to be asked
  • Can St Francis trouble West Bruswick out at Beaconfield?
  • Considering South Mornington have had 200 kicked against them by SFX and Kew away should they forfeit when they play at West Brunswick? We may see 300 kicked.
  • Can Albert Park put in one of these great performances away from home? and will the games against the Cobras and North Brunswick hurt them? massive game for them this week at Lilydale.
  • Can Viola kick enough goals to beat Kew?
  • Will anyone kick the ton?

Trouble? yes. Beat? Maybe.

They shouldn't forfeit... but they should pack some extra gauze and cotton wool for long the trip home.

AP are 8-10 goals better at home. They play much better in the swamp than they do on opposition's ovals. Those games will hurt them, yes. They won't be able to beat Mt L this weekend.

Viola cannot kick enough goals to beat Kew.

Around 80 will be the most any individual will kick this season.

I noticed the exotic and pole dancing classes advertised Spy....time for you to earn some extra income????

WB on the weekend - very good football team. No weaknesses and midfield super. Tough for any team when they win so much contested footy (as previous recognised) at the stoppages.

My apologies for not staying back for a beer (which is very unusual given my love for the froth) - had freebies to consume at the rugby.

BTW, how boring is that toiletry of a sport!

1. I think west will be to tall.
2. They should turn up but if it's a nice day then West could kick 300 points. We could have kicked 40 goals on saturday if we had kicked straight.
3. Their performance at hom have been top class. This week will test them
4. I hope not
5. Propbably not.

Hey Spy,

Cannot agree more on the player safety. Seems to be the last thing on the umps mind in the VAFA and first thing in AFL. A good balance would be handy.

As for the second point - WB female ressies ump, she was great when we played as well. Very fair and wouldn't be surprised if she had aspirations of umpiring higher....

And lastly, WB are by far the most professional outfit I have seen in years. They are obviously hurting form last year and VERY keen to make amends. Alot to learn from!

I wonder how much blame should lie with the head of umpiring. There are some talented younger umpires in blowing their whistle in the u/19s at present, yet they get very little opportunity to control senior games.
Are some of these umps who appear past it in D4 a protected species.
Combine this with the edict by ump's advisor (allegedly), that the non controling umpire should not overule the ump in control.
My beleif is this edict is made so as to protect the egos of some older umpires rather than getting the right decision.
How bad must an umpire feel when he clearly sees an infringement but is bound by his superior to not act. This may explsome of the puzzling NON decisions by second umpires recently.

It all smells a bit jobs for mates to me.

Clubs and coaches are constantly reminded of their duty of care with regard to players.
Yet when a coach puts forward his concerns about an individual umpire being a risk to player safety he is accused of being unprofessional.
My suggestion to all coaches would be cover your own backside.
If you think an umpire is a risk to your players safety, write to the VAFA and say so.
God forbid anything serious should happen to any player, but once you have put your fear in writting the onus is then on those in charge to examine things properly.

Again, let me say I have seen a lot more good umpires this year than poor.
Why should those who are doing a good job be forced to carry the reputations of those not fulfilling their obligations?

I think a lot of the problems come from there being too few umpires ending in the old "supply V's Demand" scenario. Its not that they are potected per se, its that who would replace them becomes the main concern.

I think you get what you pay for in life and perhaps we don't pay enough for certain services? Then again why would anyone do a job that they don't or can't do properly?

I would say that all umpires are there for the right reasons for sure, but perhaps some are not up to the task.....just like some players and coaches.

Its a good point you raised about notifying the VAFA of concerns. Just be VERY PC when doing so......or they may take it as an attack.....very sensitive people they are!

As for the second ump over-rulling decisions, we all hope common sense would over-ride any ego's but lets live in the real world.......unfortunatly this rarely happens nowadays, in any area of life, let alone minor sport codes.

This is an area of our game that has always been controversial, however it is even more so now because we have more than 1 umpire - it also leads to inconsistancy of decisions and opinions / interpretations.

The only way out of this hole is to "enforce" training for umpires on both levels and promote umpiring to current and recently retired players.
It would also be good to have the umpires come into the rooms prior to the game to introduce themselves and set the rules / tone for the day. Used to work a treat in the good ol' days....

I remember when the 'umps' use to come into the rooms, check boots, jewellery, then a quick chat about what they expect from the players and a brief on how they will umpire.
