Re: D4 Section Ammos

I know a lot of the umpires in lower grades ( I play Clubbies)

What does this Patrick bloke look like? I want to know if I ever come across him!!

Sorry Bomber. Can't tell you. I've had brain cleansing, meditative, hypnotic therapy to rid my memories of him. I woke up on Sunday morning, having ground my teeth down to the gums after having nightmares all Saturday night. It was the only remedy that my psychiatrist could recommend!

Please excuse me... i'll be typing with my left hand for the next 8 weeks. Have to go in for surgery in the next week or two...:(

Bad luck Eley park... thats a tough way to lose. Its a bad time to run into the snakesd too... We're on a roll baby!
3 in a Row BigWaz, you're on fire!!!

Fish, Grubby and Nuske are certainly giving you a lot of goal scoring power.

Should be a cracker between you an Eley Park!

When was the last time RC won 5 games in a season?

Re: D4 Section Ammos

Howdy ya'll,

Read an interesting email from the VAFA regarding umpire retention in their league. Apparently there are a few umpires that have decided not to continue due to the abuse they recieve from the sidelines.

I understand that they do this for the love of the game and for the love of umpiring. I also understand that they are very amatuer. It's pretty sad that this has to happen. It's just a game...

My opinion is that there are two sides to this dilemma.

1. Clubs MUST be aware that there people out there who love to abuse umpires on a weekly basis. This has to stop, if it doesn't there is definately going to be a shortage of umpires. These people must be dealt with accordingly...

2. Umpires must understand that their inconsistency can be frustrating for players and spectators alike. I know that they are amatuer umpires but it may help to be a little consistent (especially club umpires in the reserves games).

I really hope that this abuse toward umpires stops. I really hope that umpires become more consistent.

At the end of the day we must respect the officials, they take their time out to umpire for us like we take our time out to play this marvellous game.

very hard in the thick of things when your busting your arse on the ground and an official gives a wrong decision that rips your heart out and not say anything.
From the sounds of things from this forum and from experience as a player, this has been the worst year umpiring wise thus far since ive been around.
We pay enough in fees that umpires can get paid more to get more umpires and hopefully this results in better umpires being around. I think VAFA should spend less time worrying about clubs and supporters and find the source of the frustration.

Re: D4 Section Ammos

Ok I've kept out of this ump thing so far but enough is enough,Spy,I respectyou and your club, but when you name an ump their needs to be some tempering of remarks, that goes for all, everyone knows who I am ,and that was my choice,I'm a big boy now and can look after myself, this bloke had no say in his name being made public.
Sixty five, reasonable comments, you say "umps take their time out to umpire for us",we do it for the same reason all of you do,because we love umpiring as much as you love playing and coaching,if their are no players we can't play our sport and if their are no umps players can't play,we have to meet somewhere in the middle.Personally after my senior game on sat .I do 2 games in u17 for a junior league on sun,1st at 12 2nd at 2.15,shortage of kids their too,so some vafa umps go down to help the young ones learn, these kids are my replacements, and I know for some of you that can't come quick enough, hah hah.
Buckaz, you speak of money, and yes we do get paid and I agree none of the players do,but lets be realistic,my money disappears after 2 training nights and travel to grounds and uniforms, especially since the tax office has now ruled our umpiring a hobby,no more claims for anything.

You both speak of consistency, most of the rules have to be judged by the ump, their opinion, was he held? did he have prior? was it too high?,get the picture, and all this has to be decide in the blink of an eye and under pressure;do you all think we don't try to be consistent? Just as a player tries to kick through the centre every time,we try to be consistent, then add in you have two umps, two different people, do I have to say this adds yet another factor,we try to overcome this with our pre match meeting.

I played for many years, reported more times than i will admit too as well,I do understand the frustration,I will say this for VAFA,they are trying, believe it or not Brian Goodman's door is always open, suggestions and discusions always welcome.
Many of us are constantly trying to improve our umpiring just as players are trying to improve, there is not a game goes by that I do not say,"don't do that again tug"and so we all improve.
No one more than me would like to walk of the field and say "I didn't stuff up today",hasn't happened yet,but then I doubt that players could say that either.
You can take this as yet another maggot speech, or as it is intended, as a genuine attempt to get umps and players on the same page,I don't want upset players on the field but I have to do my job,and every ruling i make upsets someone.
As a end to this epic I will pass on something from one of my trainers, many years back.
"When an ump gives a free, they are telling the player, you have done something wrong, and no one likes being told they have done something wrong, then the ump awards the free and adds insult to injury by punishing the player,no wonder we aren't loved."
Cheers
Tugger

BTW Waz, the man with the curly hair is George. I met a couple of the other boys and also George's squeeze Felicia. Just mention Mount Evelyn next time you bump into them. Can't wait for the movie to come out - play Spot The Ammos in the various teams. One of the Hated Opposition Nobodies is an A grader for Brighton, yet one of the stars is a ressies player for St Johns in D2!

Great to see the Snakes get three on the trot. Keep 'em pumped! though obviously not with your busted wrist - use the other one

Tipping Board Round 14.

CH (64) - 59 + 5.
PortMan FC (64) - 59 + 5.
Ozza (60) - 55 + 5.
Animal (57) - 54 + 3.
Ruck Machine (55) - 49 + 6.
Catscratches (54) - 53 + 1?.
FatChicksNLT (52) - 51 + 1.
SudsMcDuff (43) - 37 + 6.
Sixty5 (39) - 36 + 3.
BigWaz (38) - 32 + 6.
Away Teams (31) - 30 + 1.
I don't give tips and this is nit picking I know; but BHN was the actual away team. Played on the back ground at Elgar and Eley Park had all match day duties. The matches were reversed from earlier in the year. So Away Teams got 2 on the weekend. Can't understand why Away hasn't complained himself.:p

Re: D4 Section Ammos

Nelly is probably right, I should not have named the umpire I thought ruined the game as a spectacle on Saturday.
I still feel very strongly about this individual though. Is there a point where an umpire is seen to be that bad, as judged by his own obsevers, that he is given a pink slip?
The reason I ask is this. If a player is seen as responsible for causing violence by his actions his club will (or should) ask him to leave.
We all regret the difficulty in getting and retaining umpires. I am one of the biggest supporters of giving them a fair go.
I don't know what the reason for it is, but this person has umpired a game I have watched 5 times, and he is getting worse. He is a danger to the players and possibly to himself if this is allowed to continue. I don't know the man personally. Unfortunately he has never stayed for a drink at any of these games. He may be a great person away from the game and I wish him no ill in his life. But action needs to be taken. The time for being 'PC' is past in this instance.

Couldnt agree more Spy, as long as we keep accepting disgraceful performances then we will never improve. Umpires like players must be held accountable for their performances. Its not acceptable to receive poor report after poor report and continue to get a job the next week. There is no doubt the umpiring in D4 this year has been at an unacceptable standard. The main talk in the rooms after the games regardless of a win or a loss has been the extraordinary decisions that have been made during the games. It does keep me a little amused however. What is going inside some of their heads I will never know and to provide excuses of "we have to way up so many different interpretations and different decisions and then make a decision in a blink of an eye" That is what umpiring is all about, exactly that!!! Making a correct decision after taking numerous aspect into account. If your not good at that then you should not be umpiring!!!

Smiggins!!

1. Umpires do a great job with an always hostile audience
2. I reckon they have been good this year?
3. We tend to hear about the bad, not the good.
4. Most come in and have a beer and/or chat - that is always great.

Spy, perhaps a copy of the game can be given to the umpire in question to review his performance? That may help in self assessment and provide an incentive to better future decisions. :)

I will say one thing in their favour, or more to the point, in their defense.
I hear the leadership is somewhat indecisive in what should be interpreted.
If what I hear is true, interpretations are being made to suit poor umpiring rather than saying this is the way it is done, now do it.
If the head is making poor decisions, it is natural that the body will fail.
I hope umpires wanting to do things the right way aren't being held back to cater for those who can't or won't cut the mustard.

I believe the coach is making arrangements to have a copy sent to the man in charge at UMP HQ.

Away teams updated spy, VAFA website had BHN listed at the top.
Away should have spoken up though if he had a complaint???:)

Only 4 rounds left before finals now & some big games again this week.
Not sure whether Eley Park Vs Richmond or Albert Park Vs BHN is match of the round? Probably the 2nd game as there is more at stake for the winner but I don't know who to tip in either of these matches? Thoughts?

A little quiet on the forum the last few weeks! Not much coming from the St Mary's camp. Perhaps going back to school and focusing on their mathematics! What's the probability of getting 18-0 now? And the lovechild Papaluca is hardly getting a mention either, but he may be injured!
Great to see great supportive banter between the lower/middle sides these days. Not much of the feral naive comments getting earlier in the season but I guess when you are proved not invincible, you shut up quite quickly!

How true.

It is good to see some contructive footy talk and perhaps not so contructive regarding umpires.

Chicken, I believe papaluca played on weekend after missing 5 weeks looking at there team lists hence why quite. Im not suprised the saints are quite after convincing loss on weekend. The rumour has it like everyone else throughout year there injuries are catching up with them.

As for them being quite i think its pretty clear comments were generated not from them as evident in sausage roll who was from another club i believe.

Anyway, my Rd 15 tips

Uni by 78pts over Nth Bwick
Sth Morn vs Syndal - Interesting game here, Syndal by 22pts.
Richmond by 29pts over Eley park
St Marys by 37pts over Bulleen
Eltham by 155pts over Lilydale
Albert Park by 10pts to throw 4th open a bit more.

I agree... both games will be close. I'm surprised that Eley Park got so close to BHN, so their form is obviously good after a big win at bulleen. Richmond has won 3 on the trot but hasn't played on many small grounds this year, so we may be at a disadvantage?

The other game could be a barn stormer.

Take nothing away from Eley Park, they were very good last Saturday.

Will be a great game against Richmond but I think the Sharks are up and going with a few regulars back.
