2-0. You beauty.

This is left field but something I've felt for a while.

I reckon we will be into Daisy Thomas and will be in the first few showing interest. Salary cap will tighten on the deals for Martin JR and cotch but if we have some gas left I believe we will be right into him

No inside word just my opinion

I'm confident now that we can draft and develop our own. Anyway, aside from Thomas costing the earth in wages, we already have someone far more significant that that overrated Magpie pretty boy, we have Blair Hartley!

Would be a very good pick up but can't see us selling the farm for him..
He will be milking it for all it's worth and not I am not a fan of paying overs!!

Only if we can afford it and don't have to fork out the centre of the sun to get him. Needs a serious attitude adjustment which just puts me off in the first place.

What part of develop own stars trade for depth don't people understand ?

Atm yes - but we'll probably start going after the "big fish" at some point in the future. Love us to make a big play for Cameron when he comes out of contract again in a few years.

I'm a very firm believer that Thomas is absolutely nowhere near his ceiling. He will be an elite player, I have absolutely no doubts about this. Him in our midfield would make us the best midfield in the competition. With Daisy and Deledio on the wing, Cotchin, Martin, Conca, Vlad, Foley rotating through the middle, we'd be unstoppable.

Now onto the sticky point - the money. Unless the club is certain that they could fit him in the salary without causing too many problems, I would have to say no. He's probably asking in the vicinity of 550k a year and that would probably be close to our most paid player. You can't have enough elite players in our team, even if we develop a young star, we'll eventually have to pay him the same money.

This is a pretty no-brainer for me, we have the key-backs, the medium backs and excellent depth for both. We have the key-forwards with ok depth and small/med forwards with excellent depth. Our depth in the midfield isn't too flash, with Vlastuin being the only decent player in the VFL at the moment.

What young players do we have in the mold of Dale Thomas? None. Even if we were to develop a young player from this year's pool, how sure are we that he can reach Dale's level? Even if that was to happen, how long would it take to get him to Dale's level? Our window is probably open for the next 3 years, until GWS and GCS take over from then.

This. You guys seem to (finally) have your house in order. No need for Wallace-esque type topping up now. Sure, trade to fill gaps, but Dale won't be the putty in a long term assault.

Reckon we'll be targeting someone like Xavier Ellis than Thomas. Won't cost much and like Pettard has talent but been hampered by injuries.

You make good, valid points but although Thomas is very good I just don't reckon he's "break-the-bank-to-get" good. For the kind of dollars he'd command, I'd want someone around the level of, say, Fyfe.

I'm not entirely convinced that the "good player but injury prone" aspect of the "moneyball" approach will ultimately translate from the non-contact, relatively relaxed & slow-paced sport of baseball to the full-body contact, high aerobic sport of Australian Rules Football that well.

But it does tie in with what we have done in recent years i.e. look for players at rival clubs who have something to offer and don't/won't cost a heap to secure. As a free agent Ellis will cost us nothing more than a list spot and some cap space.

Lids is better than Thomas , whilst Edwards is that close to if not his equal . Whilst O'hanlon appears the next in line . You don't build a dynasty by bringing over priced players .

I agree that Deledio is better than Thomas, but still, there is an absolutely massive gap between Thomas and Sheds. Furthermore, the chances that O'Hanlon will ever reach Thomas' level are extremely slim and he is also nowhere near as quick.

Thomas has match-winning ability. You only need to look at our game last year with the Pies for evidence. I'd much rather him on a wing than Grigg. He also adds to our list of our midfielders who can make an extreme impact up forward.

Also, all 'dynasty' clubs in the past have given up players and picks to inject quality into their sides. If an A-grader is available for a suitable price, then by all means, I hope the club goes all out to snatch him. Not going for Thomas simply because O'Hanlon may or may not become as good a footballer is quite a silly excuse to not go for him.

The sides that have had prolonged periods of success in recent times haven't gone and chased big $$$ players . West Coast , Briabane , Geelong and even back to Hawthorn .
The reason why not to go after a big name isn't based on whether we have a player good enough and likely to bet be as good , it's about what it costs to get them . Getting a daisy Thomas would mean the lose of a couple like Conca , O'hanlon , Ellis .
No thanks we have the outside game breakers and unfortunately at the moment they are being used inside and being sat by the opposition .
I agree we need to generate more pace around the midfield , however IMO it will came at the expense of players like Tuck , Jackson , Grigg being replaced by the Vlaustin, Arnott , Williams , O'hanlon types and we might see it by seasons end .
