Looks like Geelong have offered a contract for Daisy Pearce to be an assistant coach.

Is this a good move? She is definitely knowledgeable but with only 38 games in what is really an amateur league and doing her certificate 3 in coaching, is she actually qualified to be an assistant coach?

This will be an interesting one to watch if she gets the job

Would like to hear what the Geelong supporters feel about it

It's a great thing if she's up to it. Geelong obviously seem to think she might be.
I like her as a commentator. Not sure if that translates into coaching, but I don't have any inside knowledge on what she's like apart from what we see on TV.

Her commentating shows she knows what she is talking about. I think the AFL world is in a position now that this shouldn’t be an issue but you do have those people that think the women shouldn’t be around mens football to this extent

The amateur competition is irrelevant, if that is what you want to call the AFLW

Most NFL coaches and a lot of top level soccer managers in Europe never played at the elite level. Playing ability and coaching ability aren't mutual

One wonders whether it's purely a football decision, or reading the current mood that's permeating football with regards to the increasing involvement of women throughout the sector.

I suspect the latter. That's not to diminish her football knowledge, but I doubt meritocracy is the only criteria here.

It could backfire for Geelong if they give her a job and then just sideline her. Would not be a good look and would meet with howls of protest.

No brainer for mine. Given she’s in a pool of AFL endorsed female coaches on accelerated programs (max 6) she isn’t competing with a male assistant for a spot.

She’s in a seperate bracket that’s part paid by the AFL and the club component is out of the soft cap. If she has some coaching nous it is a free swing at a new coach

why would some of her salary be paid by the AFL and be outside the cap?

That’s how the accelerated women’s coaching pathway has been set up it seems. Two years in an AFLM set up paid 50:50 by the AFL and host club, and yes not in the soft cap

ok wasn't aware of this

Will be interesting to see how she goes if she gets a gig. Tbh I'm not wowed by her special comments, she speaks well but doesn't really give the viewer anything that isn't plainly obvious. Doesn't mean she doesn't have a good footy brain though I guess

I believe it that indigenous staff fall outside the soft cap, but it is paid by the club.
I get the theory from the AFL to implement this but I'm not sure I like it or agree with it

The role sounds like it's a mentorship under Scott so the only qualifier is that the Cats see potential.

It's interesting that she knocked back a senior coaching gig for Essendon's AFLW side. I actually think she would be less qualifed for that. Huge gap between having to manage 40 people and being a specialist/line coach.

Bill Belichick's first gig was as a Specials coach at the Colts when he was 23 years old, so yes

The gig, which involved everything from analyzing game film to driving the coaches around and working the Xerox machine, was originally unpaid. Still, in Belichick’s eyes, it was a sweet deal.

A woman becoming a coach of a mens team was always going to happen and the response from indigent men was always going to be the same. No level of experience would be enough for them, but sooner or later someones going to be the first, and they can go suck it.

Good luck Daisy.

Except there has already been a female assistant coach

Peta Searle was a development coach at St Kilda for a few years back in the mid 10's
