Would certainly be interested, but I would be throwing everything at Franklin. Neither would be likely, but due diligence and all that.
Even if all it achieves is the player's current club having to pay them more, then it's still definitely worth it.

I doubt we'd match Freo's apparent 1.3 million offer

If he went anywhere it would prob be carlton with Mick.

He always was Micks love child and they do have the $$ apparently

Everything I've heard indicates their cap is pretty tight. But agree that it is the most appealing option for him away from Collingwood (to him).

He'd be great for us, but I really hope Brodie Smith become that player for us whilst we continue the search for a KPD

Just to point out, irrespective of my username, that it didn't really cost us Dawes and Wellingham. Dawes was contracted for a further 2 years but was told his opportunities would be limited so in the best interest of all parties he seeked opportunities elsewhere. Wellingham also was offered a contract but wanted to return home. Had nothing to do with "spillage".

Sounds like spillage to me

Again, without wanting to go tit for tat, Wellingham received an offer on what was realistically his worth. With so many good players on the list, the cap needs to be managed accordingly and there was room for Wellingham if he wanted to stay. He obviously received a better offer elsewhere and one that was able to return him home to WA. So he took it. We didn't move him on just to clear cap space. He was still wanted but there was a limit to what our pay structure looks like in comparison to other clubs'.

As for Dawes he was contracted. It may have been "clever" with the way we maneuvered his clearance but again at the end of the day we did not need to offload him for the sake of it.

In the end, it did create some cap space for us by moving these two players on which will prove handy but it was hardly "spillage" as was quoted in the original post.

No, only what you could realisticly pay him after signing your other stars, As for Dawes yep he was contracted but you moved him on to fit lynch and his dollars in sounds like spillage to me.

We'll try for him, but if he leaves, it'll be to a club other than Adelaide. Having said that, we have the attention of another pretty reasonable FA, hopefully it pans out.

It would be rereshing for a Dale Thomas type to chose Adelaide, but very little chance of that. Would be a fantastic addition to our team. Franklin, LOL, as if he is going anywhere.

lol creative list management would be a better term. ;)

Wellingham is probably worth 300-350k. I don't think he is the 400-450k type player just yet, especially when we have guys like Sidebottom and Beams earning in the 300s- the latter our current BnF winner. You should also note that Lynch is on less $$$ than Dawes was on. This is also reflected in the compensation formula for free agency with what WCE received for his departure. The same can be said for Clinton Young and the 3rd round compo pick Hawks received for him. These guys are on less $$$$ than what Dawes and Wellingham were on at Collingwood.

If anything, it is creative list management by the football department to actually free up cap space to re-sign other stars we have coming out of contract post 2013.

Having said all that, you would be negligent not to be active in the free agency market and try to lure stars like Daisy Thomas, however, I just don't see him shifting interstate if he were to leave.

Have my reservations regarding drafting Thomas, is a quality player no doubt, however I'm not particularly keen on adding another midfielder to our side with questionable disposal. I'm not saying I wouldn't take him, I would, but I think there's probably better fits for our side out there and guys more likely to come.

He'd be a useful player to have, but I don't see him leaving the Pies, especially for an Adelaide club. Even if he would consider it, we'd have to pay a huge amount for him.

Would rather spend the big money elsewhere. I find him overated, IMO has had one really good year, the others has been a bit part player. Beams has gone past him, Sidebottom will, Pendlebury started at the same time and is much, much better.

I'm happy to 'chase' big fish FA, but I don't see the point in throwing big money at someone unless it really adds something to our side.

Disagree with those saying he's overrated. Just the sort of player we need. We've got plenty of inside grunt players who lack pace, flair. He'd compliment our existing midfielders perfectly.

Make an offer, nothing to lose if we have the cap space. Adding a borderline elite player to a list never hurt anybody. Whether he accepts is another story.
Anyone know when Griffen at the dogs is out of contract? He'd be my first choice when selecting a free agent.

Adding a 'borderline elite' player is good in theory, but the money to give up to get this guy would be well over what he is worth IMO. If he was to become elite, like he has shown in one season, sure maybe it's worth it to lure him here and get the rewards. The space we have now though is great to have, and should be used to try and get others here, but we also need to remember we have a lot of young talent ourselves, and we can't go throwing all our money at a borederline elite. In a few years Danger will be worth as much money as anyone else in the league.
