We lost a legend yesterday the great Dale Earnhardt was tragically killed during the daytona 500 nascar race.He was my hero and im gonna miss him greatly, ive seen heaps of nascar prangs where you see cars upside down in mid air and the driver walks away without a scratch i guess when your time is up'you gotta go'kick arse in heaven 'the enforcer'you were simply the best and its not gonna be the same anymore as i wear my Dale Earnhardt t-shirts.Your death during the last lap of this race was simply your last lap on your way to heaven.

maggpie_joffa,

I hadn't heard about Dale Earnhardt's death until I read your post. I've just been on the CNN site to get some info. Although NASCAR's not enormous over here, I'm sure 99.9% of sports fans would know the name and heard of his exploits.

It's always sad to here of the loss of a champion. I will never forget the feeling in Adelaide when news of Ayrton Senna's death came through. There were actually people crying in the streets (including myself) and memorial services were held on the GP track.

It sounds like a similiar reaction in the US. RIP Dale.

Yeah it's a sad loss, I'm not a nascar fan but I always knew Dale Earnhardt was a ledgend in that sport. I actually saw the story on the FOX news channel yesterday morning and at first I didn't believe it. The accident didn't look all that bad. They showed a crash Earnhardt was involved in a couple of years ago where his car flipped over and that looked 100 times worst than the accident that killed him. At least he died doing what he loved the most. It will be a sad loss to motor racing.

Hell of a shock. It is to the world of US motor racing what Elvis' death was to rock 'n' roll.

It's amazing how the most innocent looking of accidents seem to claim the drivers lives. Must be an element of fate involved. Dale certainly went out doing what he loved. It is ironic that he was trying to protect his own sons lead in the race on that last lap when the accident happened and his son lost anyway.

Very Tragic :( He will be missed.

Is it getting to a point in time when the racing should be stopped or at least slowed down? F1 cars dont go as fast as they used to anymore and the tracks are made to be slower. In NASCAR with these oval tracks they reach speed of like 200 miles an hour!

Thats like nearing 400kph or something rediculous like that. The crash looked harmless but he slammed into a wall head on going at them sorta speeds its obvious its gonna be life threatening.

Senna, three in NASCAR last year, a couple in CART last year and now Earnheart.

When is someone gonna realise that things have to change.

RIP Dale.

You're certainly right in noticing that Dale's crash didn't appear very severe. I know a member of a NASCAR crew and the rumour for years has been that Dale suffered a head injury years ago and was urged to retire but stayed on anyway. Whether this is true and what part it played in his death, nobody knows.

A tragedy and a loss of a motorsport legend. RIP Dale.

On the speed issue Jod, a number of people are saying that new parity rules actually had something to do with the accident i.e by slowing everyone down they were more bunched up, hence more likely to have an accident. So some people think the aerodynamic changes that NASCAR introduced might not have helped.

I know some F1 drivers said similar things when aerodynamic changes were made a couple of seasons ago (also when the grooved tyres replaced slicks). By using these methods to slow people down you can actually increase the danger by reducing the handling and grip of the car.

That said, there always seems to be some degree of fate involved in these things. Crashes that don't look as bad can result in death whilst accidents like Lowndes flipping his car at Calder ends up in him walking away.

I dont really know what can be done i guess with any motor sport no matter what you do there will allways be danger, although as i was watching this particular race which ended dale's life, i knew something had to give as when you see nascars going 4 wide into corners it only spells one thing TROUBLE.Although the crash which killed dale was small compared to the massive wreck earlier which actually had a nascar mid air and landing on its roof involving about 15 cars and they all walked away.I guess its gotta be fete it was dale's turn to go.I hope they dont tamper too much with nascars as a result of dale's death,it is a magnificent spectacle and u gotta have balls to even get in one of them things.

The thing with NASCAR though is that there is no avoiding the walls they purposely race inches away from concrete walls going at amazing speeds?? Why?

In F1 at least on most courses there is a runoff where you go over gravel then hit some tyres, but not in NASCAR.

Jus baffles me is all that these men put there lives on the line for entertainment. I dont think i'd get in a NASCAR.

The guy who nudged Dale's car and caused to veer off and hit the wall is copping death threats over there. People are claiming he is a murderer. The incident was the most innocent looking event I have seen in Nascar. It was purely a racing incident. As they said in 'Days of Thunder', "Rubbing is Racing."

i can't claim to be a big NASCAR fan, but everybody knows Dale Earndhardt and everyone knows he was a legend.
RIP

Shit solid bump.

Was my fave driver , been following nascar since 88.
Think losing Brocky at Bathurst whilst he was still competing in touring car/supercars.
Follow his son ( Dale jr ) now , great driver but not a patch on the old boy , got close to winning a championship about 10 years ago but has never won one.

He's also carrying a head injury from a shunt , many believe Dale sr had a damaged skull from a previous shunt ( THE FATAL CRASH WAS FAIRLY TAME IN NASCAR-TERMS ) that he'd had so i wonder if Jr will hag up the helmet.

The reaction from the rival teams when he finally won his 1st Daytona 500 says it all.

Long live THE INTIMIDATOR !!!!
