When MM brought him over with him with his crook ankle and the $ he was getting i wasn't very happy, after hearing he was great around the club with our young fellas and the effort he brings and his footy smarts every single week is second to none .

He has been good this year. If he holds his form he might just earn another ride at the rodeo in 2019. Long way to go though...

Bloke took his contract clause last year worth hundreds of thousands and tore it up.. not sure how many people would have done that.. bloke gives 100 percent every week and by all accounts is great to have around the club and a good role model for the younger brigade..
Agree with the sentiment of your post but I recall that it was actually in his best interest to remove that clause.... if the clause had stayed, we would have made sure he did not play enough games to trigger the (expensive) extension. By removing the clause, we could play him for most of the year and his performances earned him a new contract, which was on much reduced rate. It was a good move for him as it extended his career and we have benefited given his solid performances since.

At the start of the season i was of the opinion that his "footy smarts"(awful buzz work i know) would be very important to such an inexperienced side. He is one of the smarter players in the comp, and I think he will be a great assistant coach one day. But i underestimated how good he can be as a player. Have always liked him, not his fault the club paid stupid money for him. He has always given his all, unfortunately his body has nullified his effort a fair bit in previous seasons. Would have to say that ed curnow has also been another massive positive this year. Does so much heavy lifting, and if i wanted to teach a fisher or dow how to get the most out of themselves, ed is the first player I would tell them to follow. Works incredibly hard, and his disposal, while still not great, has massively improved over the last 2 years.

Earned some respect, not sure I would call it love. Cant fault gameday effort.
Not so sure about the too regular hail mary plays, and his ever expanding midrift.
Some "mature" players get a pass mark on the track, managing their body, when
the fitness is declining because of it, time has come to consider the future.

In my mind we can't keep Daisy, Simmo, Murph, Rowey, ASOS and others for that
"one more year", then we face the prospect of losing four or more "old heads" in
one hit.

Their phasing out must be staggered, to me it is Daisy or Simmo, take your pick,
one to go IMO.
I think simmo should seriously consider retiring at the end of this year. Wouldn’t like to see him struggling in his final year. He’ll reach his 300 milestone this year. Would like to see him go out on a high.

I called it in some sort of fashion that Daisy would be good for us this year at the start of the season.

Sometimes he over does things but as an ex awesome sportsman I know only too well myself that once age kicks in the mind is often doing things the body could do 5 years ago and it ends up looking a bit comical or poor when the two don't work together.

I enjoy the lucky dip game he is brining.

This.

Works his arse off every game. If he wants to play on he should get another year.

I’m not as easily pleased. He wouldn’t get a game at any other AFL club. He’s not strong at the ball and his decision making and ball use is below ordinary, l.E his banana type kick into our 50 last week. He’s a player with a broken body that has gone on 2-3 years too long. Sorry for the negativity but that’s how I see it

If he ever played to the same level he did at the Pies when he arrived at Princes Park we would all be in raptures. Problem is, he's hardly fired a shot mainly due to his body falling apart after so many years of playing the game.

Realistically, we have to make room in the seniors for the new breed coming through but he would be a terrific guy to have playing permanently in the VFL to assist with the development of the young players.

Let's move onwards & upwards, not tread water for another 12-months.

This has been my suggestion for 2019. Comfortable to give him another year in a developmental role in the VFL and an injury cover player.

I find this line of thinking intriguing. He is currently playing very good footy and is easily best 22. He is not keeping any young fellas out of the team. When there are young fellas knocking down the door to take his spot, then agreed, he gets pushed out. But until then, he stays. There are plenty more to go out before him..

You consider him to be 'Best 22' (a term that I consider to be a total wank) in a team that hasn't won a game yet this year and is a near certainty to finish on the bottom.

I am also talking about 2019 so if our drafting & trading goes the way we anticipate, he will be keeping some young fellas out of the team.

I agree in principle, but we won't quit all the older players in one fell swoop.

Not out of the question that Simpson, Rowe, Murphy, ASilvagni and Thomas may not be on our list next year.

Simpson & Rowe may retire. ASilvagni may join them.
Murphy may (may) look for/be forced to look elsewhere.

If fitness is back to a good standard, Thomas may have another year or two left in him and if he is as good with the young guys, as has been expressed on many occasions by the club, then why not keep him on cheaply? Why not?

It will become evident as the year goes on. If he's still playing well in 10 weeks time, it will make for an easy decision for the CFC.

For all the criticism ( justified) that Murphy has copped regarding what he doesn't or can't do - the attacking performances of the Carlton midfield in his absence shows how important Murphy is to attacking game. Also his absence has negatively impacted on the ability of Carlton to get any sort of rebound running game going from defensive 50 - Murph is always the player there to provide a handball option from defensive 50. I doubt that Murphy will be going anywhere - very important cog in attacking structures.

As for Thomas - good on him for being able to get to the state of fitness which allows him to feature more in general play - but the decision to bring him in as a 'marque' player when his state of fitness due to chronic ankle issue pretty much made him at best a B grade contributor when he should have been a major driver of team performance - was an epic blunder.

We'd struggle to make our total player payments wouldn't we? Would have to wonder if this was planned. Not sure who we could get to come over.

Ok, you've got me, Daisy isn't 'best 22'....on current form, he's in our best 15.

You are talking a lot of IFS - IF our trading goes the way we anticipate. IF our drafting goes the way we anticipate. Ironically enough I find this 'crystal balling' a total wank.

Tell me who we are drafting & trading that will push Daisy out?
Tell me the young players that Daisy is keeping out?

It worries me that so many fans have this fixation with youth. Yes, we all love young players and the excitement they bring to the team. BUT, it has to be balanced out with experience, and on current form, Daisy is a lock for the senior team (and looking likely for a further one year deal).
