Toast Dale Thomas

I absolutely loved Daisy, he was a ray of sunshine (with Pendles) after some dark years.

I don't begrudge him leaving for money and by all accounts his workplace stopped being a happy one after MM left. I think if he stuck it out his relationship with Buckley would have improved as both would have matured, Bucks as a coach and he as a senior player and on-field leader. I suspect Bucks wasn't the most mellow and chilled out coach in the AFL during 12-13-14.

I don't want to revisit this saga or pick at scabs, but s**t happens in workplaces (and life). Let's not be haters, he gave us some joy and success. I think he lost more than he realized he would by moving to the Blues, but we sleep on the beds we make.

Very true but by anybody's standards this latest news snippet is left field....you have to admit.

Hea a Collingwood premiership hero and hes welcome home now that hes retired.

I am not aware that retired players do these "one night shows" to squeeze money out of punters who pay to hear them speak and to take selfies with them. Who would want to go to one of these things for anybody, let along Dale Thomas???. If Dasiy's pathetic attempt a first?

Agreed, it's an ill-advised move on Daisy's behalf and a bit bizarre.

Absolutely not. Money is not relative. Thomas would be an idiot to turn down the amount of money Carlton was offering, particularly given that his window to earn that amount of money is so small.
The guy was tier 1 in terms of marketability at Collingwood, how much was he making in additional endorsements and advertising as a Collingwood Star? Switching allegiances almost certainly wiped that out totally and would have cost him a huge amount of money in the long term. If I were him looking back I’d have deep regret and would be more than a little sore at the management team that advised me to switch.

It all worked out ok in the end for the pies though.

It's not that he left to play elsewhere. It's the manner in which he left.

Lots of players have left the club and the fans have been supportive. R Shaw, H Shaw, Wellingham, Dawes just to name a few.

But if you disrespect the club, disrespect the supporters on your way out, then you should never expect to be welcome back into the fold.

He made his bed, and it was a disaster. He can now lay in it.

I think a lot of players do these testimonial type events/activities on their way out to try and squeeze 1 last pay day out of their careers. It'll be the book launch next.

Dale Thomas can f right off. Never want to see him back at the club. He can go to the re-unions, but that is it.

I have no problems with players moving, its a short playing career and they have very right to make as much as they can. But how they conduct themselves on the way out and after they have left is the key for me:

1. Thomas turned his departure into a circus, played a lot of games
2. He was a destabilizing influence on the playing group re his 'dad', MM, stirred up a lot of shit and made Bucks difficult job even harder
3. Once he was gone he carried on like an f wit when he played the pies.

How you go out, is how people remember you.

Spot on.
Precisely why I was against Beams coming back.
Treated the club like sh!t on his way out.

Yep, never been a huge fan of Beams but once he was gone, that was pretty much the end of it, never carried on when we played them and at least had the balls to sit down with Bucks and work it out. He had his own reasons for doing it but we all make mistakes. Thomas has never stopped being a dick head.

Thanks. Interesting all these nights have two players ( from the same club). Daisy, I just shake my head .

Yep agree, as a premiership player you would think he’d have shown a lot more respect & professionalism when played against us. Still carries on like an ass in his little media gigs now.

Some questions:

(i) How did he disrespect the supporters? Did he clip the supporters on the way out?
(ii) Subsequently, has he expressed a desire to be welcome back into the fold?
(iii) What disaster? Wasn't he earning $750k pa at Carlton?

The money would be handy, but it wouldn’t be the driving factor.

At $29 a ticket, minus ticketing fee, minus management commission, minus venue fee ...

... the money from those gigs would be stuff all compared with what they’d be used to.

He didn’t leave well.

Think he should go getting his old Pies jumper out the trash and show it some love like he suggested the little magpie fans do.

Also see my signature.

But why such vitriol to a former player? I really don't get it. If the player personally insulted a supporter, then fair enough I guess. If not, why take it so personally?

The AFL is a modern professional sport where players have every right to further their careers, however they see fit. Clubs are the first to dump on players if it suits their needs. And so what if Thomas had a little clip/barb on the way out or had a shot at former team mates when playing against them. Do you really think his former team mates spend too much time thinking about Thomas. I strongly doubt it. So why do supporters? Let it go and move on.

Pendles and Daisy came through that same draft together in 05, and for quite some time there was debate over who was the more valuable player at the club. Both were adored by supporters and both became superstars of the competition.

One was the consumate professional, leaving no stone unturned in his pursuit of excellence. Not flashy, not a big personality. But highly assured, confident and reliable. That reliability (plus the sublime skills, to be sure!) saw him become skipper and an absolute legend of the club. Adored by the Magpie Army and admired by supporters of other clubs.

The other played fast and loose with loyalties and with the affections of the throng of kids who loved the dashing way he played, his golden locks and goofy grin.

"I could sign (with Collingwood) before any sort of trade week period is up and that settles everything," he told us.

"And then everyone will have egg on their face and a lot of kids will have to get their No.13 jumpers out of the bin because apparently a lot of them are throwing them out."

And then he left. For the enemy. He took the extra coin and the longer contract and that's fair enough. That's his right. But he also knew that us supporters aren't in it for the money. We're in it for the love of our club. The money he earned came from our pockets and we pay for our memberships and our tickets and our merch because we're passionate about our club. So when he made that choice, after eight years as a Magpie, he knew what it meant to go to Carlton. And he went anyway, with too many twists of the knife as he departed for us to just forget. Mick had made the bed and Daisy was happy to get some rest.

So now he's in no man's land and it's entirely his doing. I hope it was worth it.

Naaaaah, no thanks. I don't watch footy to be reasonable, I watch it because I love the game and I love my club.

If I as a supporter want to hold a grudge, that's half the fun!

Just a bit of fun mate, he did go to Carlton.

That's it. It's all part of the theatre of the game. If you go to Carlton and you're a bit dicky about it, you're going to cop it.

He was obviously well remunerated for his trouble and I doubt he cries himself to sleep over it.

You've confirmed that you actually get some value in holding a grudge - Fun! That's good. Carry on.

But I suspect that a lot of supporters hold a grudge out of some misguided belief that their feelings are relevant to the player(s). I hate to say it but I would argue that not only does the likes of bad boys like Thomas not spend to much time concerning themselves with supporters feelings but also the good lads that supporters love. But then again, I could be completely wrong.

Exactly! We are on the same page mate.

LOL he wouldn't even know who we are so why do you think that? you're over thinking it more so. Many thought he was a dick in the way he left then the whole needing to suckle on micks bosom made it worse.

Plenty of players leave not many have lost the respect of the entire supporter group whilst doing so in such a unanimous way.

In the end he did us a favour so for that I'll buy him a beer. cheers.
