Just noticed Dale Thomas playing in the backline tonight, did alright and looked to be really comfotable back there. Anyone think he may be worth the punt if he plays backline all season? Could rack up alot more possesions and cheap marks. Just interested in other people's thoughts on this.

Cheers.

Thought the exact same thing.... Could provide great DT value if this ends up being his role.

You would think that given the 'tagging' success on Shaw last year, this will be a common tactic for other clubs. If Daisy can run off the other half back it will enable Collingwood to keep their structure and game plan in tact....

I like it! Just have to find the cash to fit him in..... :(

And heath shaw was subbed off pretty early (late in Q2 i think?) right about when daisy started getting alot more ball. With shaw there, im not sure if he will play this role...

I think Sylvia is a decent value pick, but there is no one else between him and Higgins that im willing to take a punt on.

Care to elaborate reasons behind crossing them out? What are your thoughts and perspectives of them?

Surely if cloke plays up the ground and thomas across HB they will provide excellent value, so isnt crossing them out before their roles are certain a bit premature? Or have you crossed them out because of their uncertain roles?

i am uncertain about Dale Thomas and his role. halfback is not his future, and i don't think this will last. if i buy Thomas i would want at least 85ppg and 22 games. can't see it this year.

as for Cloke... he let me down last year. and just watching him last night make we wonder, "why did i ever buy him". like Thomas, he would need 85ppg and 22 games which could happen if played further up the ground. but i just don't like the bloke. i think i'll pass.

Heath Shaw, Dane Swan, and Tarkyn Lockyer were giving me good vibe though.

and not owning Didak is an even greater reason to hate him even more. :D

yeah, tell me about it.

i'm starting to question the value of the likes of Lucas/Higgins also
they're just a trade in waiting.
and if they don't get their price up... 2 trades to upgrade.

I have been off Lucas for a while now - just dont think he represents the value that everyone believes.

Two very unconvincing arguments.

mm im personally tossing up between lucas and skipworth atm but lucas is obviously rusty so hopefully he can kick into gear.

on thomas i dont think he will last at halfback when malthouse comes back, however he could well provide a chop out for shaw

Even if Daisy does play HBF opposition teams will tag him because he is damaging with his run and disposal. I also doubt he will play HBF in the first place the pies already have M.Clarke, H.Shaw and the likes for that job. He also doenst play tight to any other HFF so he wouldnt be given a backline role IMO. IMO he is a small forward who rotates through the wings and onball.

T.Cloke i have put a line through and never really thought much of him. He will be playing in an improving team no doubt. But i think when Rocca returns and he gets the best defender week in week out he will struggle. But the main reason for not picking him is because i fell KPF are slowly moving out of the game. By that i mean its more about run and carry handball style than kick to a leading FF. Also i have seen Cloke very well held in just about every game. He was chopped up against eagles for the first 3 qtrs. By watching games you get a vibe or sense on how are playing is going to go and for me im not really getting a truly great positive one.

C.Sylvia was my boy and still could be. He was my unique pick that will defiatnly be a forward keeper in 09. Hes ready to take the next step and i saw it last year. He scored some very solid scores i did some calculation about him scoring over 90 points 50% of the time (cant remember exactly). He also showed tha bility to score 130's. This is because he is a very good dtmer. Plenty or marks, enough tackles and ball with an added 2 goals here and there. I only have one doubt over him and thats who he plays for. Melbourne, they dont look like winning many games thus not getting huge numbers. I noticed that the dees dont score greatly DT wise. Their sort of very similar to freo. That would be the only reason i wouldnt pick him. But if he played for any other side besides Freo, WCE and MELB he would be a 90-100 point avg in 09.

Alot of people are starting to doubt Lucas and Higgins. It may be because theyve been sitting in their team for too long. Higgins is a jet and expect an above 70avg from him. Think he scores the 2nd most points for doggies against saints in terrible conditions. He isnt a great dtmer though. He seems to be handballing alot without many tackles and marks. Lucas well by watching him in the NAB proper he looks very ordinary. But because of his low price tag along with his best 22 pretty sure, hes still very good value and their isnt much else their. Remember he will continue to get better week by week. I would be happy for him to avg 60-65. Also i missed out on both Bradshaw and Thompson last year which both provided great value.

though Dale Thomas will not play HBF primarily in 09...this does signify an intention by Collingwood to start getting him more involved in games.

Already pre-season there was a statement he would be used more in the midfield.

FWIW, this was not the first week Thomas was tried down back. It has been talked about all pre-season, and when he was subbed on in the 2nd half last week he also played defence against Richmond. He scored 28 in about a quarter and a half there.

He also play defense for brief glimpses against West Coast.

What we are seeing is a massive rotation. Lockyer, Didak, Davis, Shaw, Clarke, Johnson, Swan etc are all doing the full circle. The reason is our midfield obviously lacks the damaging players...but it is extremely versatile and teams will find it really difficult to prepare for us.

WIth such a big rotation, things stay unpredictable. Dale will not be sitting as a forward only. There is no doubt we are trying to get him more involved and more consistent. Plus he has the tank now which was never there in his last 3 years.

Also, if you look back to the International Rules which MM coached, Dale Thomas was used as a half back sweeper.

And although Blake Caracella was coaching, Mick had the earphones on and was still in charge.

If Heater is getting tagged, we'll throw Dale back.

I think expect an increase in average from Thomas. Will still get the odd 50...but should be more in the 80-90 range this year.

Ultimately your target would be for him to be your 7th forward.

not sure how closely you have been watching cloke in the nab cup (or in his 4 previous seasons) judging by your assessment above. he has looked a very dangerous commodity in each game whilst clearly not going at 100%. he is clearly the fittest he has ever been, has 4 seasons under the belt and this year can expect more assistance up forward and not have to contend with 2 and 3 defenders in marking contests as he did for most of 08. rocca reid rusling anthony dawes will combine to take alot of physical attention away from cloke meaning he will be inbvolved in alot more 1 on 1 contests in which he is very hard to beat. coll and cloke are set for a massive year and he is a DT steal at $334K odd

get on thomas and pendlebury as well - 3 excellent seasons already under the belt but now ready to explode

I don't have Cloke in my team at the moment but looking at his pre-season scores I can't believe more people aren't throwing up his name. Scores of 87, 90 and 98 in a game that's roughly 30mins shorter then a normal game is pretty dam good. 4th season for a KPP will most likely be further up the ground with Collingwoods depth of KPP's means a lot more marks and kicks. I've added him to my short list because he's a good chance to take the extra step.

Cloke's scores seem to be affected greatly by whether collingwood wins and if Rocca is playing.

2008 average:
With Rocca: 65.5
Without Rocca: 80.2

Win: 88 (12 games)
Loss: 58.5 (9 games)

Surprised with ave with rocca playing as thought cloke would get the 2nd best defender when he plays. Anyone know a reason for this?

So guess question is whether you think collingwood can take the next step and win 15+ games and whether rocca misses the same number of games.

Because without Rocca they will generally try to kick the ball to him a lot more. The same thing happened with Brown and Bradshaw last year. Brown got scores of 132, 124 and 71 when Bradshaw was injured last year(i think brown was hitting form then to though).

But anyway it looks like Rocca will be out for first few weeks and Collingwood are turning it on at the moment. So he's in my team :thumbsu:
