Hi all,

I am a long time reader and finally got my arse in gear and registered to post. I'm a passionate Geelong fan and love them through the good AND the bad.

Was just thinking the other day - with everything seeming to be quiet on the potential for out of contract players (eg. no Ottens etc available) to go to different clubs, do you think Damian Cupido could offer GFC something?

He has had a bad run with his knee last few years, but perhaps all he needs is a new home to reinvigorate his form and to get away from the mad man that is Sheedy. He is very quick, built like an Ox and is a good mark. Perhaps another foward option to replace Haynes?

Shoot me down at will (but only after you welcome me :) ), but i think he could offer GFC something quite worthwhile. Might be able to get him fairly cheaply too if the Bombers have given up on him

Cheers

Welcome.

I would not touch him with a barge pole. Except if I was using the barge pole to push him a long, long, long way away from our footy club. Gary Ayres would have recruited him, but we won't even consider him.

We have Ottens, Playfair, Kingsley, N Ablett, S Johnson, Mackie and Gardiner (assuming that Haynes goes) - enough mercurial talent there already. On his best day Cupido might be able to force Mackie and Charlie out of the team, but he just doesn't produce regularly enough for those two to be worried.

Cupido is talented, but lacks application. We have suffered this year when we have dropped our intensity, and having a guy like Cupido around the place I suspect would make that an endemic problem.

What I think we need is tough, uncompromising 'win at any cost' type players (eg. a couple more Chapmans) to spark Ling, Kelly, Bartel, Corey G Ablett, S Johnson, Tenace etc. into consistently playing with some good old fashioned G&D. Cupido wouldn't do that.

This year (and next, if 2006 is as good a draft as pople are anticipating) we should focus on good kids, not re-treads.

Welcome!

I'd be hesitant at going after Cupido. By all reports he has discipline/dedication/enthusiasm problems which have hampered him so far in his career.

That said, I do remember him tearing Geelong a new one a few years back and kicking 4 or 5 goals (correct me if I'm wrong).

It may be the case that he needs a change of scenary to spark him but I'm not sure I'd want us to be the team to take that risk. Unless of course, he came with a cheap price tag (salary wise) and we didn't have to give up much for him. Both of which, I think are unlikely.

Thanks for the warm welcomes........

I just can't help but feel he could be something of a Mooney type pick up. Just needs a committed, young successful side like Geelong to fire him up and the change of scenery to kick start his career again should do him wonders. The bombers have messed around with him too much. No doubt that when on song he is a gun!

Bomber can work wonders on Moon Dog and i reckon, just maybe, he could do the same for Cupido. Would be better than recruiting a recycled player from WA again thats for sure! :D

Not every player has to be the physical type.

I'm biased because i know Damian well, but he has genuinely freakish footballing ability, something we lack (Dog and Jnr. aside).

I'll give him a chance if he came cheap simply because if he ever reaches his potential he'd be as dangerous a player as you'll find.

High risk, high return.

I just honestly can't see him getting his act together. At 23 it would almost definately be make or break for him if he were traded. There's no doubt that he's got a lot of talent, he is fast, strong and can boot the ball a mile. I rate him highly talent and potential wise, but he only puts together 2 or 3 games per season. I'd rather see someone like DJ getting a chance to give his all each and every game, you know with a player like that you'll get the same player for at least 20 games of the season.

Cupido & pick 8 for Bartel?
No deal from me.

Mark Johnson and Pick 8 I'd consider, and if they threw in Cupido I'd take him rather than having Rahilly or Haynes hang around in the McGoos, but I just wouldn't target him.

I think we'll keep Bartel thanks, but like watching Cupido in full flight, but dont think its worth the space on Geelongs committed list.

The idea has some merit.

BUT

He has been through two clubs now without pulling his finger out, would he at a third?
Pike did. And it netted him his first of 4 premierships. So it is possible.

But Pike had the mongrel and determination in him. Cupido is just a flash in the pan.

Tend to agree Phat but when Jub say "Murphy" it turns me off a bit. He would have been the softest , the most over rated, the biggest sheepdog footballer to have ever put on the Hoops.
So,
Ist
Id say at 23 his body should still be sound but is it. Im willing to absorb the "wear and tear" that came with Ottens because he's a very talented 202cm. Cupido is talented but not that talented that we have to gamble with dicky knees on medium size player.
2nd
Assuming he is sound what is he worth, hard to judge but as this years draft isnt that strong it may be a 2nd round pick or as it's Ess and we are Geelong Sheedy may want to go for a player. Maybe D Johnson as he came from Bomberland
3rd
In principle I think we need to add to our game break ability.Players like Cupdio offer that, when on they can kick goals and create havic.I generally think a couple of players like him need to be added to our list .Dog is really the only forward who can turn nothing much into a goals.

and welcome Strong hands , I hope your opinions are strong also.

No thanks. Aside from the occasional glimpse of freaky skills, Cupido has never done anything. Even if he had sound knees and a fingerless rectum I don't think he'd put together three good games in a row.

I seem to remember John Barnes saying that going to Essendon straightened him up with the guidance of Hird. At Geelong Barnes admitted he was undisciplined etc. Now if Cupido can't get himself sorted out at the Bombers then I wouldn't be too keen to take him on.

I don't think there would be too many teams wanting to take a punt on a player that has been troubled at 2 clubs already. That being the case I don't think he would be able to negotiate a contract much more than the base salary. If that happens a 12 month contract and getting him via the pre season draft or using pick 70 in the main draft would be the only way you would get him. I would think you did not have much to lose if this was the way it went.

Welcome again!

I think recruiting someone like Cupido is the worst possible thing we can do. Cupido couldn't produce at Brisbane when they were winning premierships, that should tell you something. As was previously stated, we need more players with commitment and intensity (eg Paul Chapman), not a recycled hack who's never been in a pack in his life.

I'd rather draft an untried 17 year old anytime.

No doubt he has talent and potential but I don't think he would fit in to our teams structure ATM - I would certainly entertain the idea of him coming down though but who would miss out on our fwd line to play him?
